Jamie Carragher has bitten back at accusations that Liverpool are ‘bottling it’ in the run-in to the season by comparing the Reds’ overall performance for the campaign to two clubs in particular.

It was just over a month ago that Jurgen Klopp’s side were still in contention for four trophies this term, but subsequent exits from the FA Cup and Europa League, in addition to slipping behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race, threaten to see the German’s reign peter out to an anti-climax.

However, in his latest column for The Telegraph, the 46-year-old insisted that his former club and Arsenal deserve praise for how they’ve competed with Pep Guardiola’s side, pointing to how that duo have performed in comparison to Manchester United and Chelsea, who sit seventh and ninth respectively.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Carragher wrote: “If Arsenal and Liverpool are ‘bottling it’ in April and May, what does that tell us about Manchester United and Chelsea for the rest of the season?

“They are clubs which have made so many poor decisions they are nowhere near the required level, albeit Pochettino is in the process of trying to fix previous mistakes.

“Arteta and Klopp are being judged to the ultimate standard in taking on Guardiola. City are so freakishly good with resources beyond Arsenal and Liverpool, the fairest reference point is with United and Chelsea, especially, who have spent mega millions for a watching brief in the race for the top four at this point in the season.”

Liverpool fans know better than anyone that there’s no shame in coming up narrowly second best to Man City when their financial resources are vastly superior (and when they can rack up 115 Financial Fair Play charges without a care in the world!).

Rival supporters will inevitably indulge in tribal nonsense on social media whereby they try to label the teams who fall slightly short of winning the Premier League as ‘bottlers’, when in the cases of United and Chelsea they may be best advised to get their own houses in order first.

It’s not wholly implausible that those two clubs could miss out on European football altogether for next season, even with the Red Devils accruing a net transfer spend of more than £1bn since 2014 but having not so much as a title challenge to show for it, and the Blues posting just over £650m for the same metric in two chaotic years of Todd Boehly’s ownership thus far.

Annoyingly, Liverpool won only one of their four league games against that pair this term despite being a far superior team, but even if we miss out on domestic glory again, at least we can be thankful that our club is much more competently run than the Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge basket cases of recent years.

David Ornstein has shared one piece of information regarding Michael Edwards which’ll delight Liverpool fans even further.

The 44-year-old’s return to Anfield was formally confirmed by club owners FSG on Tuesday, with the Reds’ former sporting director now back on board as CEO of Football.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

In a report for The Athletic co-authored with James Pearce, the journalist outlined that Edwards will step down from his current role with advisory service Ludonautics on 1 June, while his new remit with LFC will include the hiring of a new sporting director (set to be Richard Hughes) and the establishment of a multi-club ownership model.

In a tweet sharing a link to that article, Ornstein added that Liverpool’s new CEO of Football had rejected interest from both Chelsea and Manchester United prior to his return to Anfield.

As if Edwards – whose six-year reign as sporting director encompassed some of the best transfers in the club’s history – returning to Anfield wasn’t delightful enough for Liverpool fans, his rejection of two of the Reds’ biggest rivals comes as a hugely satisfying cherry on top.

Had he gone to either Stamford Bridge or Old Trafford and left his former club continuing to scramble around for a senior boardroom appointment, it would’ve compounded the misery for Kopites who are still reeling from Jurgen Klopp’s announcement in January that he’ll be leaving at the end of the season.

The 44-year-old stepping down from Ludonautics will also help to ensure that his full focus is on his role within FSG, and the plans to add football clubs to the owners’ portfolio will likely raise plenty of intrigue among the fan base.

With two months remaining of a season which could still end with four trophies being added to the cabinet at Anfield, Edwards’ return adds to the feeling of excitement for the future as well as the present at Liverpool.

Mario Melchiot has specified one thing that he’s hoping not to see in the Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea on Sunday.

The ex-Blues defender is confident that his former club can get the better of Jurgen Klopp’s side, although he admits to being ‘worried’ about the possibility of a penalty shoot-out, just as there was when the Reds bettered the west Londoners at the same stage two years ago.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the 47-year-old predicted Mauricio Pochettino’s team to ‘squeeze a 2-1 victory’  but warned that ‘If it comes to penalties I’m a little worried, so they have to get it won in the game.’

READ MORE: Liverpool could have to pay £17m+ to land preferred alternative to Alonso; Chelsea were after him

READ MORE: Report shares three reasons why Xabi Alonso could be set to deliver crushing blow to Liverpool

You can understand why Melchiot would be fearful of the match tomorrow going to penalties, given the history between the two clubs when that scenario arises.

Aside from both domestic cup finals in 2022, Liverpool also won penalty shootouts against Chelsea in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup and 2007 Champions League semi-finals, with the Reds boasting a 100% record over the west Londoners in that regard (lfchistory.net).

Klopp’s team have also won on each of the last four occasions that they’ve been taken to spot kicks, with Arsenal the last team to defeat them by that method in the 2020/21 Carabao Cup (Transfermarkt).

Another reason why Melchiot must be eager to avoid penalties is the man we’ll have in goals. Caoimhin Kelleher, this competition and a penalty shootout is a combination which has brought us plenty of joy in the past, most notably against Chelsea in the final of this competition two years ago.

History might favour Liverpool if the trophy is to be decided by spot kicks again tomorrow, but given the injury pile-up at Anfield and the quick turnaround to the FA Cup tie against Southampton on Wednesday, hopefully the Reds can get the job done inside 90 minutes at Wembley.

Although the former Tottenham Hotspur boss sympathises with Jurgen Klopp, he believes it was harder for the Stamford Bridge club because they had to tackle problems whilst the 51-year-old was still getting to know his players.

It’s certainly not a comment that many of our fans will agree with and the sheer volume and quality of our currently stricken players should easily speak for themselves.

It was also reported on liverpoolfc.com that: Chelsea will definitely be without captain Reece James, while Benoit Badiashile, Carney Chukwuemeka, Marc Cucurella and Romeo Lavia are also ruled out.’

It seems Thiago SIlva has a chance of playing and that Robert Sanchez is back from injury, so the 51-year-old manager has a lot of players to choose from.

Jurgen Klopp doesn’t quite have this luxury but we will be hoping that our depleted squad still has enough to claim silverware at Wembley.

It’s that time of year again. The possibility of silverware – the first of the 2023/24 season (if you disregard the Community Shield) – hangs sweetly in the air.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will be spending the time in between with their fingers crossed tightly amid a burgeoning injury list that threatens to bubble over into a full-blown crisis.

Liverpool are set to take on Chelsea at Wembley in a repeat of the 2022 final.

The good news? Fans clamouring for Carabao Cup Final Tickets need not fear about their chances of making it inside the stadium.

It seems astonishing, yet hundreds of tickets remain in circulation ahead of the League Cup final on February 25.

Who could be missing from Liverpool’s squad?

Reliable reporter Paul Joyce of The Times noted that Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez are potential doubts ahead of the meeting with Mauricio Pochettino’s men: “Both forwards are serious doubts for Wednesday’s Premier League game at home to Luton Town and will have to be continually assessed in the build-up to Sunday’s Carabao Cup final with Chelsea.”

We’d categorise that as optimistic, though it remains to be seen just how quickly the pair will recover.

On the other side of the spectrum, we look to be potentially without star ‘keeper Alisson Becker, judging by his international manager’s latest injury update. That said, we’d have most likely been without the Brazilian either way with Caoimhin Kelleher the accepted starter for the Carabao Cup.

It goes without saying that both Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones look set for a stint on the sidelines which will seem them ruled out of the upcoming final and potentially all of March.

Dominik Szoboszlai is currently deemed another “maybe”, with the midfielder likely to be assessed in a similar camp to Salah and Nunez.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, sadly, seems likely to miss the final at this current stage, though the availability of Conor Bradley will offer a point of reassurance.

How should Liverpool set up at the weekend?

First and foremost, if there are any serious lingering doubts over the likes of Szoboszlai, Salah and Nunez – they shouldn’t be risked with difficult games on the horizon. In particular, our league meeting with Manchester City on March 10.

That’s not to suggest in any way, shape or form that Liverpool should be throwing in the towel for an important first piece of major silverware. It will just simply be a matter of balancing priorities.

With that in mind, we’d be starting Caoimhin Kelleher in goal, as expected, behind a centre-back partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Jarell Quansah. Andy Robertson and Conor Bradley will be the likely choices selected at the fullback positions.

In midfield, the potential absence of our No.8 means we should potentially expect a combination of Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

Up top, Cody Gakpo has proven a force of nature in this competition and could well be selected to start alongside Luis Diaz and Mo Salah (allowing for the Egyptian’s recovery).

The story of this season has very much been about our strength in depth – let’s hope some of our fringe stars can deliver once more on Sunday.

Is Mauricio Pochettino feeling the heat at Chelsea? It certainly seems like it based on a deflection tactic that he employed in his latest press conference.

The Blues manager – who’s currently facing calls for the sack from some quarters – spoke to the media this afternoon ahead of the FA Cup fourth round replay against Aston Villa on Wednesday night, and he cited Liverpool’s defeat to Arsenal to make a point about how he feels the reaction to his team’s setbacks is overly amplified in comparison.

The Argentine said (via Football365): “When we lost to Liverpool, it was ‘massive fail, oh look at Chelsea, how bad it is’. [When] Liverpool lost to Arsenal, I didn’t hear anything, but it was a similar result to when we played against Liverpool.

“That is affecting the players, because this team needs confidence. We need the support and our fans need to be behind Chelsea. The people need to realise that situation. We cannot send any different messages.”

READ MORE: Club’s sporting director says ‘incredible’ Liverpool target will likely leave them this summer

Pochettino isn’t a manager who regularly moans about his lot or tries to throw shade at other clubs, but citing Liverpool to try and defend the indefensible at Chelsea seems baffling.

The Blues have spent more than £1bn on incoming transfers since Todd Boehly bought the club two years ago (Daily Mail), but all they have to show for it since are a 12th-place finish last term and a mid-table placing more than halfway through the current campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were in scintillating form as they toyed with the west Londoners at Anfield last week, while the visitors were rather meek, so the 51-year-old will have to accept that the criticism of his team’s display was justified.

For Pochettino to claim that he didn’t hear any similar slating of Liverpool’s performance at Arsenal was also peculiar – he must’ve missed the part where Roy Keane likened our defending to that of a ‘pub team’ after the concession of three goals ranging from sloppy to slapstick, or Don Hutchison saying that the performance was ‘bordering on arrogance’.

That was only our second Premier League defeat nearly six months into the season; Chelsea have had the same number of top-flight losses in the past six days.

We can understand why the Argentine is pleading for Blues supporters to stick with them during another turgid campaign for the club, but needlessly bringing LFC into the conversation was a surprising move which hints that he’s very much feeling the pressure right now.

Dominik Szoboszlai was among the goalscorers for Liverpool in their 4-1 win over Chelsea on Wednesday night, and his gesture to the Kop in the celebrations of his header will have gown down a treat with Reds fans.

The home side were 2-0 to the good in the 64th minute when the Hungarian got the end of an inviting cross from Conor Bradley to nod the ball past Djordje Petrovic and effectively end any lingering hopes the Blues may have had of salvaging a result.

A few seconds after netting his fifth goal of the season, the 23-year-old turned towards supporters in the Kop and made a 3-0 sign with his hands, holding up three fingers on his right and making the outline of a zero on his left.

Top-level trolling from Szoboszlai, who’d need two extra hands to signal how many points Liverpool now have over Chelsea in the Premier League table!

Conor Bradley will never forget the night of 31 January 2024 for as long as he lives, with the youngster scoring his first senior goal for Liverpool against Chelsea at Anfield.

The right-back surged upfield in the 39th minute to double his team’s lead, producing an ice-cool finish of which a seasoned Premier League striker would be proud.

After Luis Diaz won the ball back in the middle of the park, he slipped it through to the 20-year-old, who drilled his shot low and hard past Djordje Petrovic to make it 2-0 to the Reds.

Bradley had to wait for a brief VAR check before he could well and truly celebrate a landmark moment in his career, and one which has put Liverpool in the driving seat coming up to half-time (at the time of writing).

‘Crazy…’ – Ibou Konate shares what he instantly thought upon Liverpool reaching Carabao Cup final https://www.empireofthekop.com/2024/01/31/konate-liverpool-chelsea-carabao-cup-final/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 18:42:09 +0000 https://www.empireofthekop.com/?p=248887 As soon as Liverpool booked their passage to the Carabao Cup final last week, Ibrahima Konate was struck with an instant sense of deja vu. As soon as Liverpool booked their passage to the Carabao Cup final last week, Ibrahima Konate was struck with an instant sense of deja vu.

For the second time in three seasons, the Reds will face Chelsea at Wembley in the competition’s showpiece, and it’s the third meeting of the clubs in a domestic cup final in two years, with the duo having also been the last two standing in the FA Cup in 2022.

The sides are in Premier League action tonight too, and ahead of the fixture at Anfield, the French defender spoke to liverpoolfc.com about Mauricio Pochettino’s side, against whom we’ve drawn our last seven matches (excluding penalty shootouts).

When learning of that statistic, Konate said: “That is crazy! When we qualified for the final of the Carabao Cup [last week], I said, ‘Chelsea again?!’ We had so many draws against them, and I hope that this will be the day that we will get the win.”

If familiarity breeds contempt, then part of Konate must thoroughly hate Chelsea! He’s played against the Blues more than any other team since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2021, featuring in each of the last six meetings between the sides (Transfermarkt).

At least the two cup finals a couple of years ago both saw the 24-year-old and his teammates triumph on penalties, so he remains unbeaten against the west Londoners, a statistic he’ll be determined to preserve for two more matches over the next month.

His instant reaction to reaching the Carabao Cup final reflects how we felt during the 2000s when, for five successive seasons, these two clubs met in the Champions League, with no fewer than three semi-final showdowns in just four years during the Rafael Benitez era at Anfield.

Konate is due a win over Chelsea inside 90 minutes. Tonight is the time to set that record straight!

All eyes will be on Anfield as Chelsea arrive in our first Premier League game since the news that Jurgen Klopp will leave at the end of the season.

Speaking before the match, Mauricio Pochettino was asked about the atmosphere that awaits following the news about the German and said: “we are going to win the game.

“Sorry, but we don’t want to be involved or part of the celebration, you know, what’s important to us is to perform well and to win the game.”

It’s clear that the former Spurs boss doesn’t want to be wrapped up in the sentiment of the meeting and is only concerned about collecting three points.

Let’s hope that this isn’t the case though and that a raucous home crowd can ensure that we secure the victory and hold our position at the top of the Premier League.
