It was an afternoon to forget for Liverpool on Sunday as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield.

The result further dented our Premier League title hopes with us now sitting in third place – behind Arsenal on goal difference and two points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.

Despite missing a number of clear cut chances in the second half Jurgen Klopp’s side never really got going and Eberechi Eze’s early strike earned the visitors all three points on Merseyside.

Liverpool were miles off their opponents during the early stages of the game but it’s Ibou Konate who’s been singled out by Tim Sherwood for the role he played moments before Palace’s goal.

“It’s interesting to look at Konate, there, he just doesn’t move, he gets stuck there, he’s like Madame Tussauds, I just couldn’t believe it, it’s a bad position he’s picked up,” Sherwood said on Premier League Productions (via The Boot Room).

As on Thursday during our 3-0 defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League, not many Liverpool players were at their best against Palace.

There was a lack of intensity to our play, our decision making was poor and we simply weren’t clinical in front of goal.

No offence intended to Oliver Glasner’s side, but we can’t afford to be dropping points to a bottom half side if we’re wanting to win the title.

Konate wasn’t the only player to not cover himself in glory during the early stages as we were far too passive and allowed Palace too much time on the ball all over the park.

We need to improve again rapidly if we’re to have any chance of winning our second title under Klopp.

Liverpool against Manchester City is sure to be a game that will attract the attention of many around the world and one pundit has made a bold prediction about the match.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Tom Sherwood said: “I don’t see Liverpool winning the game tomorrow, I really don’t. I think the Man City midfield is far too strong for Liverpool’s at the moment…

“I don’t see [Liverpool] winning, I see Man City dominating the midfield areas.”

For a team with such a poor record at Anfield and considering that we’re currently sat top of the league, it’s a brazen statement from the former manager.

Time will tell if it proves true but Jurgen Klopp and our supporters will have very different ideas about how this crucial clash will play out.

Liverpool have had a lot of amazing players in our history but Tim Sherwood believes that when it comes to captains in the Premier League era, none are better than Jordan Henderson.

Speaking on No Tippy Tappy Football, the former Spurs boss selected his ultimate Anfield XI and said: “I’ve got Jordan Henderson in there, for me, he’s the greatest captain Liverpool’s had in the Premier League era.

“Better captain than Gerrard, you know why – because they won the Premier League.”

It’s testament to the respect that the 55-year-old has for our former skipper, that he views the Sunderland-born midfielder so highly but when most of our fans will see this – they’ll all be touting the name of Steven Gerrard.

Sami Hyypia and Virgil van Dijk will also want a mention but it’s an interesting viewpoint from the former Blackburn Rovers captain.

Tim Sherwood has explained one Liverpool ace in particular is an absolute ‘dream’ for any manager.

Virgil van Dijk led a youthful Liverpool side to their 10th League Cup trophy last night against Chelsea at Wembley with the Dutchman’s bullet header late in extra-time proving the difference between the two sides.

Injuries to Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai, to name a few, meant the Reds were far from full strength against Mauricio Pochetinno’s side but our No.4 and his teammates battled themselves to glory in the capital.

Former Premier League manager Sherwood has explained the Liverpool skipper ‘is a dream for any young kid’ and credited the 32-year-old’s leadership abilities.

“Virgil van Dijk is a dream for any young kid,” Shearwood said on the Kelly & Wrighty show (via The Boot Room). “He looks at it like I’m going to do my job and I’m going to look after you. I’m going to do the job for you it’s telling them boys push on, push on in there do what you’re good at don’t cover me up I can deal with it. Looks after them.

“You cannot be good as a young player if you haven’t got good teachers and the teacher not necessarily from the side line it has to come from within the team and I think Van Dijk is absolute manager’s dream.”

Alex Inglethorpe and the entire Academy staff deserve credit for their ability to continue spotting and producing top talents for Jurgen Klopp to use at senior level.

But when out on the pitch it’s van Dijk who’s in charge and he deserves the praise he’s received from Sherwood.

The XI that finished last night’s game was remarkable with the likes of Bobby Clark, James McConnell and Jarell Quansah doing themselves proud when called upon from the bench.

Our No.4 stepped up once again to head in the only goal of the game and there’s a reason why he was handed the armband when Jordan Henderson left in the summer.

He’s a role model both on and off the pitch and the youngsters at the club will only benefit from sharing a dressing room with the Netherlands international.

Wataru Endo has been a largely excellent acquisition for Liverpool since his arrival from Stuttgart last August, but it seems that the 31-year-old isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Former Tottenham and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood was analysing the Reds’ 4-1 weekend win at Brentford for Premier League Productions when he gave his two cents on Jurgen Klopp’s starting midfield, voicing a rather baffling criticism of the Japan captain.

The 55-year-old said: “Look at the back to front. They’re so quick, but I didn’t like their midfield, I really didn’t. I didn’t like [Alexis] Mac Allister in that position. I don’t like Endo. Their range of passing, hit it quickly because it never gives the defenders any respite.”

Of course it looks great to see players spraying quick, direct passes, but Liverpool already have plenty of those in their squad. Although they may be absent at the moment, the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara and Dominik Szoboszlai can unlock opposition defences in an instant.

Endo’s main remit in Klopp’s team is to be the dominant midfield enforcer that we were so badly missing last season, and he’s slotted into that role commendably, giving a magnificent performance against Brentford on Saturday.

As someone who’s managed in the Premier League, you’d think that Sherwood would have a greater appreciation of players like the 31-year-old who put in so much diligent work out of possession for the benefit of the team as a whole.

Just because the Japan captain doesn’t regularly produce moments to get fans off their seats doesn’t mean that he isn’t an invaluable contributor at Liverpool, who landed him for a bargain by paying just £16m for him at the start of the season.

We’re sure that if you ask Klopp or any of Endo’s teammates, they’d have no qualms whatsoever about his range of passing, considering the qualities that he brings to the side in a wider sense.

Sherwood’s comments might well have Reds fans facepalming in disbelief.

Tim Sherwood has revealed that, in a conversation with Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s former sporting director told him about the firm message he got from Diogo Jota upon the winger’s arrival at Anfield.

The Portugal forward joined from Wolves in a £41m deal in September 2020 (BBC Sport), when the front three of Mo Salah, Bobby Firmino and Sadio Mane seemed virtually unassailable in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI.

However, that didn’t deter the 27-year-old from joining the then-Premier League champions, a point he made quite clear to the man who oversaw his transfer from Molineux.

Speaking to Premier League Productions (21 January, 20:40) after Jota scored twice in Liverpool’s 4-0 win at Bournemouth on Sunday, Sherwood said: “In the absence of Mo Salah, they are all stepping up. Jota has been an unbelievable signing for them.

“I remember speaking to Michael Edwards, who was the sporting director there when he went to speak to Jota to bring him from Wolves. He was like saying to Michael, ‘I am not playing second fiddle to the three you have got up top’, which we know was Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah at the time.

“He wanted to score goals and wanted to be the main man. He is certainly turning into that now because he has been outstanding.”

It spoke volumes of Jota’s confidence that, when he joined Liverpool in 2020, he seemed so assured that he wasn’t going there to accept a backup role to Salah, Firmino and Mane.

The Egyptian is the only member of that trio who’s still at Anfield, although three other senior forwards have arrived in the meantime to ensure that competition for starting berths in the Reds’ attack remains fervent.

The Portugal winger did his case no harm by scoring 13 goals in his first season under Klopp, a tally which’d have easily been higher were it not for a three-month injury layoff (Transfermarkt), and that campaign was no fluke either.

Jota is now on 52 goals in 135 Liverpool games (Transfermarkt), and the manner in which he took his brace against Bournemouth yesterday told the world that he’s a natural born predator – so much so that Jamie Carragher posed the question as to whether the 27-year-old has been the club’s best finisher in the Premier League era.

The Reds’ number 20 will be heavily relied upon over the next month or so in the wake of this evening’s injury setback regarding Salah, but there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that the former Wolves man can rise to the challenge.

Tim Sherwood couldn’t praise Darwin Nunez enough after his goalscoring display against West Ham United at the weekend.

The Uruguayan international put the Merseysiders ahead in their battle with David Moyes’ men at Anfield with a goal of such great technical quality it arguably defies the pundit’s accusation of a lack of technical cleanliness.

“He is back to his best. Causing havoc up there for any defenders. I really like Liverpool and I think they are going to challenge for the Premier League title,” the former Spurs boss told Premier League Productions.

“He is a nuisance. I wouldn’t want to play against him. He is a pest. He runs you in-behind. He can take the ball. He is a good size and backs in.

“He isn’t technically very clean, but sometimes, that’s his biggest asset – I think he is a real threat. I think he is a huge asset to Liverpool now.”

The 24-year-old currently finds himself on six goal contributions (four goals and two assists) in seven games, across all competitions.

Darwin Nunez is one to watch this season

Whilst we’re in agreement that Nunez’s game is a little raw in parts, there’s a clear improvement in his overall contribution to the side which is worth mentioning.

Jurgen Klopp has already highlighted the defensive side of his output – a central consideration for the manager when looking at which forwards to grant regular minutes on the pitch.

With a goal contribution rate of one every 51.83 minutes on top of that, there’s not a doubt in our minds that the former Benfica striker will change many a mind across the league over his ability and importance to this Liverpool side over the course of the current campaign.

Keep a close eye on Nunez!

Tim Sherwood believe Liverpool do not currently have a squad capable of competing for the Premier League title this season and is expecting the Reds to complete the signing of Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich during the current transfer window.

The Dutchman is reportedly unhappy with the lack of game time he’s had since moving to the Allianz Arena last summer and Jurgen Klopp’s side are believed to be showing interest in the Netherlands international with senior figures from the Anfield club travelling to Germany recently to find out more about the 21-year-old

Liverpool have already signed three new midfielders this summer but more reinforcements are needed if the Merseysiders are to be real contenders for the title according to Sherwood.

“If you looked at their squad at the moment, can they be the champions of the Premier League again? Absolutely not,” he told Sky Sports News (via HITC). “But anything can happen in the next couple of weeks.

“I am sure Ryan Gravenberch will go in there, the midfield player from Bayern. Hasn’t played since he has been there.”

Although we’ve brought in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo you can’t help but feel that we still need another new face in the engine room.

We’ve seen five midfielders leave the club this summer, including our club captain Jordan Henderson and the experienced figures of Fabinho and James Milner.

Gravenberch was one of the hottest prospects in Europe when he was at Ajax and he was expected to take his game to the next level after joining the German champions.

Earning a spot in the starting XI has proved difficult for the midfielder, though, so he could be tempted by a move to Liverpool if we’re to table an offer.

He’d be able to join up with his compatriots Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo at Anfield and he could flourish under Klopp.

It’ll be interesting to see what further business we complete before the window slams shut at the end of the month.

Tim Sherwood was insistent that Tottenham had unfairly missed out on a penalty following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s push on Ryan Sessegnon in the first-half of action.

The England international had initiated light contact against the Tottenham star, gently nudging him out of the way in a bid to win back possession.

“It’s a push. For me that’s a push. Anywhere else on the pitch, that’s a penalty,” the 53-year-old told Optus Sport.

It was a point Michael Owen couldn’t quite bring himself to fully agree with, though he did note he wouldn’t have been in uproar had the decision gone against his old club.

“There’s no question there’s a little shove,” the ex-Red told the broadcaster. “Whether it’s enough to give a penalty… you’re right on the threshold in my opinion. As it is, it’s sort of 50-50 and Liverpool sort of get away with it.”

The pundits’ thoughts on the matter contrasted quite clearly to Gary Lineker’s perception of the event with the latter claiming that the Academy graduate had stayed within the legal limits of contact allowed.

It’s a moment that’s already fuelled intense debates on Twitter and inevitably inspired ‘was it a penalty?’ shouts online, though it seems ridiculous to be putting the incident under the microscope and comparing it to Joao Cancelo’s red card against Fulham.

There is contact from our right-back but it would be ridiculous to see such physicality punished on a regular basis going forward.

We have to be careful, of course, as another official on another day may view such an incident very differently but it would have been rather harsh to see a spot-kick awarded after Sessegnon made more than a meal out of the challenge.

Tim Sherwood has backed FSG to hold a frank conversation with Jurgen Klopp in the summer to discuss taking a new direction and potentially beginning the search for a successor.

The German manager has come under fire of late for Liverpool’s topsy-turvy form this term with the Reds currently finding themselves outside the top four places.

“I’m not sure Jurgen picks them up from where they are now and makes them challengers again, I really don’t,” the ex-Tottenham head coach told The Kelly and Wrighty Podcast (via the Express).

“History says he doesn’t do that. He’s very good and drives and takes the teams to where he thinks he can get the most out of them.

“I don’t think they’ll get rid of him, but there will be a conversation where both parties agree that Jurgen has taken them as far as he can and they go for a new challenge.

“That’s just my hunch when I look at him. I’m not suggesting they’ll sack him.”

The Anfield-based outfit had appeared to have turned a corner with back-to-back 1-0 wins over Manchester City and West Ham, though a defeat by the same scoreline to Nottingham Forest killed any momentum gathered.

We want to make expressly clear here at the Empire of the Kop that the idea there needs to be any serious talks about Klopp’s future – only a few months after the 55-year-old nearly guided us to a historic quadruple haul of silverware – is barmy beyond belief.

There are serious issues that have to be corrected within this squad, most arguably relating to a failure to sign a quality midfielder in the summer and address the growing lack of quality in that department.

Not to say there weren’t genuine attempts to resolve that issue in the summer window just gone as reported attempts for Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham were made.

Failed moves for all three, assuming Artur Petrosyan’s report is accurate, means that our recruitment team will have a great deal of work to do in 2023 but we’ve every faith in Julian Ward and Co. correcting matters when the time comes.

Virgil van Dijk was at fault for Brighton’s equaliser against Liverpool according to Tim Sherwood.

The Reds came from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 against Roberto De Zerbi’s side but the Seagulls equalised with less than ten minutes remaining at Anfield as Leandro Trossard netted a superb hat-trick.

The Belgian’s third goal was taken superbly well but former Spurs and Aston Villa boss Sherwood believes one of Jurgen Klopp’s star men should’ve done more to prevent the goal.

“If you watch him (Van Dijk) here (for Brighton’s third goal), he just lumbers into position and that’s a switch off in concentration there,” Sherwood told Premier League productions (as quoted by The Kop Times).

“It was very, very poor. Just get back into position and get your body shape correct. He just sticks his left leg out for the clearance and the ball goes underneath, it’s a poor error for someone of his quality.”

Van Dijk is just one of a number of Klopp’s squad that has struggled to reach the level that we all know they’re capable of.

Last term he appeared to be back to his best following the nasty knee injury he sustained back in 2020 but his start to the new season is a concern.

Before the ball fell to Trossard to net his third of the game, the ball did appear to go under our No. 4 in what should’ve been a pretty straightforward clearance.

The likes of Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson were all below par as well as the Netherlands skipper.

It was a huge blow to concede late on after the lads had put so much energy into a stunning comeback, but in all honesty, Brighton deserved a point at least.

They were exceptional in the first half and they could very well be this season’s surprise package.

Former Aston Villa and Spurs manager Tim Sherwood was blown away to hear that Virgil van Dijk is yet to lose a league game for Liverpool at Anfield and claimed that statistic is ‘incredible’.

The Dutchman has won 50 and drawn 9 of the 59 Premier League games at his home ground and netted the Reds’ last goal in their 6-0 thrashing of Leeds United yesterday.

“Do we think he was value for money now?” Sherwood sarcastically questioned Premier League Productions (via HITC).

“He doesn’t know what it’s like to lose. How can you not know what it’s like to lose on your home ground? It’s incredible not losing in 59 games. Amazing.

“The guy is just a Rolls-Royce. He just oozes confidence. I think when teammates look at someone like him, lining up in that tunnel coming out to play, it doesn’t matter who they play against.

“He knows he’s the boss. He’s the guvnor. It’s up to you lot to come with me.”

The £75m man has returned to his best form recently after suffering that horrific knee injury in the Merseyside derby back in 2020.

He plays the game at his own pace and the calmness he possesses is infectious – his fellow defenders appear to perform better when he’s in the side.

We’re not a one-man team, however, and the incredible statistic is very much a team effort.

The incredible players that van Dijk has around him deserve credit too but the ex-Southampton man is so vitally important to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Let’s hope for another huge performance from the 30-year-old at Wembley on Sunday as we look to pick up our first piece of silverware of the season against Chelsea.

Luis Diaz capped off a Liverpool comeback against Norwich City with the Reds’ third goal of the afternoon to ensure all three points went to the hosts at full-time.

Commentating on the tie at the tie, former Tottenham boss and Sky Sports pundit, Tim Sherwood, claimed that the Colombian had ‘been the best player on the pitch’.

The Merseysiders’ latest victory saw them go six points behind Manchester City in the Premier League table at the time of writing.

Tim Sherwood has claimed that whilst Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk was playing in Scotland with Celtic, ‘no one wanted’ to sign the central defender.

Since his move to Anfield back in 2018, our No. 4 has become largely recognised by many as the best defender in the world and has won both the Champions League and Premier League amongst other trophies during his time on Merseyside.

“We are looking at a guy here in Virgil van Dijk,” Sherwood told Premier League Productions (via HITC).

“He played at Celtic. No one wanted to take him.

“Everyone was having a look, myself included because he was playing in an environment that was non-competitive. You couldn’t really judge him.

“Then he goes to Southampton. Then you think, ‘oh, we might have missed the boat here. He might be too expensive for us now’. He was proving that he could play in the Premier League.

“And Liverpool have done their homework, spoke to Jurgen Klopp, he said ‘this is the man I want’. And he has come in there with the personality which he has got. That helps. He is very humble. I think he has done absolutely brilliant.”

With no disrespect intended to the Scottish Premiership, it’s hard to argue against what the former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss is saying.

When the 30-year-old moved to the Premier League in 2015 it really made people take note of the Dutchman and realise how good of a player he really is.

The signing of him, alongside the addition of Alisson Becker from Roma, took Jurgen Klopp’s side to the next level and they’re two key figures in the squad that have made us the force we are today.

When the Netherlands captain was out injured last season with that horrific knee injury, it was clear how much we missed his presence in the side.

We’ve kept the second most clean sheets this season with 10 and that is largely due to VVD being back in the side and returning to his best form.

Hopefully, he can continue to be the rock at the back during the second half of the season as we challenge for four trophies.

Former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has claimed that Tyler Morton is not yet ready to play in the No. 6 role for Liverpool on his own.

The 19-year-old has started the Reds’ last two games, including Sunday’s Premier League draw away to Tottenham, but was substituted in the 60th minute after picking up a yellow card early in the game.

‘With the young boy Morton, as the six, I think he is a decent player on the ball, but he’s not ready to play in there on his own,” Sherwood said (via the Metro).

‘To be the only protection, with Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and [Andy] Robertson just vacating them areas and playing as wingers really.

‘I think with [Jordan] Henderson, I can understand it, even without [Virgil] van Dijk. But you have to tweak it sometimes without Van Dijk.’

The style of play that Jurgen Klopp has adopted in recent seasons means that our full-backs constantly find themselves high up the pitch.

This, therefore, requires our midfielders to offer sufficient protection for our central defenders.

Fabinho is the main man for the No. 6 role – his strong tackling and excellent reading of the game allows our attacking players to do the business with confidence in our defensive players to blunt any counter-attacks from the opposition.

Morton started our EFL Cup game against Leicester at Anfield on Wednesday and although he showed glimpses of his ability, his inexperience showed at times as Brendan Rodgers’ men calved through our side at ease on numerous occasions.

The No. 80 did perform superbly against AC Milan at the San Siro at the beginning of December, though, so it’s clear that he has the ability, he just needs more game time and more experience to continue his impressive development.
