Liverpool fans, staff and players alike were left clutching at their hairlines as Curtis Jones failed to put capitalise on Cody Gakpo’s sumptuous through ball.

The Scouse Academy graduate was put through on goal in the second-half and his resulting miss inspired scenes of dejection on the Reds bench.

Substituted striker Darwin Nunez was spotted venting his frustrations at one of the seats as the Merseysiders stumbled toward yet another home defeat in the space of three days.

Liverpool fans couldn’t believe what they were watching in the defeat to Crystal Palace today, and neither could one pundit during the second half.

Despite the Reds having a succession of chances after the interval, they failed to find a way past Dean Henderson and succumbed to a gift of a goal to Eberechi Eze in the 14th minute.

The home side’s profligacy was summed up on 75 minutes when Curtis Jones was through one-on-one, but missed the target completely from penalty spot range with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live in response to that huge let-off for the visitors, Neil Lennon said: “This game is bonkers. It’s absolutely bonkers. I’ve never seen misses like this in my life. Jones is one on one, steadies himself and puts it wide. It’s an incredible miss.”

When Jones contrived to fluff that glorious opportunity, you got a sense that it simply wasn’t going to be Liverpool’s day, and so it proved.

The Reds have failed to score in only three games all season, and two of those have been in the last 72 hours. At least there was more of a performance today than against Atalanta, but the wastefulness from Jurgen Klopp’s side was unforgivable.

Manchester City and Arsenal fans must’ve been horizontal with laugher at the chances that we passed up against Palace, and six shots on target out of 21 in the full match simply isn’t a good enough strike rate.

Champions prove their worth during the run-in to the season, either to drive home a sizeable advantage or hit the turbo on the final straight to clinch glory.

Unfortunately, Liverpool are faltering with the finish line in sight; and even with both of the other title contenders still within arm’s reach, momentum is well and truly against us after this weekend.

Quite simply, there’s no more room for error for the rest of the season, and even then we’re left needing favours from other teams, but the Reds simply need to be better at taking care of their own business.

Jamie Carragher has sought to clarify what he meant by advising Liverpool to go with a ‘second string’ line-up for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Atalanta.

The Reds’ European involvement is dangling by a thread after they lost 0-3 at home to the Serie A side last Thursday, leaving them with a huge mountain to climb for the return fixture in Bergamo later this week.

The Sky Sports pundit advocated for a much-changed line-up to be fielded in Italy in deference to the Premier League campaign, although he’s insisted that he wasn’t calling for a virtual under-21 team to be put out against the Nerazzurri.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo on Saturday, Carragher clarified: “When I said ‘second string’ I wasn’t talking about the kids. I meant, you know, give Trent [Alexander-Arnold] a game, give Diogo Jota a game, Curtis Jones, maybe the goalkeeper [Alisson Becker] plays.

“When you’ve got to play four away in 10 days because they’ve got to go to Atalanta on the Thursday and then Fulham on the Sunday, I was just thinking playing your best team and trying to give it absolutely everything and it might not be enough, because it is going to be tough.

“Then you go to Fulham and you’re not at your best and it doesn’t go well at Fulham, you are then falling behind in the league. The Premier League title is so much bigger than the Europa League. We all want to win both but we have put ourselves in a difficult position but we have still got ourselves in a great position in the league.

“We’re in a better position in the league than we are now in the Europa League, so for me I just think the league is too important, especially if we win against Crystal Palace. Fulham is much more important than Atalanta and even getting through.”

There’s logic to Carragher’s suggestion that Jurgen Klopp may be best advised to play the percentages and field a much-changed line-up next Thursday, given the scale of the task that Liverpool face in Europe amid a Premier League title charge where there’s no room for error.

The German was questioned over the alterations he made to the team for the first leg, with his decision to start with Mo Salah, Luis Diaz, Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai on the bench backfiring as then Reds sunk to a heavy defeat.

However, considering the spate of injuries with which we’ve had to contend earlier this season, it makes sense for the manager to utilise the enviable squad depth that he now has, especially with such a hectic period of crucial fixtures coming up.

Obviously we want to see Liverpool excelling on all fronts, but if a European exit on Thursday is the price to pay for winning every Premier League match (and ultimately the domestic title) until the end of the campaign, most fans would probably sign up for that right now.

Klopp could still go with a reasonably strong team against Atalanta and make a few alterations for the Fulham clash three days later with what he’d consider to be the ‘best’ starting XI available to him.

Curtis Jones has lauded the ease with which his teammate Alexis Mac Allister is playing at Liverpool.

The Scouser returned to the side for a 17-minute cameo as the Argentine struck with a stunning effort to put the hosts back in control of the tie with Sheffield United.

“I mean, you saw it [the goal] yourself, it doesn’t have to come from me. I was saying it was a little bit of a mishit! But it was struck so clean,” the Reds’ Academy graduate told the club’s official website.

“We have seen it already, his goal against Fulham [in December] where he has put it in the far corner. He is a big part of this team and ever since he came, you can see he is playing with a confidence and ease.

“He gets hold of the game by the scruff of the neck. He showed it again there. For somebody like me coming back after a long time [out], it’s good that a lad like him is on the pitch – it helps me, it helps the team and he showed that again.”

The No.17 had missed the last four league games with an ankle injury. This unfortunately followed playing himself into a remarkable run of form in 2023/24.

Where does Curtis Jones fit in?

That seems a harsh question (unintentionally so!) given how integral a role the midfielder played in the first-half of our campaign.

With Mac Allister moving higher up the pitch and Wataru Endo free to showcase his talents in the No.6, however, it does raise a selection headache for Jurgen Klopp.

It’s a welcome problem to have, of course, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Jones, Ryan Gravenberch and Harvey Elliott effectively competing for the final spot in the side.

How quickly things changed after the midfield mediocrity of the prior campaign!

Jurgen Klopp has shared news of a potential injury boost for Liverpool ahead of their next Premier League fixture.

The Reds went top of the table yesterday after a 2-1 home win over Brighton, and they’re at Anfield again on Thursday night to welcome bottom club Sheffield United.

Speaking after Sunday’s match, the 56-year-old provided an update on Curtis Jones, who’s been sidelined since mid-February after he hurt his ankle in the 4-1 victory at Brentford.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Klopp told reporters (via Liverpool Echo): “In full training is Curtis. He trained with us on Saturday but then had an extra [session] because the minus-1 session (day before the game) is not the intensity that Curtis needed.

“He was with us and then had an extra shift. He will be in full training but then exactly for the [Sheffield United] game let me have a look on that. All the others, slowly but surely but not yet [for Thursday].”

Liverpool face a hectic April, with the home match against the Blades the first of eight fixtures in the space of 24 days this month, so Klopp will need as many players as possible at his disposal to negotiate that crunch period.

Jones had been in flying form before his ankle injury, with five goals in the opening weeks of 2024 prior to that setback (Transfermarkt), and his return could enable some welcome midfield rotation from the Reds manager in forthcoming fixtures.

We still have the likes of Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker to come back in as well, so just imagine how strong a squad we’ll have when all of those return (on the basis that nobody else is added to the casualty list in the meantime).

Even if the Toxteth lad isn’t quite in contention to start against Sheffield United, having him back among the substitutes would provide Liverpool with a nice boost to supplement Klopp’s options off the bench.

Firstly, on Andy Robertson: “Robbo, we take it a little bit day by day so we will see. He will not train today but it’s not as bad. So that’s fine.”

On the rest of the squad: “Curtis, I am not sure if he is available [for Sunday], but in training.

“Ibou was an extra rest day [on Thursday], nothing else. [Nunez] is fine. He did his rehab during the week, trained the first day partially since we are back partially and since then he is in full training.”

On Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota, the German added: “And the other boys, from next week on step by step I think they will join parts of team training and then team training, so we will see what we do with that.

“They are not too far away but not in yet, none of them was yet even close to team training. But they all make their steps and so it’s positive.”

Liverpool could be in line for an injury boost ahead of their return to Premier League action against Brighton on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp still has concerns over a number of players from before the international break, with Andy Robertson’s body blow for Scotland on Tuesday adding to the pile.

However, as reported by the Liverpool Echo in their synopsis of the various injuries, Curtis Jones ‘is close to a return to team training and could be considered’ for the matchday squad to take on the Seagulls this coming weekend.

Liverpool have had to do without the 6 foot 1 midfielder since he incurred an ankle injury in the 4-1 win at Brentford in mid-February, an untimely blow for a player who’d scored five goals in the opening weeks of 2024 before that setback (Transfermarkt).

If Jones is yet to resume team training, it’s unlikely that he’d start on Sunday, but it’d still be most welcome if he were even able to be included in the matchday squad for the Brighton clash.

The Reds are facing into nine matches in 28 days starting from this weekend, so Klopp will need every member of his squad to step up at some point during that relentless run, especially with minimal margin for error in the Premier League title race.

The manager will inevitably be asked for injury updates on numerous players at his press conference on Friday, so we should get a clearer idea then as to whether or not the 23-year-old will be able to play any part against the Seagulls.

Even if that fixture comes too soon for him, it certainly looks as if his return to the fold isn’t far away, which’ll delight the boss and indeed every Liverpool fan.

Curtis Jones is hoping to ‘step up his road to a comeback in the coming weeks’ after suffering a serious injury.

The Englishman is unlikely to make it back in the first-team as early as teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold (potentially Brighton).

There was some good news for the Scouse Academy graduate who was spotted at L4 at the weekend with a knee brace but critically ‘without aid’.

“Curtis Jones, Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Ryan Gravenberch and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all missed the last few weeks of action with setbacks but are all confident they have a role to play in the title race,” Lewis Steele reported for Daily Mail“Jones was wearing a knee brace but was spotted at Anfield walking without aid on Sunday with the midfielder said to be going well in his recovery and will hope he can step up his road to a comeback in the coming weeks.”

The Merseysiders are set to next take on Sparta Prague in the second leg of their Round of 16 Europa League clash.

It appears we can safely rule out a return in March for our No.17.

It’s remarkable, given how integral Jones was to the balance of this Liverpool midfield and outfit this term, just how well we’ve functioned in the 23-year-old’s absence.

That said, we’re immensely looking forward to Jones’ potential return after the international break.

To have the likes of the midfielder, Trent, Alisson and Co. back for a title run-in is particularly exciting.

Paul Merson beleives Chelsea have a huge advantage over Liverpool ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final at Wembley due to the fact Curtis Jones has been ruled out of the game with a sprained ankle.

The Scouser missed Wednesday night’s victory over Luton after picking up the injury against Brentford at the weekend and Pep Lijnders has confirmed the Scouser may not return to action until next month’s international break.

The Academy graduate has been in superb form for the Reds this season – nailing down a regular starting spot in midfield with his impressive offensive ability while also making significant improvements to the defensive side of his game.

Our No.17 has registered five goals and three assists so far this term (across all competitions) and Merson believes his absence on Sunday will be felt by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“I’m more confident for Chelsea’s chances than I was after the Liverpool game when they lost 4-1 at Anfield in January,” Merson told Sky Sports (via Metro).

“It all depends on who is fit for Liverpool – if Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones are fit, it is a different story. If they aren’t fit, I think it is a heads-or-tails football match.

READ MORE: Former Bayern boss has just told Xabi Alonso why he should opt for Liverpool switch over Munich

“If they are fit, especially Salah, and Curtis Jones – he is playing well and brings out the best in Alexis Mac Allister because he has the legs in the team – that would just swing it Liverpool’s way.

“But if they don’t play, it is a funny old game, football. Three or four weeks ago, you are thinking Chelsea don’t have much chance after being blown away at Anfield.

“Now all of a sudden, Chelsea are playing half-decent at the right time. Second half at Palace, they did well and at Man City the other day. For me, they are just playing well at the right time and I think they have a good balance.

“If Curtis Jones isn’t fit, then I think Chelsea win that midfield battle.”

In his press conference earlier today Lijnders confirmed it’s a race against time regarding the fitness of Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez ahead of Sunday’s final.

The pair were absent from the squad for our defeat of Luton but there’s hope that that decision was purely precautionary with our trip to the capital approaching.

Jones, who was labelled as a ‘fantastic’ player by Jordan Henderson previously (via Metro), brings a lot of energy to our midfield and there’s no doubt that before his injury he was enjoying his most successful run in the side since he made his debut for the club back in 2019.

With Dominik Szoboszlai also unlikely to be fit for our clash with Chelsea it’s likely that our midfield trio will consist of Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

All three performed well against the Hatters earlier this week but against Mauricio Pochettino’s side at Wembley it’s going to be a completely different game.

Liverpool fans were eagerly awaiting Jurgen Klopp’s injury update ahead of our game with Luton and in three key first-team players, we received some worrying news.

“So, not available are obviously Ali, that’s a muscle injury where we don’t know exactly how long it takes but definitely not for the foreseeable time in coming back.

“Then we have Diogo with a knee issue and is ruled out. Curtis, bone/ligament issue, ruled out.

“Then we have the others where we will deal with it day by day.”

Not only do we then have Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones out for our next match at Anfield, the Carabao Cup final and beyond – there’s also some further unknown concerns for the squad.

It seems that this may be Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez, meaning a late fitness test to see if they can play in the Premier League and then at Wembley.

Liverpool have a vastly underrated player in their squad who ought to be receiving senior international recognition.

That’s the view of former Premier League striker Jay Bothroyd, who made the claim about Curtis Jones, believing the 23-year-old to be missing out on the credit that his performances deserve.

Speaking on the Optus Sport Football Podcast, the ex-Blackburn and QPR attacker said: “People sleep on Curtis Jones, he’s important to the way they play. He doesn’t get enough credit. He should be in the England squad, that’s how good he is.”

The performances of Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United have led to a clamour for him to get an England call-up ahead of Euro 2024, and if he’s being deemed worthy of such recognition, then Jones should also be in the frame if he’s available to Gareth Southgate.

The Liverpool midfielder was unfortunately forced out of the 4-1 win at Brentford on Saturday, although the Daily Mail’s Dominic King indicated that the 23-year-old shouldn’t be out of action for too long.

The Toxteth native has blossomed into a trusted operator for the Reds this season, featuring in all but one Premier League game for which he’s been available and enjoying a purple patch during the winter when he scored five goals in nine matches (Transfermarkt).

Jones’ passing statistics also highlight his importance to Jurgen Klopp’s side, with his success rate of 90.8% the highest of anyone to have started in the top flight for LFC during the current campaign (WhoScored).

The midfielder mightn’t get the appreciation he deserves on a wider scale, but any Liverpool fan would tell you that he’s been magnificent in recent months and a hugely valuable part of the league leaders’ line-up.

Journalist Dominic King has shared projected injury timelines for three Liverpool players ahead of this week’s fixtures against Luton and Chelsea.

The Reds’ 4-1 win at Brentford on Saturday was tempered by body blows which saw Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez all substituted before the start of the second half, on top of a casualty list which also includes the likes of Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai and Thiago Alcantara.

Speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, the reporter outlined how long the former trio will likely be ruled out of action, and it doesn’t make for a pleasant soundbyte for LFC fans.

King said: “I believe Jota is going to be out for two months, which could be huge. Nunez a couple of weeks, Jones maybe a week. That’s what I’m led to be the case.”

With Mo Salah also being ruled out of the Luton game on Wednesday night, it leaves Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo as Liverpool’s only remaining senior attackers, so we could see Harvey Elliott operating on the right of a front three against the Hatters.

The Colombia and Netherlands internationals will be heavily relied upon over the next few games with Jota and Nunez sidelined, and this is their time to step up just as the Portuguese forward did during the absence of our number 11 in recent weeks.

King’s update suggests that Jones might be touch-and-go for the Carabao Cup final next Sunday, although further clues are set to emerge during the week as to whether or not the 23-year-old will make it in time for the Wembley showpiece.

The injury pile-up has come at a hugely inopportune time for Liverpool, with eight more matches across four different competitions between now and 17 March.

Not for the first time this season, Jurgen Klopp will need to utilise every bit of squad depth available to him in order to navigate a hectic period with increasingly limited playing resources. Let’s pray that the casualty list clears some bit over the coming days and weeks.
