Liverpool fans will be feeling a lot less confident about a silverware-laden end to the season at the moment than we did a few weeks ago and David James has now shared his thoughts on our loss to Crystal Palace.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the ex-Red said: “[Liverpool] actually did everything they needed to do and they were one or two inches out from winning the game comfortably.”

Goals change matches is the easiest terminology to use and had any of our many chances found the back of the net, it would have provided confidence that a second would soon follow.

That wasn’t the case though and as much as we deserved a goal, you can’t win any games if you don’t find the back of the net.

Liverpool fans will still be coming to terms with the loss against Crystal Palace that has seriously hampered our chances of winning the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp gave his honest take on events.

Speaking with beIN Sports, the boss said: “If we play like we did in the first half, how should we win the league?

“If we play like we did in the second half, we can win football games.

Although Arsenal losing softened the blow, it just means that we had a greater chance of putting success in our hands but instead let it pass us by.

Jamie Carragher was almost lost for words over the manner in which Liverpool fell behind to Crystal Palace at Anfield this afternoon.

Reds fans hoping for an emphatic response to the Atalanta thrashing on Thursday would’ve been left raging in the 14th minute when Eberechi Eze was left with all the time and space in the world to slot the ball past the returning Alisson Becker and put the visitors in front.

Speaking on commentary duty for Sky Sports (14:17), the ex-LFC defender was fuming over the amount of room which was afforded to the 25-year-old to score one of the easiest goals of his career.

Carragher said: “The space there, you cannot believe. Another shocking start by Liverpool.”

Liverpool needed a strong start to dispel the negativity which stemmed from Thursday night’s Europa League humiliation, but instead they made it far too easy for Palace to draw first blood at Anfield.

Quite how Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk left Eze in so much room to pick his spot to score will have left Reds fans and Jurgen Klopp almost speechless with horror.

It could’ve been even worse just a few minutes later when Jean-Philippe Mateta beat Alisson, only for Andy Robertson to rush back and make a heroic goalline clearance.

That’s now 21 matches out of 51 matches this season that Liverpool have conceded the first goal. They’ve only been beaten six times so far, but that statistic could well rise if they don’t kick their atrocious habit of limping out of the traps and letting the opposition hit the front.

Liverpool aim to banish the demons of their Europa League humiliation by Atalanta when they welcome Crystal Palace to Anfield in the Premier League this afternoon.

The Reds have the chance to reclaim top spot in the division for a few hours at least if they can inflict defeat on the Eagles, who drew 1-1 in this fixture last season and were beaten by a stoppage time Harvey Elliott goal at Selhurst Park when the sides met earlier in the current campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have three consecutive Premier League away games coming up in the space of seven days after today’s match, so nothing less than victory will do if they’re to have any realistic hopes of finishing ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal.

Liverpool can lay down a marker to the Gunners, who play later on Sunday, if they get the job done against Oliver Glasner’s side at Anfield in the 2pm kick-off.

Liverpool v Crystal Palace team news

Klopp was questioned in some quarters for fielding a much-changed line-up against Atalanta on Thursday, with his decision to start with the likes of Mo Salah, Luis Diaz, Dominik Szoboszlai and Andy Robertson on the bench backfiring as the Reds lost 3-0.

He’s made a few alterations again today, with five changes from the team which started that defeat.

Alisson Becker returns to the line-up after two months out through injury, and there’s two changes to the defence in front of him, with Conor Bradley and Robertson coming back into the starting XI in the full-back positions.

The midfield three remains unchanged from the defeat to Atalanta, with Salah and Diaz restored to the attack as Elliott and Cody Gakpo drop out.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota are among the substitutes once more, with Szoboszlai also remaining on the bench.

Oliver Glasner has teased a significant piece of Crystal Palace team news ahead of their visit to Anfield on Sunday.

The Eagles were unable to do Liverpool a favour last weekend, going down 4-2 at home to Manchester City despite taking an early lead, although they had consolation in the form of Michael Olise returning from injury off the bench after two months on the sidelines.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference this afternoon, the 49-year-old suggested that the French winger could be in line to make his first start since the end of January against the Reds.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Glasner said of the forward (via cpfc.co.uk): “He’s closer [to starting] than the week before. He had the whole week training with us.

“We’ve had a very good week in training, high quality and a lot of intensity, which is very important because Liverpool are maybe that team in the world that plays with the highest pressure – you never have time. It’s been a really good week and Michael was part of it, so he’s close to starting.”

Olise was linked with a potential move to Liverpool during the January transfer window, so the Anfield hierarchy may be watching his performance with interest if indeed he’s selected to start on Sunday.

The 22-year-old had been in flying form before his injury, with four goals and three assists in six Premier League games (Transfermarkt), and he’ll definitely need to be watched closely by the Reds’ defence – certainly a lot more closely than Atalanta’s attackers were last night.

While he’s yet to score or set up a goal against us in five previous tussles, the Frenchman may well fancy his chances of doing so this weekend, based on LFC’s horrific performance in the Europa League on Thursday.

We always want to see the best players in action at the highest level, and it’s great that Olise is now back after two months out injured. We just hope that Liverpool can keep him and his teammates quiet on Sunday!

Liverpool have discovered the identity of the referee for their top-flight clash at home to Crystal Palace next Sunday.

The Premier League have confirmed the appointments of match officials for the weekend’s fixtures, with Chris Kavanagh set to take charge of the game at Anfield.

Simon Bennett and Dan Robathan will run the touchlines, with Keith Stroud as fourth official. Michael Oliver is on VAR, with assistance from Stuart Burt.

This will be Kavanagh’s fifth time taking charge of a Liverpool game this season, having refereed the home wins over West Ham and Nottingham Forest, as well as the Carabao Cup final (Transfermarkt).

He was also the man in the middle for the 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Anfield in December, when he missed a blatant handball by Martin Odegaard in the penalty area and was subsequently done no favours by David Coote, who had the luxury of VAR and still somehow failed to intervene.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Oliver was also at the centre of a spot kick storm in a meeting of two title rivals on Merseyside this term, having neglected to sanction Jeremy Doku for a high tackle on Alexis Mac Allister when Manchester City visited L4 a month ago. He too was let down by Stuart Attwell in Stockley Park.

Let’s hope that Liverpool can get the better of Palace for the second time in 2023/24 – a repeat of the 1-1 draw when the Eagles last came to Anfield would be a huge dent to our title hopes – and also that Kavanagh and his refereeing team aren’t dominating the post-match discussion.

Liverpool have reportedly discovered how much it’ll cost them to sign one of their rumoured transfer targets.

According to Football Insider, the Reds are keeping a close eye on Michael Olise, who’s had a new release clause of more than £40m inserted into his contract at Crystal Palace, an increase on the previous clause of £35m.

LFC are reported to have dispatched scouts to watch the 22-year-old in action and evaluate whether to pursue him as a long-term successor to Mo Salah at Anfield.

Although it seems more likely that the Frenchman would move in the summer rather than this month, it’s understood that the Eagles face a ‘hard battle’ to keep him at Selhurst Park despite signing a new deal just five months ago.

Olise has been in flying form of late for Palace, with four goals and an assist in their last four Premier League games (Transfermarkt), although a hamstring problem he incurred against Brentford a week ago will sideline him for the foreseeable future.

He’s been dubbed an ‘incredible‘ player by his Eagles teammate Eberechi Eze and hailed as ‘excellent‘ by his adoring manager Roy Hodgson, who you’ll recall had a brief and troubled tenure at Liverpool 13 seasons ago.

His five-goal tally for the season so far equals that of Luis Diaz, who’s played more than twice the number of minutes that the 22-year-old has had during an injury-hit campaign in south London (Transfermarkt).

Olise could therefore be a tremendous backup to Salah on the right flank at Liverpool, if they’re willing to stump up the £40m+ that his release clause entails, although the one concern among Anfield chiefs may be the Frenchman’s fitness troubles over the past 12 months.

Nonetheless, that kind of figure in today’s market for a player with such a fine goals-per-game ratio isn’t over the top by any means. Merseyside scouts could be compiling quite the dossier on the Palace winger during the second half of the season.

Two Sky Sports pundits cited an incident from Liverpool’s win over Crystal Palace on Saturday to highlight the baffling inconsistency which abounds among Premier League referees.

Following an interminable VAR review, Jarell Quansah had a penalty given against him when he was deemed to have caught Jean-Philippe Mateta in the box. Play had initially continued before Andy Madley changed his decision upon consulting the pitchside monitor.

Later that day, Douglas Luiz made contact with Gabriel Jesus in a not wholly dissimilar incident in Aston Villa’s 1-0 defeat of Arsenal, but no penalty was awarded by on-field referee Jarred Gillet or VAR Michael Salisbury.

Speaking on Sky SportsRef Watch as they compared the two incidents, Stephen Warnock said of the Liverpool one: “Right and wrong comes into it. Clear and obvious doesn’t. It’s exactly the same as the Aston Villa one [Luiz on Jesus] where you look at it and go ‘he’s kicked through’.

“The Aston Villa one is more of a penalty than this one… we’re after consistency.”

Sue Smith then added: “If you give one, you have to give both of them.”

Firstly, the decision to award Palace a penalty for a foul by Quansah was correct, although it was galling to see it called back after nearly two minutes of play.

Remember how the VAR for Liverpool’s defeat at Tottenham a few weeks ago said they couldn’t go back and award Luis Diaz the goal he should’ve had for an incorrect offside decision because 30 seconds was deemed too long of a gap for which to intervene? The process is simply abominable at times.

Also, both Warnock and Smith were right to state that if the Reds defender’s challenge on Mateta was a foul, then Luiz’s on Jesus should also have been given. Indeed, the Aston Villa one looked the clearer of the two offences, notwithstanding that Arsenal’s defeat was beneficial to LFC in the title race.

It yet again serves to highlight a horrendous degree of inconsistency between referees at Premier League level, further eroding whatever trust might still remain from the public in England’s foremost officials to do their jobs without controversy erupting.

Dermot Gallagher believes that the officials got one big call wrong during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Reds were trailing 1-0 with 15 minutes of normal time remaining when Jordan Ayew – who’d previously been booked – was shown a second yellow card for impeding Harvey Elliott on the halfway line.

Speaking on Sky Sports News‘ Ref Watch segment on Monday morning, the former Premier League referee believes that the Ghanaian’s foul wasn’t worthy of the second booking which saw him depart prematurely.

When asked if there was enough on it to warrant a yellow card, Gallagher replied: “I thought not. All I can think is the referee thinks Ayew is breaking a promising attack, which he’s not.”

READ MORE: (Video) James Milner reveals brilliant reason why he chose to swap Man City for Liverpool

Taking the incident in isolation, Ayew knew he was doing in tripping Elliott, and it probably warranted a yellow card in and of itself.

However, the first booking Andy Madley had shown to the 32-year-old – for stopping Virgil van Dijk from taking a quick free kick – was harsh, so the referee had made a rod for his own back by the time the Palace attacker committed the offence which saw him given his marching orders.

Neither incident seemed like much to merit him being sent off – even combined they were no worse than Cristian Romero’s stamp on Callum Wilson yesterday, which saw the Tottenham defender shown yellow rather than red.

Some may argue that, having already booked him, the referee could’ve let Ayew off with a final warning for the foul on Elliott, although then he might’ve faced questions as to why he didn’t give a yellow card which would’ve been warranted more than the first one he’d shown.

The rights and wrongs may continue to be discussed, but what’s beyond doubt is that the Ghanaian’s dismissal was a turning point on Saturday, with Liverpool seizing upon the one-player advantage to score twice and salvage victory from the jaws of defeat.

Dermot Gallagher is steadfast in his belief that the officials got one major decision correct in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

During the first half at Selhurst Park, the home side were awarded a penalty when Virgil van Dijk fouled Odsonne Edouard inside the box, before a subsequent VAR review saw the decision overturned for a foul by Will Hughes on Wataru Endo in the lead-up to the initial spot kick.

Reflecting on the incident for Ref Watch on Sky Sports News, the former Premier League whistler insisted that on-field referee Andy Madley ultimately arrived at the right call.

Gallagher said: “I thought it was a foul and I still think it is now. I also think it was a foul by Van Dijk [for the initial penalty] and a yellow card.

“Hughes pushes him over and catches him with a leg. When you look at it again, it’s very difficult to say it’s not a foul.”

Liverpool fans – and indeed many pundits and supporters of other clubs – have justifiably castigated the operation of VAR at various points throughout the season, but the above incident is a case study in how the technology can actually be applied correctly.

The penalty would 100% have stood had Hughes not fouled Endo beforehand, but the subsequent review showed a clear infringement by the Palace midfielder on the Japan captain, so the officials were right to call it back and strike off the spot kick.

It’s noteworthy that Gallagher is speaking from an objective standpoint, with no bias for or against either team; and nor was he being a bland ‘yes man’ for referees, having voiced disagreement with other decisions from the weekend on this morning’s Ref Watch segment.

Despite Roy Hodgson’s no-holds-barred grievances about the refereeing performance on Saturday, the officials came to the right conclusion in reversing the first-half penalty because of the foul on Endo.

If we go back to what the Crystal Palace boss said only in September (via County Press): “I feel so sorry for the referees” – it screams of hypocrisy.

Liverpool endured the biggest injustice under the new way of officiating the game, we wrongly saw a goal disallowed and it was down to the fault of the implementation of the new system.

When everyone should have backed our push to try and improve the way in which our game is officiated, they instead buried their heads in the sand and stood up for Howard Webb and the PGMOL.

We’re in a title race and have lost just once this season, if the point or points we would have earned had the game against Tottenham seen the correct decisions made, cost us at the end of the campaign – we’re the ones who should be complaining.

Instead, we see coaches criticise much smaller decisions and attempt to evoke a level of sympathy that they did not offer Jurgen Klopp and ourselves.

Roy Hodgson has accused Virgil van Dijk of contributing towards Jordan Ayew’s dismissal in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Ghanaian was given his marching orders by Andy Madley for two yellow card offences, and the 76-year-old raged at the Reds captain for his apparent role in the first of those, which the Eagles’ number 9 received for preventing the visitors from taking a quick free kick.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, a clearly dismayed Hodgson said of the Palace forward: “He’s been on four yellow cards for three games. He’s shown incredible discipline. Van Dijk took the opportunity to get him the first yellow card by kicking the ball against him from a few yards away. That’s very disappointing.

“If you’re Liverpool Football Club, you don’t need players of Van Dijk’s quality and status in the game trying to get a player a yellow card for kicking the ball at his foot.

“The second one I thought was a good challenge, and even if it was deemed a foul – which it could be – it wasn’t a yellow card.”

It’s understandable that Hodgson would feel as if Palace were hard done by this afternoon, given the litany of disputed refereeing incidents at Selhurst Park, but to accuse Van Dijk of getting Ayew booked is disappointing from the Eagles boss.

The Liverpool captain had every right to try and take a quick free kick, especially with the Reds having just gone 1-0 behind with half an hour remaining, and we highly doubt that his thought process in that moment was ‘let’s get this guy booked’.

It’s probably not something the boyhood Red wants to be known for but his impact off the bench in the Premier League this season has been hugely important.

Football is very much a squad game and in recent weeks we’ve seen the likes of Wataru Endo, Trent Alexander-Arnold and now the 20-year-old be the hero, with the latter proving his worth once again.

Harvey Elliott came up with a fabulous goal in stoppage time to complete yet another turnaround for Liverpool in the Premier League this season.

The Reds were trailing 1-0 going into the final 15 minutes before Jordan Ayew’s red card and Mo Salah’s equaliser changed the complexion of the match.

In the first of 10 indicated minutes of added time, the Egyptian turned provider for Elliott, who collected the ball 30 yards from goal and surged to the edge of the penalty area before lashing it past the despairing dive of substitute goalkeeper Remi Matthews.

The goal ensured that Liverpool plucked yet another victory plucked from the jaws of defeat, and it could be a huge one in the final assessment at the end of the season.

Mo Salah has become just the fifth player in Liverpool’s 131-year history to score 200 goals for the club, netting a 77th-minute equaliser against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Almost immediately after Jordan Ayew was sent off for the home side, the Reds went on the attack through Cody Gakpo. He crossed to Curtis Jones, whose shot was blocked by Joel Ward.

The ball then fell kindly for the Egyptian King to lash it home past Sam Johnstone with the aid of a deflection to reach the double ton in a red shirt and potentially spare them from just a second Premier League defeat of the season, at the time of writing.
