Liverpool bowed out of Europe with a whimper as their 1-0 win away to Atalanta tonight wasn’t enough to undo the damage of last week’s 0-3 defeat at Anfield.

However, some Reds fans may be left wondering if things might’ve worked out differently had the referee taken a different view of one moment in the first half at the Gewiss Stadium.

Shortly before half-time, Isak Hien was booked for handball as he cut out what could’ve been a gilt-edged chance for Luis Diaz, who argued that the Nerazzurri defender ought to have been sent off for denying what he felt was a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Speaking on punditry duty for TNT Sports, ex-LFC striker Peter Crouch raged (via Liverpool Echo): “I was screaming for a red card straight away. You can see he leans into the ball.

“There was a definite move of the arm, and I think Diaz is going in here. I think he takes the touch across him. I think that should be a red card. If you look here, he leans right into it and I don’t think the player is covering behind him.”

Fellow pundit and former Liverpool player Gary McAllister shared the Englishman’s indignation, saying: “I think it is denying a goal-scoring opportunity. If it gets to Diaz without the handball, I think his first touch is taking it towards the middle of the goal and away from the covering centre-back. You could argue that it should be a red.”

Referee François Letexier would’ve been within his rights to have sent Hien for an early bath, as the Atalanta defender quite deliberately handled the ball and prevented Diaz from being put through clean on goal.

Had the Sweden international been shown a red card, or had the Liverpool attacker got to the ball and gone on to double his team’s lead on the night, the second half could’ve had a very different feel to it. Imagine if the home side were trying to hang on with 10 men, or the Reds needed only one goal after the interval.

That incident has left a sense of ‘what if’ over our Europa League exit, but the harsh truth is that we simply didn’t do enough over the two games to deserve anything other than quarter-final elimination, having only played well during the first half tonight and been downright putrid at Anfield a week ago.

We could argue all night that Hien should’ve been sent off, but LFC still had 45-50 minutes to find two more goals and frankly didn’t look like scoring even one.

Europe is done – let’s make sure we don’t have any regrets over the final six matches of our Premier League campaign between now and 19 May.

Liverpool fans are always happy to reminisce about winning the Champions League in 2005 and Dietmar Hamann has provided his unique take on the game.

Speaking on ‘That Peter Crouch Podcast’, the German said: “The guy is in the shower, two minutes later somebody comes, ‘Djimi, you’ve got a carry on’.

“Now, once you finish mentally with a game, to get back into that zone, into the focus again, it’s near enough impossible.

“Djimi played as well as anyone in the second half and I always say my hero, the reason we won the Champions League, it’s not me, it’s not Steven Gerrard – it’s Djimi Traore.

“Because he had a goal-line clearance, he had a few last ditch tackles, one of the best tacklers, one of the quickest players and Djimi played as well as anyone and this is what set us apart from other teams.”

It’s certainly a huge claim from the 50-year-old and just goes to show how underappreciated Djimi Traore’s role was for the Istanbul heroics.

Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Jerzy Dudek will all have fair reason to be considered the biggest influence but the Frenchman was certainly appreciated by his teammate.

Peter Crouch believes Liverpool ‘shouldn’t hold any fear’ heading into their League Cup final clash with Chelsea.

Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage saw the Reds book their spot at Wembley next month where they’ll meet Mauricio Pochettino’s side who defeated Middlesbrough 6-2 across the two legs.

Despite the huge money that the Stamford Bridge-based outfit have spent in recent years they’ve struggled massively for consistency this term and currently find themselves ninth in the table – 17 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.

Form usually goes out the window for cup finals, but ex-Red Crouch believes Jurgen Klopp’s side should ‘come through’ the game ‘comfortably’.

“From Liverpool’s point of view, the Chelsea game shouldn’t hold any fear for them whatsoever,” Crouch told talkSPORT (via Rousing The Kop). “I’ve watched a lot of Chelsea this season and been highly disappointed. It’s not the Liverpool Chelsea game certainly from when I was playing in those games, they were a much better side than us at that time.

“At the moment they’re in a transitional period and Liverpool are the far better side. So, I think they’ll come through that comfortably.”

It certainly won’t be a walk in the park at the national stadium at the end of next month but there’s no doubt that we’re favourites heading into the game.

Chelsea still have players who can cause us problems, however, so we will need to be right at it from the start all over the pitch as we aim for a record-extending tenth League Cup trophy.

We defeated the Blues at Wembley twice during the 2021/22 campaign winning both the League Cup and FA Cup via penalty shootouts after goalless draws on both occasions.

Before facing Pochettino’s side in next month’s final we welcome them to Anfield next week in a huge Premier League game.

We earned a point at Stamford Bridge back in August but we’ll be searching for three points this time around.

Peter Crouch has said that Liverpool have a ‘raw’ talent in their squad who he believes is ‘going to have a huge impact’ at Anfield.

The former Reds striker wasn’t speaking about an up-and-coming academy prospect, but rather Darwin Nunez, who – despite being in double figures for both goals and assists just over halfway through the season – continues to be questioned by pundits.

The 42-year-old can empathise with the Uruguayan, having been made to wait until his 19th appearance before finally scoring his first LFC goal after joining from Southampton in 2005 (Transfermarkt).

Crouch gave credit to Liverpool fans for their unwavering support of the 24-year-old, even after missing gilt-edged chances, and suggested that the number 9 is at the right club in that regard.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the ex-England international said of Nunez: “He’s in the best place for him to blossom. I remember my time when I signed for Liverpool, I had a really difficult spell at the start. I think many, many Premier League clubs would’ve washed their hands of a striker who couldn’t score, certainly after winning the Champions League in the manner they did in Istanbul.

“Darwin Nunez, yeah he’s had a few teething problems and I think he is still a bit raw, but I looked at him last night and I still think he’s going to have a huge impact.

“What’s amazing is the fans, how well they’ve stuck by him. He has got that support and that confidence of the manager, his teammates and the fans as well. If given the time, I think he’ll eventually blossom into the player he could become.”

Even when numerous pundits are taking aim at Nunez for not being the most clinical of strikers, Liverpool fans can see that the Uruguayan is a player whose effort never drops and who always gets himself into positions from which he could score.

As illustrated by his assists tally this season, the 24-year-old offers plenty to the team while still keeping his goals tally nicely ticking over.

As Crouch says, just wait until the ex-Benfica marksman truly gets going at Anfield – that’s when opposition defences will be outright terrified of the Reds’ number 9!

Liverpool fans would kill for a piece of genuine memorabilia but players are so used to having it lying around, it just becomes normal and this is clearly the case for Peter Crouch.

Speaking on ‘That Peter Crouch Podcast’, the 42-year-old said: “playing in the Champions League final, I got the losers medal and I literally couldn’t tell you where that is.

“Like, you’re literally, you’re kind of 90 minutes away from having something that you’ll cherish for the rest of your life and something you can tell your grand-kids about, to then not even know where it is”.

It is a strange thought that you can lose a medal from a Champions League final but when it’s from a game that was lost against AC Milan, it does also make a bit of sense.

There’d be thousands of collectors who’d love to get their hands on it but any top pro would probably hate to have a runners-up medal (except for Kyle Walker).

Liverpool fans will be hoping that our stay on the top of the Premier League is not short lived and that we can achieve ultimate success this season, something Peter Crouch has shared his thoughts on.

Manchester City still appear to be the main contenders in the opinion of most supporters but nobody should be ruling the Reds out yet.

Peter Crouch has claimed that one of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool stars has ‘been like a new signing’ this season.

Luis Diaz missed 31 games with a knee injury last term but has started the new campaign sharply and played an instrumental role in the Reds’ 2-0 defeat of Everton at Anfield yesterday.

The former FC Porto wide man offers energy, intensity and a serious amount of pace on the left flank and ex-Red was eager to praise the Colombian following yesterday’s Merseyside derby victory.

“I love Diaz,” Crouch told TNT Sports (via Rousing The Kop). “He’s been like a new signing, like bringing another £100m player in, because obviously his injuries last season. Him coming in just changes things.”

Last season was a campaign to forget as we failed to pick up any silverware and missed out on a top four finish.

We missed our No. 7 massively last term so it’s great to see him back to full fitness and making things happen at the top end of the pitch.

As well as being a quality player when he’s got the ball at his feet, the 26-year-old works his socks off when he doesn’t have the ball and he’s the perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

To think that we signed the winger, who our German tactician has previously labelled as ‘really special’ (as quoted by One Football), for just £37.5m (BBC Sport) is quite remarkable. We agree with Crouch who has claimed Diaz is like a £100m player!

Peter Crouch had Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk howling with laughter over a famous one-liner quip from the former Reds striker.

The duo discussed a range of topics while sharing a car journey for TNT Sports‘ Around The Block feature, which ended with the Dutch defender answering a series of quickfire questions.

One of them was ‘If you weren’t a footballer, what would you be?’, to which the 32-year-old answered that he’d most likely be working as a lawyer.

Crouch took that opportunity to rehash his legendary reply to that question from before, joking that he’d be a ‘virgin’, with that response eliciting plenty of laughter from Van Dijk.

The Liverpool captain is evidently a fan of the former Anfield striker’s affable wit!

Peter Crouch has admitted that it wasn’t until he saw one Liverpool player in the flesh that he realised just how good they are.

The former Reds striker was speaking about Dominik Szoboszlai and the club’s other summer signings to Virgil van Dijk in TNT SportsAround The Block feature ahead of today’s Merseyside derby when he waxed lyrical over the 22-year-old.

Crouch said from the driver’s seat: “Szoboszlai, for me, I don’t know, he just looks like a Rolls-Royce, like a top player. I didn’t realise quite how good he was until I saw him close up.”

He then asked the Liverpool captain if the Hungarian has been the newcomer ‘who’s impressed you the most’, to which the Dutchman replied: “He’s been an outstanding player for us so far. The energy he showed, the will to win. 80, 90 minutes, he keeps running.”

Many Reds fans probably felt similarly to the 42-year-old in thinking that we knew Szoboszlai had the potential to be a shrewd signing, but it wasn’t until seeing him at Anfield that we truly realised what a magnificent footballer we have at the club.

If the Hungary playmaker can make a decisive impact against Everton today, that’ll repay yet another sizeable chunk of the £60m transfer fee, which is already proving to be very much worth it.

Peter Crouch believes Liverpool are ‘definitely in with a shout’ to win the Premier League this season but believes Manchester City may have too much for both the Reds and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

City have won five of the last six league titles, pipping Liverpool to the title by a single point on two separate occasions, with the Anfield outfit winning the other during the 2019/20 campaign.

Spurs currently lead the way this term after eight games but ex-Red Crouch doesn’t believe the north London outfit will be involved in the title race come May.

“I think they [Liverpool] are definitely in with a shout. I think it’s them and Arsenal chasing City,” Crouch told TNT Sports (via Rousing The Kop).

“If you had to hang your hat on it or, you had to have a bet on it for your life, then you’d say City win the league. But I think Liverpool can be the best of the rest and push them all the way.”

City have shown frailties already this season having lost two Premier League games in succession while also being dumped out of the League Cup by Newcastle.

There’s no doubting that they remain a world-class side but there’s no reason why we can’t challenge them all the way this term.

We’re going to need some luck with injuries along the way but Jurgen Klopp has built a squad capable of competing on all four fronts.

We’re currently three points behind league leaders Spurs and a point behind City but it’s still early doors so let’s continue our strong start to the campaign with three points against Everton on Saturday.

Peter Crouch has pinpointed one factor which he believes will tip the scales in Saturday’s Premier League clash between Tottenham and Liverpool.

The 42-year-old, who played for both clubs, gave his prediction for the game on his eponymous podcast, and he reckons Jurgen Klopp’s side might have a crucial ‘edge’.

The former Reds and England striker said: “It’s a hard one that, because I started at Spurs but I have such an allegiance to Liverpool.

“[It’s] a massive one, but I think Liverpool nick this one. The danger is the front three are emphatic. I think Spurs are a joy to watch but I just think Liverpool have got the edge.”

With the joint-fourth best attacks in the Premier League (15 goals each) going head to head this evening, it could well develop into a shootout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs haven’t exactly suffered in the final third despite Harry Kane’s departure, with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski netting twice each in the top flight this term and Son Heung-min already on five goals (WhoScored).

Over at Anfield, the Reds’ attack of Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo have already struck 11 times between them in the league (WhoScored), and Dominik Szoboszlai has shown that he’s well capable of popping up from midfield and finishing in style.

Tottenham will surely be hoping to prey upon Liverpool’s curious tendency to concede first in games this season, although Klopp’s side have shown on numerous occasions that they won’t panic in that event, having routinely battled back from adversity to put together a seven-match winning streak.

It has the makings of an enthralling encounter in north London, and hopefully Crouch’s prediction turns out to be spot-on!

Peter Crouch believes it was a ‘harsh’ call to award Harvey Elliott’s late entry on the scoresheet to Wolves’ Hugo Bueno as an own goal.

The England youngster wheeled away in jubilant celebration, mixing with the fans in the away end along with Scouse Academy graduate Curtis Jones.

“Harsh that. I think it’s harsh!” the former Red spoke on TNT Sports (via the Football Review YouTube channel).

“It starts with the goalkeeper. I have to say, Nunez’s hold-up play there… he might have caught him in the face a little bit. I’ve played against Dawson and he’s a strong, tough defender when you get up against him, so to roll him there I thought was fantastic.

“Comes to Mo Salah and great strike from Harvey Elliott. I think it’s harsh to take it off him. Might have been going slightly wide but who cares? Give the young lad the goal.”

An unfair result for Mo Salah too, one could argue, with the Egyptian only allowed to walk away with just the two assists for his part in a dramatic second-half comeback from the men in red.

The result, as ever, will be the most important thing for Elliott and his teammates, though we’d certainly agree that we’d rather see a young player’s confidence boosted by a goal added to his tally for the season.

If you were to ask Bueno his thoughts on the matter, we dare say he’d agree on the matter!

Still, as Joe Cole was right to bring up after, the move showcases some serious development on our young gem’s part: “That shows to me he’s developing his game because he could have stood still but he just moved because he knows Mo Salah’s going to put it in the right area.”

The former Fulham man has hardly put a foot wrong when called upon this season, with Dominik Szoboszlai working overtime so far to keep him out of the starting-XI.

Peter Crouch has urged his former club Liverpool not to sell Mo Salah in the final week of the summer transfer window, describing the Egyptian as ‘irreplaceable’.

The 31-year-old has been the subject of reported interest from Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad, who are prepared to offer him a gargantuan wage packet to try and lure him to the Middle East (Sky Sports).

Stan Collymore told CaughtOffside that a seismic offer in the region of £300m could be too much for the Reds to turn down, but another ex-Anfield striker has implored the club not to sell the legendary number 11.

Speaking about Salah on TNT Sports on Saturday, Crouch said: “No, he’s the one player that is irreplaceable. I don’t care what you say. I mean, if you sell him for £100m, £200m, you can’t replace him. I think obviously they’ll be trying tooth and nail to keep him.”

However, the 42-year-old is fearful that Liverpool could eventually cave if a massive offer comes from Al-Ittihad, saying: “This Saudi thing doesn’t seem to be going away. If he wants to choose that path, I think it’ll be very difficult to keep him.”

From a purely financial perspective, a nine-figure offer for Salah could be tough to dismiss, given that he’s now 31 and that the influx of cash could be put towards multiple signings for Liverpool.

However, such is the Egyptian’s importance to Jurgen Klopp’s side that selling him so late in the transfer window simply can’t be entertained, no matter what figure is presented to the Reds.

There’s not nearly enough time to bring in a replacement of similar quality with six days until the deadline, while LFC must also send out a statement that they won’t be intimidated into caving into the incomprehensible riches of the Saudi Pro League.

What this ongoing rumour does raise, though, is the possibility that Salah could be playing his final season at Liverpool.

With his current deal running until 2025 (Transfermarkt), it’s not unthinkable that the Reds might take the money for him in 10-12 months’ time, but they should only do if they’re certain that they have just as good a player to come straight into Klopp’s team.

Crouch is right – for now, the Egyptian King is simply irreplaceable for LFC.

Liverpool are ready for a busy summer of transfer business and Peter Crouch has suggested that signing a player in one position, could then lead to unleashing another member of our squad.

Speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast, Peter Crouch discussed Trent Alexander-Arnold: “Other nations would build a team around him… if you think about it, [Liverpool have] played Harvey Elliott in there, they’ve had [Fabio] Carvalho in there, players like Curtis Jones, young players who are all un-tried and untested.

“So, why can’t you give [Alexander-Arnold] a go and actually play him in midfield and get a solid right-back in? I genuinely believe he could be one of the best players in the league in that [central midfield] position”.

If Jurgen Klopp could land a ‘solid right-back’ and then no longer have to play our No.66 as an inverted full-back but an out-and-out midfielder, also solving our need to strengthen the middle of our pitch, then we may be able to fix two holes with the same piece of tape.

Adding the Scouser then as both a back-up defender and a solid midfield option would really enhance our squad options and formations we could use against lesser and better opponents – so this could be an interesting call all-round.
