Wataru Endo has freed Alexis Mac Allister

Wataru Endo has provided the defensive nous our German tactician will have been hoping for, freeing up his fellow midfielder to be more influential in the final third.

The 25-year-old’s numbers speak for themselves in that regard, with seven goal contributions registered in his last six league games – over half his tally for the season so far.

It will be intriguing to see how another manager interprets the challenge of the midfield and Mac Allister’s influential talents in and around the final third.

It may be worth investing in another holding midfielder – or putting our faith entirely in Stefan Bajcetic as the up-and-coming talent – to ensure the Argentina international is free to devastate higher up the pitch.

Curtis Jones has lauded the ease with which his teammate Alexis Mac Allister is playing at Liverpool.

The Scouser returned to the side for a 17-minute cameo as the Argentine struck with a stunning effort to put the hosts back in control of the tie with Sheffield United.

“I mean, you saw it [the goal] yourself, it doesn’t have to come from me. I was saying it was a little bit of a mishit! But it was struck so clean,” the Reds’ Academy graduate told the club’s official website.

Where does Curtis Jones fit in?

That seems a harsh question (unintentionally so!) given how integral a role the midfielder played in the first-half of our campaign.

With Mac Allister moving higher up the pitch and Wataru Endo free to showcase his talents in the No.6, however, it does raise a selection headache for Jurgen Klopp.

It’s a welcome problem to have, of course, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Jones, Ryan Gravenberch and Harvey Elliott effectively competing for the final spot in the side.

How quickly things changed after the midfield mediocrity of the prior campaign!

Alexis Mac Allister was keen to change the subject when asked to reflect on Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion player turned the focus to fellow goalscorer Cody Gakpo to praise his work ethic.

“Let me say something: I’m really happy for this guy, he’s been working very hard and today he got his goal,” the Argentine told TNT Sports after the tie (via @Ghonday18).

“I’m very glad because he’s one of these guys that work very hard and he’s always positive and a good leader for the group.

“Very happy for him and for the team.”

The Dutch international has registered 19 goal contributions in 44 games this term – at a rate of one goal or assist every 124.63 minutes.

The criticism of the former PSV star seems a little… shall we say harsh?

We’re not suggesting for a moment that Gakpo’s on Mo Salah’s level – or even that of Darwin Nunez’s – for performance, but to suggest he’s been short on quality or importance feels reactive.

His latest effort against Chris Wilder’s men certainly demonstrates how important he’s been off the bench for Liverpool at times this season.

In truth, it was exactly the kind of contribution we needed in a game of potentially huge significance in the title race.

Jurgen Klopp’s command of Spanish only took him so far in his conversation with Alexis Mac Allister’s father.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss shared his interaction with Carlos Mac Allister after the Merseysiders defeated relegation-battlers Sheffield United at Anfield.

“I met his dad after the game. He said, ‘Thank you’. I said, ‘Gracias’,” the German recalled in his post-match press conference. “That was the full conversation. ‘Hola’ I said as well and then my Spanish ends.”

Alexis Mac Allister stole the show with a thunderous strike from outside the box’s perimeter in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United yesterday.

The Argentine’s sixth strike of the season (across all competitions) pulled the hosts back into the lead following Conor Bradley’s own goal and inspired pandemonium in the stands amongst the home support.

Is Alexis Mac Allister Liverpool’s signing of the season?

Why yes… our £35m summer addition might very well be. That’s some going too given how pivotal Wataru Endo has been this year for Liverpool.

Dominik Szoboszlai, too, has shown absolutely bundles of world-class quality, not to mention the legs that we were so desperately craving last term. There have been moments from Ryan Gravenberch as well, albeit he’s a talent in need of refinement.

But Alexis Mac Allister? Wow. If he were a vintage you wouldn’t touch the bottle. There’d be no occasion seismic enough to precipitate its uncorking.

What a footballer.

Neil Jones has credited Alexis Mac Allister with helping raise the ceiling of what Liverpool can achieve this season.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion technician was instrumental in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over his former club at the weekend.

“I think Alexis Mac Allister is becoming one of the best midfielders around,” the Covering Liverpool journalist wrote in his exclusive EOTK Insider column with Empire of the Kop.

“I was talking about this yesterday… you get these players who can take a while to enter peoples’ radars as great players, but then you take a deeper look at their career and there’s this clear correlation between them being in a team and the team being really good.

“Call them a ceiling raiser or a floor lifter – either or! You look at people down the years like Arturo Vidal who are always around successful teams but then you don’t always necessarily associate them with being world-class players, but they are always around world-class teams. Mac Allister is that, isn’t he?

“You look at Brighton emerging as one of the brightest teams in Europe and that was when he was in their midfield, all of a sudden Argentina win the World Cup and he’s in their midfield, and now he’s at Liverpool and they’re top of the league with nine games to go and playing really good football.”

The Merseysiders now find themselves top of the Premier League table by two points over second-placed Arsenal. It follows the Gunners’ stalemate with Manchester City.

Liverpool’s window tops the lot

It’s hard to immediately think of another English top-flight outfit matching or surpassing our achievement in the summer window.

Given the quality seen out of the door – including skipper Jordan Henderson and ‘lighthouse’ Fabinho – what we’re achieving directly after a disappointing 2022/23 campaign is astounding.

Much of the credit has to go to Julian Ward, of course, for observing the opportunity to land the Argentine international for what now appears a snip at £35m.
