Micah Richards has shared his thoughts on Ruben Amorim amid the 39-year-old’s links with the Liverpool manager’s job.

Discussions are reportedly underway about the potential appointment of the Sporting Lisbon boss as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, and he’s been given the seal of approval by the former Manchester City defender.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the pundit said of Amorim: “I think the way he plays tactically he’d be good. In terms of could he be good for Liverpool? Definitely. He’s really intelligent. He plays attacking football. He has evolved as a manager as well because he was at Braga I think. He did okay there.

“The thing is though, can he do it in the Premier League so soon? That’s the one question mark you would have. I’ve heard Liverpool fans saying they would like him. They like his style of football, so you just never know.”

Although Richards cited Amorim’s lack of Premier League experience as a possible ‘question mark’, the Sporting manager has proven his worth on the European stage as well as in Portugal.

His side reached the Champions League knockout rounds two years ago and the Europa League quarter-finals last season, eliminating Arsenal from the latter, while he’s also overseen victory over Tottenham and a draw against Manchester City in that time.

In 207 matches in charge of the Lisbon club, they’ve scored 446 goals (2.15 per game), a testament to their prolific nature and penchant for attacking football, and their phenomental tally of 84 goals in the Portuguese top flight this term is 19 more than the next-best team in that regard.

Going from Sporting to Liverpool would be a step up for the 39-year-old, but the evidence of his managerial career so far suggests that he could be ready for such a move.

Two decades on from his compatriot Jose Mourinho announcing himself in the Premier Leauge in style, Amorim appears to have the qualities to do the same.

Jamie Carragher brought up the elephant in the room during last night’s Champions League coverage, and Micah Richards didn’t like it!

The two pundits were tasked with predicting the remainder of the ties in this season’s tournament, and both selected Manchester City to go the distance and retain their European title at Wembley on 1 June.

When the ex-Liverpool defender came around to naming the team he thinks will win it out, he declared: “And the winner is, the team with 115 charges, Manchester City!”

Off-camera, Richards could be heard saying ‘wow’ in a deadpan tone which suggested that he wasn’t too impressed with Carragher’s refence to the Etihad Stadium club being charged with 115 alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play and Profit & Sustainability Rules.

Many pundits skirt around that ongoing issue when praising Pep Guardiola’s side to the hilt, and although they may be an excellent team with world-class players, there’s no getting away from the specture of those numerous charges.

Fair play to Carragher for calling it out live on air, even if it were in jocular fashion as a means of winding up his fellow pundit.

Micah Richards has dismissed Liverpool as genuine Premier League title contenders this season, believing it to be a two-horse race between Manchester City and Arsenal.

That duo meet at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon, with the table-topping Gunners a point ahead of the home side, although the Reds have the chance to knock them off the summit if they avoid defeat against Brighton earlier in the day.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

With the top three currently separated by just one point with 10 matches remaining, they can all realistically aspire to end the campaign as champions, although the Sky Sports pundit can’t see Jurgen Klopp signing off from Anfield with the top-flight trophy.

When asked on the Rest is Football Podcast if he feels Liverpool could win the title, Richards promptly replied: “No, they’re not going to win the league. I think it’s Man City or Arsenal. I think Man City will win the league, [but] it depends what happens on Sunday. If Arsenal go to the Etihad and win…”

At this juncture of the season, it’d be very foolish to write off Liverpool’s hopes of triumphing in the Premier League title race.

Only goal difference is keeping the Reds off the summit as of now, while they’ve suffered fewer defeats than either Arsenal or City and also shown a resilience which suggests that they have the stomach to give Klopp a glorious send-off in May.

From the numerous occasions that we’ve recovered from losing positions to emerge victorious, to coming up with dramatic late winners such as Darwin Nunez at Nottingham Forest earlier this month, there’s a defiance and determination about LFC which gives them every chance of dethroning Pep Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool still have several tricky hurdles to negotiate during the title run-in, starting with today’s clash against a Brighton side who haven’t lost at Anfield since 2019 and also taking in trips to Old Trafford, Goodison Park and Villa Park.

Right now, though, the Reds have to be taken seriously as contenders to win the Premier League. Given that we’ve so often been in the mix under Klopp, it seems peculiar that Richards is so emphatically writing us off, but we all know that the best response to that would be…!

Micah Richards has been purring over one former Liverpool dynamo who he’s ranked above John Barnes on a list of the top 10 all-time Premier League wingers.

The ex-Manchester City defender joined Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast to make their selections, with the 35-year-old placing the Senegal star seventh, ahead of Riyad Mahrez, Robert Pires and the legendary ‘Digger’.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Richards explained: “Sadio Mane, he should be higher. The peer pressure has got to me from social media. He was at number seven for me. He had everything, didn’t he?

“Who do we think is better all-round? We know [Mo] Salah is the better goalscorer, but who’s the better all-round player?”

Even if Barnes was approaching the twilight years of his career by the time the Premier League began, it’s still quite a feather in Mane’s cap for Richards to rank him above ‘Digger’ in the division’s top 10 wingers.

That said, the Senegalese wizard was a crucial factor in Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp, scoring 120 times in 269 appearances for the Reds and winning the biggest prizes on offer at Anfield (Transfermarkt).

Along with Salah and Bobby Firmino, he formed a core part of an attacking triumvirate which was the envy of even the biggest clubs in European football, hence why Bayern Munich signed him in 2022.

The £34m that LFC spent to acquire Mane in 2016 proved to be an almighty bargain considering his output and how effortlessly he slotted into the team.

In time when we reflect on our best years under Klopp, the Senegal attacker will be recognised as one of the central figures to our Premier League and Champions League triumphs. A genius of a player!

Micah Richards was highly impressed by two Liverpool players in particular during the 1-1 draw against his former club Manchester City on Sunday.

Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half penalty ensured that the spoils were shared at Anfield, although the Sky Sports pundit was awestruck by two others who he witnessed firsthand at the match, which he was covering as an analyst for the broadcaster.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, the 35-year-old said: “Harvey Elliott, what a player he is! He works so hard for the team.

“When you are watching the game on TV, you don’t see like people’s positions and all that, and the cameras panning from one position to another, but when you are at the game, you see exactly how hard he works. He was composed in possession and he really worked hard for the team.

“[Wataru] Endo in midfield, wow! When he came to Liverpool, I was thinking, ‘Okay, good experienced player’, but I didn’t think he could get to the levels of that in terms of the intensity of the game.

“We know that the Bundesliga is back and forth, but I thought he was outstanding in the middle of the park yesterday. He really was.”

The ever-dependable Endo did a marvellous job for Liverpool again yesterday, winning six duels and four tackles along with posting a 95% passing success rate (Sofascore). He did brilliantly to win one particular 50-50 against Kevin De Bruyne, who was substituted soon after.

Meanwhile, Elliott – who started as a right winger before Mo Salah was introduced off the bench – played one key pass, delivered two accurate crosses and won one tackle (Sofascore).

The 20-year-old has been a consistently reliable performer for the Reds this season and looks a far more mature and refined player compared to this time last year, and his development must surely have left Jurgen Klopp delighted.

It’s very rarely that Man City are outplayed in midfield, but Endo and latterly Elliott were valuable contributors towards Liverpool achieving that distinction on Sunday, and both could have a huge part to play in the run-in to a season which could still end gloriously for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool could be set to miss out to Bayern Munich on Xabi Alonso, but Micah Richards has suggested one ‘top manager’ from the Premier League who could be a viable candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp.

The Bavarian giants have reportedly opened talks with the Bayer Leverkusen boss to take over from Thomas Tuchel, and if they get their man, it’ll leave the Reds needing to pursue alternatives.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the ex-Manchester City defender stated his belief that Roberto De Zerbi has the requisite qualities for the Anfield job.

Richards said of the Brighton boss: “I think he’s got the ability [to replace Klopp]. He’s a top manager.”

The pundit added of the Italian: “He’s got something special. He’s a bit like Pep, not in terms of quality but the way they see the game, always trying to [be] forward thinking in terms of ‘what can I do differently, tactically’.

“Sometimes it can be seen as too much but when it works, it really does work for him, and I think he’s got all the attributes to be a top, top manager.”

De Zerbi has done tremendously at Brighton, taking charge in the midst of last season after Graham Potter’s abrupt exit for Chelsea and guiding the Seagulls to a sixth-place finish, as well as topping their Europa League group ahead of Marseille and Ajax in the south coast club’s first-ever continental campaign.

His eye for shrewd transfer dealings has been borne out in last summer’s swoop for the prolific Joao Pedro and decision to cash in on Moises Caicedo when the Ecuadorian’s market value was through the roof, and he’s also honed the talents of gifted youngsters such as Evan Ferguson at the Amex Stadium.

However, the 44-year-old’s side have been hit-and-miss in the league this term, dismantling the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham but also shipping heavy defeats to Aston Villa, Fulham and 18th-placed Luton.

Prising De Zerbi from Brighton would feel more akin to Liverpool’s swoop for Brendan Rodgers rather than a blockbuster appointment like Klopp.

The current Celtic boss got the Anfield gig in 2012 off the back of leading Swansea to mid-table in their first Premier League season – an impressive achievement, for sure, but not quite comparable to the German winning successive Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund.

The Italian may not be top of the queue for FSG right now, and he doesn’t stand out as the best candidate out there, but let’s see if LFC lean more towards him should Bayern snap up Alonso.

Micah Richards believes that one factor could be a significant help to Liverpool during the run-in to the Premier League title race.

The Reds face a pivotal showdown at home to Manchester City next Sunday, and they’ll be seeking to preserve an imperious record which has seen Jurgen Klopp’s side drop only four points at Anfield all season.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Pep Guardiola’s team beat local rivals United yesterday, the pundit acknowledged that LFC’s stadium carries an ‘aura’ which intimidates even a team which won the treble last year.

Richards said: “Anfield’s a tough place to go. I don’t know what it is about the place. You go in there and the atmosphere, the fans – for some reason they’ve just got an aura around there, and even going back to my time, we never won at Anfield.

“You see Pep’s record, one of the best in the business, with just one win in eight, so it’s going to be tough.”

A freakish six-game losing run in the early weeks of 2021 aside, Klopp has turned Anfield into the definition of a fortress, with Liverpool beaten in just one Premier League match at the venue in front of fans since April 2017.

Their near-perfection at home has helped to fuel another title challenge this season, and if we can repeat the 1-0 win over City from their last visit in October 2022, it’d represent a massive statement which could prove decisive in the hunt for domestic supremacy.

The Reds will have to be close to flawless in their away fixtures also, but there’s no question that their record at Anfield makes it a very tall order for even the best teams in world football to get a result there.

Micah Richards was left suitably impressed by Jayden Danns’ drive and determination against Southampton.

The former Manchester City star described the youngster’s opening goal in the FA Cup fifth round as ‘brilliant’ as the Reds secured a 3-0 victory.

“When you’re a young player, there’s always a moment in your career when you feel like you can relax and it comes at different stages for different players,” the former defender spoke on the Rest Is Football podcast.

“They could have easily taken their foot off the gas and thought, ‘I’ve won the League Cup now, I can go get some minutes, go on loan and everyone knows my name’. But to perform like that at Anfield and score in front of the Kop with a delicious dink as well.

“The keeper has come out if you take that little second and lift it [the ball], the way he explained that in his interview, it was brilliant. I know his Dad [Neil Danns], and to see his son doing so well, is just amazing.”

The Merseysiders are set to next take on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this weekend.

Keep an eye on Jayden Danns

It’s yet another player to add to the growing list of ‘ones to watch’ over the coming years.

What a spine Liverpool are developing already, from the likes of Marcelo Pitaluga, to Jarell Quansah, to Bobby Clark and Trey Nyoni, to Danns up top.

It’s worth bearing in mind that we can’t risk heaping too much pressure on any of these young lads’ shoulders.

That’s unlikely to happen, of course, even after Jurgen Klopp calls time on his Anfield career this summer.

Here at Liverpool, Danns’ development couldn’t be better assured.

Jamie Carragher was left in awe of Virgil van Dijk following the Liverpool captain’s equaliser in the 4-1 win over Luton on Wednesday night.

The injury-plagued Reds were in a perilous position at half-time and in need of inspiration as the teams resumed after the interval, and the skipper duly led by example, drawing his team level in the 56th minute.

The Scouser was on punditry duty for CBS Sports alongside Micah Richards, who uploaded a clip of his colleague’s reaction to the Dutchman’s goal to his Instagram stories.

It left Carragher gushing: “You don’t need to analyse that. Look at the colossus, look at him, look at him! A marvel of modern science. He is the best centre-back the Premier League has ever seen, by a mile.”

Great captains galvanise their teammates in their hour of need, and Van Dijk did exactly that with his timely equaliser last night, sending Liverpool on their way to a comfortable victory which didn’t seem to be on the cards at half-time.

It was the 32-year-old’s third goal of the season and his 22nd overall in just over six years with the Reds (Transfermarkt), a decent tally for a centre-back and one which’d likely be even higher had he not missed almost the entire 2020/21 season through injury.

In addition to popping up with his fair share of goals, the Dutchman is also a colossal figure at the back, adding a solidity and assuredness to our defence and directing operations around him.

Liverpool might be shorn of numerous key players through injury right now, but so long as they have the inspirational Van Dijk leading by example, there’s every chance we could enjoy tangible success by the end of Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign in charge.

The two pundits were on duty for CBS Sports when, during the build-up to the match they were covering, news filtered through of Chiedozie Ogbene firing the Hatters in front at Anfield.

The former Manchester City defender wasted no time in rubbing it in Carra’s face, with the Scouser outwardly unflinching as he absorbed Richards’ gloating, even though he must’ve been fuming inside.

Thankfully, Carragher would end the night by far the happier of the pair as Liverpool came from behind to record a second successive 4-1 victory, which leaves them four points clear at the Premier League summit tonight.

Micah Richards has admitted his admiration for one Liverpool player in particular who’s closing in on 100 appearances for the club.

Harvey Elliott was signed as a 16-year-old from Fulham in the summer of 2019 when he was recognised as one of the hottest prospects in Europe.

The boyhood Liverpool supporter has since helped the Reds win the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup and was a regular starter under Jurgen Klopp during the 2021/22 campaign before sustaining a serious knee injury during a game against Leeds United at Elland Road.

He’s struggled to nail down a regular starting spot since returning to fitness but remains a vital squad player and someone who former Manchester City defender Richards ‘really loves’.

Richards said on the Rest is Football podcast (via The Boot Room): “He’s a quality player. When he was at Fulham, there were whispers around ‘who’s this whiz kid, he’s left-footed, can play number 10, can play on the wings, can score goals’.

“Then, when he came to Liverpool, he’s got everything but because he’s sort of in a team which have been challenging for the Premier League and the Champions League, it’s always going to be difficult.

“But now, he’s approaching 100 games? 100 games for Liverpool, that is massive. I really love him as a talent. I just hope he’s got all the tools to go to the next stage because sometimes it’s very difficult when a team’s constantly competing at the highest level.

“But I rate him so highly. He’s got everything.”

Elliott, who earns £40,000 per week at Anfield (Spotrac), is a player who’s very easy on the eye with his ability to glide past defenders and play the game at his own pace.

He’s got a great eye for a pass and has the versatility to be deployed in a midfield three or on either flank in attack.

It feels like the England youth international has been around forever but at 20 years of age there’s still a lot more to come from our No.19.

He has one goal and two assists this term (across all competitions) and will be looking for more game time when Burnley visit Anfield tomorrow – a game which will be Elliott’s 98th senior appearance for the Reds.

Micah Richards has admitted he’s been very impressed by one Liverpool Academy product recently – labelling the 20-year-old as ‘a real talent’.

Conor Bradley was handed another start by Jurgen Klopp on Wednesday night as the Reds booked their spot in next month’s League Cup final with a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The Northern Irishman threw in another superb performance at right back and has proved in recent weeks that he’s got what it takes to challenge Trent Alexander-Arnold for a role in the side.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast (via The Boot Room), Richards said: “I thought Bradley was very good until they conceded the goal when he (Wilson) just come inside him.

“He looks like a real talent – he’s a full-back for Liverpool if anyone has not seen him already.”

After spending time at Bolton last season where Bradley won their player of the season award, the youngster sustained a back injury during preseason training and only returned to action at the start of last month.

The Northern Ireland international has been given an extended run in the side in recent weeks as a result of Alexander-Arnold’s knee injury and it’s fair to say he’s grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

He’s solid defensively but also isn’t afraid of showing what he’s about in attacking areas – registering an assist during our 4-0 defeat of Bournemouth at the weekend.

We’re delighted to see yet another Academy product stepping up to the plate when needed and look forward to seeing him continue to impress in a red shirt.

It has taken some time since the knee injury that was sustained by the Colombian, for him to come near his form of old but that is all totally understandable.

The 27-year-old has been showing vast improvements in recent weeks though and we all hope it won’t be long until we see the Luis Diaz of old.

It’s no surprise that the performance of our No.20 against Bournemouth has created headlines, although we already knew that Diogo Jota was one of our key players.

It seems like somewhat lazy punditry to now start crediting the Portuguese forward after his goal scoring exploits, let’s hope though that he continues to be discussed for his performances for the Reds.
