Paul Merson has questioned why Harvey Elliott wasn’t handed more game time during Liverpool’s shock 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Reds had the opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League table had they beaten the Selhurst Park-based outfit at the weekend but instead ended the weekend third in the table with Manchester City currently occupying top spot ahead of Arsenal.

Despite Jurgen Klopp promising a reaction from his side’s 3-0 Europa League defeat to Atalanta on Thursday night, the Merseysiders threw in a lacklustre first half performance and then wasted a handful of huge opportunities to find the back of the net after the break.

The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott were all introduced from the bench to help try and rescue the Reds but Merson believes the latter should’ve been given more of a chance to influence the game.

“Klopp’s a great manager,” the former Arsenal man told Sky Sports (via Rousing The Kop). “Why are you bringing Harvey Elliott on with ten minutes to go?  Eight minutes to go? Give him 25-30. That’s one thing he is, a very good substitute. He affects football matches. But managers feel the pressure as well.”

Our No. 19 has struggled to break into the starting XI so far this term but has impressed whenever called upon from the bench.

The England youth international has three goals and seven assists to his name this season (across all competitions) and has spoken recently about his desire to start more games for his boyhood club.

The 21-year-old can be deployed in an advanced midfield role or as part of the front three and has the ability to calve open defences with his superb passing ability and impressive vision.

He does bring a lot of energy to the side when brought off the bench but he’ll be eager to make his mark from the start when handed the chance to do so between now and the end of the season.

Harvey Elliott was denied by not one but two pieces of goal frame as he came agonisingly close to putting Liverpool in front against Atalanta tonight.

In the 26th minute of the Europa League clash at Anfield, the visitors could only clear a Kostas Tsimikas free-kick straight to the 21-year-old, who shifted the ball onto his left foot before letting fly.

His curling shot struck the crossbar and then came back down off the post and back into play before the away side eventually cleared their lines.

It was mightily unfortunate for Elliott, who must’ve thought he’d be about to celebrate his fourth goal of the season when he got his shot off, only for the woodwork to thwart him on the double.

Liverpool fans will be dreading the day that we say goodbye to Jurgen Klopp but it’s clear that he believes that we’re in safe hands with one player.

The 21-year-old is not only playing for the club he loves but is also doing so with great ability, with each performance proving why the manager has such respect for his midfielder.

Now the job for the boyhood Red is to get himself a starting role at Anfield, perhaps under the new manager at the club.

There’s a maximum of two European nights under the lights with Jurgen Klopp as our manager and Harvey Elliott is relishing the chance to play at home once again.

Asked what difference is made by our fans, the midfielder said: “It’s our fans, our fans are amazing, not only at Anfield but away games as well.

“They travel all around the world to watch us play, they drive us on and they’re our 12th man, as many people have said. For us playing at Anfield, walking out to You’ll Never Walk Alone, hearing the fans sing, there’s no better feeling and better buzz to go out and play our football.

“Even if we’re trailing or not having the best of games, they’re always there supporting us. As players, that’s all you can ask for. Anfield is one of a kind and our fans are special, there’s no doubt about that. I’m sure we’ll see it again tomorrow night.”

It’s not hard to be able to tell that the 21-year-old is a boyhood Red and if he wasn’t part of the action on the pitch, you can imagine the young man being fanatical in the stands instead.

Let’s hope we live up to this billing and, even with the planned protests, create an intimidating atmosphere for Atalanta.

Euro 2024 is now just a couple of months away, and while some players are all but assured of their involvement in Germany, others will be hoping to stake a late claim for a place in their nation’s squad.

Harvey Elliott falls into the latter category, with his fine form for Liverpool and the England under-21s prompting calls for him to get the nod from Gareth Southgate for the senior side this summer.

The 21-year-old spoke to the media on Wednesday ahead of the Reds’ Europa League quarter-final against Atalanta, and he was asked if he still harboured ambitions of receiving a call-up for the Three Lions for the finals in June.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

The £40,000-per-week maestro replied (via The Athletic): “I haven’t had any (conversations with Southgate) at the moment. My main priority is just Liverpool. If I put in the performances at Liverpool then you never know what will come around the corner.

“With the under-21s with England, I’m so happy to represent my country. For me it’s about focusing on Liverpool and if I am called upon at the end of the season I will be very happy and honoured, and willing to go. But it’s not going to happen if I’m not putting in the performances here.”

As impressive as Elliott has been for Liverpool this season, it’ll likely require something special for him to earn a seat on the plane to Germany in early June.

Southgate is notorious for sticking rigidly to players who’ve served him for a number of years, even if their form is inferior to others who are ripping it up in the Premier League or elsewhere, and it doesn’t help that the 21-year-old is yet to win a senior cap.

England will still have friendlies to play before their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia on 16 June, though, so the door hasn’t completely shut on any potential late bolters into the squad.

As Elliott says, all he can do is make the best of any game-time handed to him by Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool between now and the end of May, in the hope that it’ll be enough to win over the Three Lions manager.

We’d be thrilled for him if he makes the 23-player cut for the finals in Germany, but if not, it’ll be reassuring to know that he’ll enjoy a prolonged summer break this year, having helped his nation to European under-21 glory last July.

Harvey Elliott has made it quite clear that he’s not content to merely be a ‘super sub’ at Liverpool.

The 21-year-old has featured in 44 matches for the Reds this season but has started just six Premier League games, featuring for a full match only twice in the current top-flight campaign (Transfermarkt).

He spoke to the media at this afternoon’s press conference ahead of the Atalanta tie on Thursday night when he was asked about his role within Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Elliott replied (via Theo Squires on X): “I want to be starting games, walking out rather than coming on. That doesn’t mean I’m not grateful. I’m grateful for every opportunity I get.

“I’m young but I’m not a kid anymore. I’m growing up quickly. I need to wait for more opportunities and when I get them, I want to take them. I don’t like kicking up too much of a fuss. I’m part of the team.”

Having racked up 110 appearances for Liverpool, Elliott already has a wealth of high-level experience under his belt, but he’s yet to truly cement himself as a regular starter at Anfield.

He’s come off the bench to great effect on a few occasions this season, most notably with his stoppage time winner at Crystal Palace in December, along with winning the penalty from which Mo Salah equalised at Old Trafford on Sunday.

His ability to play in a variety of different positions makes him a hugely valuable option to bring on and use in whatever role the situation requires, but it’s understandable that he now wants to be starting regularly rather than being regarded as an impact substutute.

Elliott had been ever-present in Liverpool’s Europa League campaign until the game against Sparta Prague at Anfield last month, when he came on at half-time (Transfermarkt), so there’s a strong chance that he’ll start against Atalanta tomorrow night.

If he does and if he can duly put in a strong performance, that may yet see him included in the first XI more frequently during the final few weeks of the season.

His comments serve as a message not only to Klopp, but also to whoever replaces the German as our manager later this year.

Amid the frustration of failing to beat Manchester United yet again this season, there were some positives for Liverpool to take from the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

One of those was the latest impressive substitute outing from Harvey Elliott, whose lively 21-minute appearance saw him win the penalty from which Mo Salah netted a late equaliser for the Reds.

Taking to X, Neil Mellor praised the 21-year-old’s contribution after his introduction off the bench, adding that he may soon be too good for Jurgen Klopp to omit from the starting XI.

The LFC TV pundit stated: “Harvey Elliott was superb again when he came on yesterday – always makes an impact off the bench, can’t be far off getting a start”.

In addition to winning the crucial penalty against United, Elliott also posted an 85% pass success rate, won two duels and found a teammate with all three long passes that he played (Sofascore).

Liverpool’s number 19 has made 27 Premier League appearances this season, but only six of those have been from the start (Transfermarkt), with Klopp evidently viewing him as someone who’s capable of adding a fresh impetus from the bench when needed.

However, having excelled for England’s under-21s during the recent international break and set up four of our 11 goals in the Europa League round of 16 tie against Sparta Prague last month, the youngster is doing everything in his power to try and nudge his way into the starting XI more frequently.

The Reds are facing into a period of six matches in 17 days and still have some vital players out injured, so Elliott will almost certainly be handed a few starts throughout April as the manager seeks to keep his squad as fresh as possible during the all-important run-in to the campaign.

He could well be given the nod against Atalanta on Thursday night, or possibly Crystal Palace next weekend. His display at Old Trafford yesterday showed that he’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Stephen Warnock has been left baffled by some of the social media discourse over a decisive moment from Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Despite dominating for most of the game, the visitors needed a late Mo Salah penalty to come away with a point, the spot kick being awarded after Aaron Wan-Bissaka lunged in on Harvey Elliott.

The former Reds defender was discussing the incident alongside Dermot Gallagher on Sky SportsRef Watch on Monday, and he pointed to the absence of any protests from the Manchester United players as a clear indicator that referee Anthony Taylor made the right decision.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Warnock said: “I find it baffling. I’ve seen this all over social media – it’s a lot of Man Utd fans saying it, suggesting there’s no contact. They think it’s not a penalty.

“One thing we always talk about is the reaction of the player. Wan-Bissaka doesn’t argue it, no Manchester United player does. They all know it was a stonewall penalty.”

Although Wan-Bissaka didn’t make any contact on Elliott, it was still a wild and mistimed lunge from which the United defender was never going to get a toe to the ball.

As Warnock rightly says, the fact that neither the 26-year-old nor any of his teammates argued with Taylor – at a point in the game where his side led 2-1 with only a few minutes remaining – made it quite clear that a penalty was the correct call.

A rivalry as intense as this one will always give rise to extreme tribalism on social media, and the reaction of players to major refereeing decisions is invariably a more telling indicator.

Wan-Bissaka knew he’d erred in lunging in on Elliott, and that was evident in his body language as soon as the referee’s whistle had blown.

Neil Mellor has heaped praise upon one Liverpool player who’s been excelling on international duty over the past week.

While England’s senior side lost and drew against Brazil and Belgium respectively, their under-21s emphatically put Azerbaijan and Luxembourg to the sword by a combined score of 12-1 in their qualifying games for next year’s European Championship.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Harvey Elliott ran amok in both clashes, scoring twice in Baku and then setting up two goals in the 7-0 demolition of the latter in Bolton last night.

Taking to X after the Liverpool gem’s latest exploits, Mellor posted: “Incredible football brain this super talented youngster”.

The quality of Elliott’s two assists against Luxembourg was sparkling, teeing up Jamie Bynoe-Gittens for England’s third goal after a driving run through the middle, and later picking out Noni Madueke with a sublime through ball.

Even those two contributions were eclipsed somewhat by one moment of jaw-dropping artistry as he scooped the ball up before volleying a rabona pass to the right flank with absurdly consummate ease.

That’s before we get onto the eight key passes that he played in total (Sofascore), an extraordinary tally even when taking into account the paucity of the opposition.

The 20-year-old can’t be doing much more to bring himself to the attention of Gareth Southgate ahead of Euro 2024, and it’s baffling to think that he hasn’t yet won a senior cap when considering his form in recent months.

The England manager is notorious for remaining loyal to players who’ve served him for several years, but even he surely can’t ignore Elliott any longer. You’d like to think that the youngster’s Three Lions debut won’t be too far off, but whether it comes prior to this summer’s tournament is another matter.

Mellor has perfectly captured what many Liverpool fans are thinking about the Reds’ number 19 right now, with his under-21 exploits of recent days showcasing what an enormous talent we have in the attacker.

Both Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Noni Madueke were the fortunate recipients of brilliant assists from our No.19.

He and Jarell Quansah played a key role in a game in which they both started and finished for the Young Lions.

Let’s hope that the midfielder can carry this brilliant form back into his club football, where he’s already had a brilliant season under Jurgen Klopp.

Harvey Elliott earned more minutes for England’s U21s this evening as they thrashed Luxembourg 7-0 at Bolton Wanderer’s ground.

Our No. 19 played the full 90 minutes as part of a midfield three and while picking up two assists on the night he also decided to show off some of his party tricks during the rout.

The Liverpool man pulled off an outrageous bit of skill to control the ball and then volley the ball ‘rabona’ style out to the right winger.

It just goes to show the confidence that the former Fulham youngster is playing with at the moment.

Let’s hope he can have a strong end to the campaign with Jurgen Klopp’s side in the coming weeks.

There might be another five days to go before Liverpool resume their Premier League campaign, but Reds fans could be kept busy tonight with a host of Reds players set to represent their countries.

No fewer than 13 members of Jurgen Klopp’s squad could be in action over the next 12 hours or so, with most partaking in friendlies but one hoping to punch a ticket to a major tournament this summer.

We’ve looked at the baker’s dozen of LFC players who’ll be on international duty this evening and tonight, picking out a series of compelling narratives involving a few of those set to take to the pitch for their country.

Could Kostas be off to Germany?

At 5pm UK time, Georgia and Greece face off in Tbilisi, with both hoping to become the 22nd team to secure a place at Euro 2024.

Kostas Tsimikas will be in action for the visitors as he seeks a first major tournament appearance for his country, who last played on the big stage in the World Cup in Brazil a decade ago.

Should the Greeks qualify this evening, the Liverpool left-back could find himself up against clubmate Diogo Jota in the summer, as the winners of this match join Portugal, Turkey and Czechia in Group F at the finals in June.

Another chance for Elliott to fill his boots…and finally get the nod from Southgate?

Harvey Elliott quite enjoyed his most recent outing with England’s under-21s, scoring twice in their 5-1 win away to Azerbaijan last Friday, which took them a step closer to qualification for the European finals in 2025 as they seek to retain the trophy.

The Liverpool gem will fancy his chances of adding to his international tally tonight as Lee Carsley’s side host Luxembourg, which could present an opportunity for another convincing victory.

If the 20-year-old nets another brace and continues his fine form at club level, he’ll surely become impossible for Gareth Southgate to ignore when selecting the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024 – or so you’d like to think.

Friendship set aside for a couple of hours

Conor Bradley spoke glowingly about the helpful advice he’s been receiving from fellow Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson, although their friendship and camaraderie will be put to one side for a couple of hours tonight.

The elder of the two will be on the home side as Scotland continue their preparations for Euro 2024 against Northern Ireland, with the young right-back set to win his 15th senior cap – nearly as many games as he’s played for the Reds’ first team.

We know that both men will be fully committed once they cross the white line – just go easy on each other if you find yourself duelling, lads!

Could Liverpool duo be facing their next club boss?

We still don’t know who’ll be in charge of Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo at Liverpool next season, although one man who’s been touted as a possible successor to Klopp will be hoping to get one over on the Reds duo tonight.

Netherlands are in Frankfurt to take on Germany, who of course are under the stewardship of Julian Nagelsmann.

The ex-Bayern Munich manager has been touted among the contenders to potentially replace his fellow countryman in the Anfield dugout – will LFC’s Dutchmen be about to come up against their future boss?

A nervous night awaits by the Mediterranean

From a potential future Liverpool manager to the current one…Klopp will be crossing his fingers that all of his players come through the night unscathed, and he may be keeping an especially nervous eye on one man in particular.

Ibrahima Konate missed the Reds’ last three matches with a hamstring injury, although it’s been reported that he’s set to feature for France in their game against Chile in Marseille (Daily Mail).

His club boss won’t be overly keen on seeing the 24-year-old lining out in an international friendly so soon after being sidelined, and with a hectic and pivotal run-in to the season just around the corner.

Harvey Elliott has heavily hinted at his desire to continue with Liverpool beyond Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

The former Fulham academy prospect spoke of his greed for more silverware with the club.

“I want to keep winning trophies with this team. Both individually and collectively we are never content with what we have, we always want more,” the 20-year-old told lifestyle outlet SWM.

“I have a hunger for greatness. I hope the dedication, desire and motivation to do the small things well, will take me a long way in my career.

“Call it greedy, but I want to achieve more and experience everything this game has to offer, especially when it comes to trophies with this club.”

It’s perhaps no surprise, of course, coming from a boyhood Red who has been shown much in the way of trust at one of the biggest outfits in the footballing world.

Harvey Elliott is a huge talent

It’s perhaps sometimes forgotten just how exciting a talent our No.19 is.

At 20 years of age, Elliott’s potential is almost frightening. Especially so when you take into account how pivotal he is in this Liverpool squad.

Since his debut in 2019 (aged 16), the attacking midfielder has already amassed 107 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

He’s some talent, and whoever follows in our German tactician’s footsteps must ensure they nurture him moving forward.

Oh, and don’t forget about the likes of Conor Bradley, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, James McConnell, Bobby Clark, Jayden Danns, and plenty of others in the process!
