Steve Nicol has questioned one big decision from Jurgen Klopp in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds boss put his faith in Jarell Quansah to start ahead of Ibrahima Konate in defence, and while the 21-year-old had a decent game overall, unfortunately he was culpable for an error which led to Bruno Fernandes equalising from long range early in the second half.

Speaking on ESPN FC a few hours after the match, Nicol voiced his belief that the manager got it wrong with his choice of centre-back partner for Virgil van Dijk.

He pondered: “Why does he play Quansah today and not Konate? Why? I’ve come to the conclusion that he played Quansah today because I reckon he thinks Quansah is a better passer of the ball.

“That’s the only thing I can come up with, because in terms of experience, this is a big game, and I’d have thought he’d have gone for the experience. You’ve got enough players who are going to be on the ball that you make sure you don’t give anything away.”

This is very much one of those situations where it’s easy to be wise after the fact. Had Liverpool won and/or Quansah not made that costly mistake for Fernandes’ goal, there’d be no post-match questioning of Klopp’s team selection.

It’s fair to state that, if Konate was fit enough for the bench after his knock against Sheffield United last week, he could’ve been able to start, with his pace and big-game experience perhaps making him the safer option alongside Van Dijk.

When it comes to picking the Reds’ starting XI, though, the German has long since earned our trust. Even the best managers in the business can make decisions which appear foolish in hindsight, and the 21-year-old has largely been excellent since breaking into the first team earlier this season.

Jurgen Klopp has publicly backed Jarell Quansah to ‘learn from’ a costly error in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Sunday and urged him not to let social media trolls get to him.

An errant sideways pass from the 21-year-old gifted Bruno Fernandes the chance to equalise from long range early in the second half, and he reportedly modified his Instagram settings afterwards to restrict who can comment on his posts.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Speaking to the media after the match, the Reds boss said of the young defender (via The Mirror): “As a football player in the Premier League and playing for Liverpool, I have the bad news – it will not be the last mistake in his life, unfortunately.

“I thought he dealt extremely well with it, we dealt well with it. But when our idols in the past made these kinds of mistakes there was no social media so I hope he’s smart enough to switch that off.

“It’s not a great situation but there are bigger mistakes in football. Absolutely no blame or criticism, not at all, it just happened. He will learn from it and that’s the best thing that can happen.”

It’s a sad indictment of modern society that Quansah felt obligated to take action to try and block out the toxic negativity from some social media users over a genuine mistake.

He’s a young man who’s been excellent throughout his first season as a senior Liverpool player, and even the best footballers in the world have been culpable of horror moments. The unfortunate thing for him is that, when it happens to a defender, it’s likely to prove costlier than a striker missing a gilt-edged chance, for example.

Klopp is honest in recognising that errors come with the territory of playing at the highest level, where they’re likelier to be punished, as was the case yesterday. He’s also right to implore the 21-year-old to shut out any online abuse which was directed at him afterwards.

Quansah will learn from that incident and can hopefully put in another strong performance when he next plays for Liverpool. On the evidence of what he’s shown throughout the campaign, he seems to have the character and quality to swiftly put Sunday’s faux pas behind him.

John Achterberg and Jarell Quansah were among those to make their feelings known about one Liverpool player’s exploits on international duty this week.

Harvey Elliott helped himself to two goals as England’s under-21s thrashed their Azerbaijan counterparts 5-1 in the qualifiers for next year’s European Championship.

Following the 20-year-old’s brace in Baku, he took to Instagram with a few images of himself from the match, posting the succinct caption ‘x2’.

The Liverpool attacker unsurprisingly came in for plenty of praise in the comments on that post, with Reds goalkeeping coach Achterberg replying with ‘Top’ followed by clapping and two fire emojis, while Quansah commented with heart and fire emojis.

If Elliott can repeat the trick against Luxembourg on Tuesday night and continue to impress for his club in the run-in to the season, there might just be a seat on the plane to Euro 2024 with the England senior squad yet!

Liverpool twice threw away a winning position to lose 4-3 after extra time against Manchester United on Sunday, but one Reds player was lauded by Lee Dixon on commentary for ITV.

The first of three equalising goals throughout the game was scored by Alexis Mac Allister, and it owed much to brilliant play from Jarell Quansah in the build-up as he glided his way into the home side’s penalty area.

The former Arsenal defender was mesmerised by the 21-year-old during the rollercoaster cup tie at Old Trafford, saying (via ITV Sport): “He’s so good on the ball, isn’t he? Looks like he’s been there forever. Mind you playing alongside [Virgil] Van Dijk helps as well, I must say.

“He reads the game well as well. He’s got that knack of being able to sniff out danger.”

When you look at how comfortable and composed Quansah has been in this Liverpool team, it’s bonkers to think that he only made his first senior Reds appearance against Newcastle at the end of last August.

The 21-year-old has gone on to play 24 times and counting under Jurgen Klopp this season, being trusted to start against both Manchester clubs over the past week and also appearing in the Carabao Cup final last month (Transfermarkt).

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

His statistics from today sum up how classy he’s been at first-team level. As per Sofascore, he completed 94 passes out of 103 (91% success rate) – the most of anyone for the away side – along with winning five of his seven duels. Defensively he was outstanding, making six clearances and three tackles against United.

As Dixon says, playing alongside one of the world’s best in Van Dijk has undoubtedly stood to Quansah as he makes his way at Anfield, but the youngster’s composure and intelligence for a player who’s still quite inexperienced is nothing short of marvellous.

There are still two more trophies to be pursued this season, and the 21-year-old may well have a huge part to play if we’re to win either or both.

Does Ibrahima Konate get enough credit?

Given the quality Quansah sees from Matip and Van Dijk, it’s high praise to claim that our No.5’s defending technique is ‘special’ and unique.

With modern comparisons focussing on Arsenal’s William Saliba and our No.4, it seems that Konate can be a little left out at times.

In our mind, however, the former RB Leipzig man should absolutely be involved in those conversations.

As ever, it comes down to a matter of availability, with the centre-half pushed slightly too far in our prior meeting with Sparta in Prague.

If Konate continues to develop moving forward, however, we’ve got some player on our hands for the next decade.

Speaking with Sky Sports, the 56-year-old said: “I would like to know of all the people [who thought]: ‘Jarell Quansah, hmm, let’s see what Haaland is doing with him’ and what a game the boy played!”

The head-in-hands reaction of the German showed how proud he was of Jarell Quansah, who continues to raise his level to every test posed of him.

The best thing you can say about a young player is that you forget their age and inexperience, something which is certainly the case of the Warrington-born centre-back.

It’s been the season of ‘Klopp’s Kids’ and with so many of our academy players stepping up when needed, it’s no surprise that the manager is so keen to praise one in particular.

In the light of Ibou Konate’s possible injury, Jurgen Klopp was asked for his thoughts on whether Jarell Quansah could play against Manchester City and his progress: “Massive, massive development. Massive. He just stepped up. He came back and it wasn’t that everybody in the club was saying, ‘Yeah, he will be the next one.’

“We knew he is a real talent, we knew he has massive strength, especially on the ball, stuff like this. But how will he deal with the next-quality Premier League strikers?

“How is that physically, stuff like this? We wanted to give us the chance and him the time to show that, and we thought the situation in the squad is right to do so.

“If you want, centre-half No.5 in that moment. Joey [Gomez] was not immediately planned as a right or left-back back-up, because we had obviously Conor [Bradley], who then got injured, and we had the two left-backs.

QSo it was not necessary, so we thought that was a good situation to have a look. He showed immediately that he wants to be in the team in each session and it’s a joy, a pure joy, to have him.”

Injury to Joel Matip, versatility of Joe Gomez and full-back fitness issues have created the perfect storm for the 21-year-old to thrive this season.

You never know how and when your opportunity will crop up but you have to be ready for it and we can all agree that the Warrington-born defender has certainly done that.
