Conor Coady has noticed a discernible change in Jurgen Klopp’s demeanour following Liverpool’s defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Speaking to Sky Sports shortly after the final whistle, the Reds manager said that the result felt ‘really, really rubbish’ and the game was ‘horrible to watch’, excusing only Curtis Jones as he accused his players of not ‘chasing’ enough.

During a guest appearance on BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Coady said that was struck by how ‘downbeat’ the German came across during his post-match interview.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

The ex-Liverpool defender stated: “Klopp’s interview after the game, we all felt the same. We all felt it was a little bit downbeat.

“Sometimes when Liverpool lose he’s still got a smile on this face, he seems to smile on the line when a goal goes in and different things. You always think there’s something coming from Jurgen Klopp. It was very downbeat.

“You just wonder a little bit when he came out and did the interview when he was leaving about how tired he was, he’d had enough, it was a strain on him. Is that now becoming a strain on the players?

“The amount of balls they lost first half and the mistakes they were making, the three midfielders. It’s not known for Liverpool midfielders to be doing that. You just wonder if everything that’s happened with the manager this season is just taking its toll come the end of the season.”

When Klopp announced in January that he’d be stepping down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season, he attributed his decision to ‘running out of energy’.

Having been in charge of one of the biggest clubs in world football for the best part of a decade, with the strain of trying to compete with a ludicrously wealthy Manchester City in that time, it’s no wonder those exertions seem to have taken a toll on the 56-year-old.

Hopes of sending him out on the high of winning four trophies have since ended, and the Reds’ recent slump has left them all but out of the Europa League and requiring favours from elsewhere to clinch the Premier League title, in addition to taking care of their own business.

There’s a danger of Klopp’s wonderful Liverpool reign ending in anti-climax if the team’s post-Easter form is maintained to the end of the season, and it’d be a crying shame to see one of our greatest managers bow out on a muted note.

Hopefully the squad can lift themselves and produce a barnstorming finish to the campaign. The German deserves a glorious send-off, not an exit on a whimper.

Liverpool fans were delighted to see Cody Gakpo score his first goal for the Reds but during the punditry after the match, Jamie Carragher was quick to comment on the positioning of Conor Coady.

The Bootle-born pundit said: “That is ‘Carragher land’ I can assure you about that” as he joked about the Everton defender blaming his defensive teammates after the goal.

The comment actually came from Gary Neville off-screen to say that the boyhood Red turned Blue for the most recent derbies was in a position where he could only hit the ball into his own net or let it run past him.

This joking about poor defensive positioning was clearly making the pundits giggle but was also used to show how our former academy graduate was at fault for our second goal.

Having spent his youth career at Liverpool and supporting the club as a boy, Conor Coady walked a path that not many have walked before when he joined Everton on loan at the start of the season and Jordan Henderson asked him the question on everyone’s lips.

Speaking with the England social media accounts, our captain said: “We’re all England here but what I really want to know is, are you blue or red?”

Despite the St.Helens-born defender predictably stating his allegiances were with the Goodison club, the comments by him saying: “[Henderson] knows deep down”, did suggest he may feel that he has to say he’s a Blue now.

It’s an interesting watch and, despite it all being light-hearted, it’s clear that the former Wolves captain wasn’t happy with the question.

Steven Gerrard is loved by all Liverpool supporters and two former Reds joined Kyle Walker in sharing their opinions on whether he is the greatest midfielder England has ever seen.

Raheem Sterling and Conor Coady were both at the club during our former captain’s time at Anfield and it was interesting to see that the current Chelsea man clearly has a lot of respect for his former teammate.

The turn to Frank Lampard from the current Everton defender was comical, with Coady again being reluctant to pick a side on whether he preferred his current boss or childhood hero.

The debate is interesting though and it’s clear that it was a hard choice between the two above mentioned players and Paul Scholes – an age old debate – but we all know the winner is clearly Stevie G.

Conor Coady has explained that ‘scoring’ in the Merseyside Derby was ‘one of the best feelings’ he’s ever had in football.

The Liverpool Academy graduate, who made two senior appearances for the Reds, thought he’d won the game for Everton before his close range strike was ruled out for offside by VAR.

The former Wolves defender, who returned to Merseyside earlier this season, insists that he had no doubts about joining the Goodison Park outfit despite being a boyhood Liverpool supporter.

“A lot of people ask me about scoring against Liverpool [including this reporter] and to be honest, I think it is a daft question,” Coady told Sportsmail.

“I have played football for a long time now and the one thing I give to any club I am playing for is everything every single day of my life. I’ll push that club and try to make the people around me better.”

The England international was captain of the West Midland’s outfit but Wolves boss Bruno Lage reverted to a back four this season and felt that Coady wasn’t suited for his starting XI this term.

He has settled well under Frank Lampard, however, and was disappointed to see his Merseyside Derby goal chalked off.

“I know how big Merseyside derbies are, I grew up with them, I know what they are about, I know how big they are for Everton Football Club and we spoke about it before that game,” he added. “It is a massive game for Evertonians, a massive game for the manager and the players.

“So, to have that feeling at the time [when the ball hit the back of the net], bearing in mind it got taken away, it was one of the best feelings I ever had in football, I’ll be honest. I am giving my all for that club every single day.”

It’s never nice to see a former player join a bitter rival but it’s not as if Coady is a Liverpool legend.

He did come through the ranks and looked destined to have a decent career at the club, but it didn’t quite work out.

He’s done well since leaving Anfield and it’s fair to say this his move to Everton earlier this season was a surprise after he had become a huge fan favourite at Wolves.

In regards to our draw with the Blues earlier this month, we weren’t at our best on the day but both sides had chances to win the game.

A draw was probably a fair result and we’ll be hoping to earn all three points against them in the reverse fixture at Anfield later this season.

We need to ensure that we pick up a huge three points against Brighton at Anfield on Saturday when we return to action following the postponed Chelsea game and the recent international break before we host Rangers on Tuesday in the Champions League.

Dermot Gallagher was on hand to dispute claims that Everton’s opener against Liverpool, via Conor Coady, should have stood.

The former Premier League referee noted that James Milner’s contact on the ball going into the box shouldn’t be taken into account unless he was ‘in possession of the ball, has to have control of the ball or has to deliberately try to play that ball safely’ – none of which the veteran midfielder did.

It does highlight some room for contradiction as far as the rules are concerned over the exact definition of trying to play the ball, though it’s pleasing to see the laws of the game work out in our favour to help Jurgen Klopp’s men avoid another defeat in the league.

Richard Keys has claimed that yesterday was a ‘really bday day for VAR’ and suggested that Conor Coady’s disallowed goal in the Merseyside derby should’ve stood.

The former Liverpool man tapped home Neil Maupay’s cross-shot from close range during the second half at Goodison Park and after initially celebrating jubilantly with the home supporters, VAR intervened and correctly ruled the strike out for offside.

There were a number of questionable decisions in other Premier League games yesterday, however, with West Ham robbed of a late equaliser at Stamford Bridge, Newcastle harshly having a goal chalked off and Philippe Coutinho’s great effort against City disallowed due to a bizarre offside call from the linesman.

“Another really bad day for VAR,” Keys tweeted on his official Twitter account. “West Ham were robbed. It was a shocking decision that cost them an equaliser. Newcastle should have a pen or their goal should stand & I’ll remain convinced Everton could’ve had a winner. The reasoning will be interesting.

The former Sky Sports presenter is right to question the other decisions, but it’s quite bemusing as to how he can claim Everton’s goal should’ve counted.

Coady was clearly in an offside position – Keys’ hatred towards Liverpool appears to grow strong every week.

VAR has been the topic of most discussions recently but what needs to be remembered is that it’s not the technology that is to blame, it’s the referee operating it.

The referee in charge of VAR can’t hide behind the technology, it is still their decision at the end of the day and teams are unfairly losing out on points as a result far too often.

VAR is here to stay but a review is certainly needed – the same system appears to work a lot more smoothly in the Champions League and other major leagues around Europe so what is the Premier League doing wrong?

The latter had wheeled away in sheer jubilation (apparently forgetting his prior ties to the Reds) after latching onto the end of a Neal Maupay effort to put his side 1-0 up.

VAR came to the visitor’s rescue, however, overruling the opener and inviting our No.27 to engage in some light mickey-taking of the ex-Wolves star.

Jamie Carragher knows better than most the repercussions of turning your back on your boyhood club, in order to go and play for their local rivals.

Now that Conor Coady has completed his initial loan move to Everton, the Scouser has gone one step beyond our vice captain and will now be in the position to have played for both clubs.

The Sky Sports pundit was a staunch Evertonian as a child and his conversion to being a Kopite came before his debut at Anfield but it still provided the former No.23 the perfect opportunity to poke some fun at his former teammate.

READ MORE: Liverpool ‘could be the right fit for’ 24-year-old ‘surprise’ possible signing who the Reds have followed ‘for years’

Taking to his Instagram account, the 44-year-old wrote ‘Turncoat’ which is of course ironic as he is one man who can certainly also be labelled with that term.

There have been no direct transfers between the Merseyside clubs since 2002 when Abel Xavier joined the Reds, now the former Wolves captain is looking to be the first man since Sander Westerveld in 2006 to have played a first-team game for both clubs.

With Rafa Benitez managing at Goodison Park last season and Andy Lonergan currently in their squad too, it looks like there is becoming a slight loosening of the long-standing no turncoat rules in the city.

It will be a strange feeling for the 29-year-old to return back to Anfield as an Everton player this season and the reception he receives will certainly be interesting to watch.

Everton have reportedly reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign England international Conor Coady.

The Liverpool Academy graduate is the current club captain at Molineux but it’s believed that Frank Lampard is an admirer of the 29-year-old and he will make a return to Merseyside on loan with a view for a permanent deal, that’s according to the Mirror’s David Maddock.

Blues defenders Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina sustained injuries in Everton’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea yesterday and the Toffees are therefore needing cover at centre half.

It’s rather surprising to hear that Coady is willing to move to Goodison Park when he’s played European football with Wolves in recent years and he’s such a huge favourite amongst the fans after being named captain in 201, but it’s believed that Bruno Lage is willing to let him leave.

With the World Cup coming up at the end of the year, the ex-Red will of course be wanting to perform at the top of his game and needs regular minutes to ensure he’s a part of Gareth Southgate’s travelling party to Qatar.

Wolves have reverted to a back four this season meaning Coady could see his game time limited and the West Midlands outfit have also signed 21-year-old Nathan Collins from relegated Burnley.

St. Helens born Coady was left out of the starting XI yesterday as Wolves succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Leeds at Elland Road.

He featured for the Reds in a Europa League group stage clash with Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala and made his Premier League debut against Fulham in the summer of 2013 before being sold to Huddersfield Town the following year.

“Conor Coady doesn’t stop talking about him!”

Coady was born in St. Helens on Merseyside and joined the Reds Academy set-up at the age of 12 – he remained at the club until 2014 before joining Huddersfield Town and then Wolves the following year.

There are only five players in the top four divisions of English football that have yet to be dispossessed this season, one plays for Liverpool and one used to.

Joining Scunthorpe United’s Jai Rowe, Gillingham’s Max Ehmer and Plymouth Argyle’s Dan Scarr, is Conor Coady and Virgil van Dijk.

The captain of Holland is alongside our former youth prospect as the only two Premier League players to have played 20 or more outfield games this season and not be dispossessed.

This statistic, that has been presented by @playmaker_EN, illustrates the ability our No.4 has on the ball as he is also the man with the sixth highest number of passes in the league this season.

For the 30-year-old to be on the ball so often and be a key part of starting many attacks yet to also not give the ball away, it just further exemplifies why he is regarded as one of the greatest players in the world.

It’s quite nice to see a Scouser in the list too and shows that there’s obviously some good lessons being taught in our academy.

Former Liverpool star Conor Coady has waxed lyrical over reported Reds target and Wolves man, Adama Traore, following the Spaniard’s late goal in a 3-1 victory over Southampton.

The effort was the 25-year-old’s first of the season, ensuring Bruno Lage’s men rose to eighth in the Premier League table, a point behind Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United outfit.

I was more happy for him than I was for me. He is one of the hardest working people I have ever met. He worked so hard for it and I hope he can build on it,” the centre-half told BBC Radio 5 Live (via BBC Sport).

“He plays like he does every single week, I don’t think there is any footballer like him in the world.

“His power, aggression, the way he runs, and how quick he is, it is a pleasure to have him here. We hope he stays with us as long as possible because when he is like today he is unplayable.”

The La Masia graduate continues to be tentatively linked with an Anfield switch, a rumour that appears to cling to life off the back of Jurgen Klopp’s prior admission of admiration for the attacker.

With the No.37 set to turn 26 later this January, however, serious questions have to be raised about his chances of signing for us given the recruitment team’s tendency to favour options closer to the 20-24 age range.

Not to overlook the qualities at Traore’s disposal, however, it hardly seems the kind of acquisition Julian Ward and co. will have high up on their lists when it comes to safeguarding the future of the forward line.

Given how much in the way of goal contributions our current wingers bring to the table, there would likewise need to be a high level of confidence in the prospect of our coaching staff coaxing far more impressive numbers from the wide man.

Conor Coady invited a bemused response from midfielder Fabinho, after the Wolves captain dramatically flopped to the ground late in the first-half.

The Brazilian shot an incredulous look at the defender before turning to fellow Liverpool star Jordan Henderson for answers.

Fortunately, VAR had our backs with this incident, which could have easily changed the flow of the game had Craig Pawson’s initial penalty award not been overturned.

VAR had little involvement beyond the penalty-claim, with the Reds storming ahead in the second-half to seize all three points, in front of the Anfield crowd, in a magnificent 4-0 rout of the Wanderers.

It was a fully deserved result for Jurgen Klopp’s men, which takes the club back level with Tottenham at the peak of the Premier League table.
