Liverpool may be hoping to exact a measure of revenge for their FA Cup defeat to Manchester United by beating them to the punch for a reported mutual transfer target.

In Christian Falk’s Fact Files for Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing, the journalist outlined that Donyell Malen is of interest to both clubs (as well as Arsenal), with the 25-year-old potentially being the subject of a proposed swap move which’d see him come to Old Trafford and Jadon Sancho rejoining Borussia Dortmund permanently.

That is supposedly ‘plan B’, with the Bundesliga club eager to discuss another possible loan move for the England international, who’s currently back at Signal Iduna Park on a temporary basis.

Falk wrote: “Jadon Sancho is getting better and better. Most recently he scored against Bremen and Eindhoven. The club looked up old data from the archives to compare Sancho’s stats from his first time at Dortmund. His training plan will then be adjusted.

“Sports director Sebastian Kehl is very happy with Sancho. That’s why he wants to talk to Manchester United in May. The goal: another loan.

“But there is also a plan B: Donyell Malen is currently playing in his best form since he joined Dortmund. Manchester United are interested in him. Dortmund would give him away. A swap deal would be possible. Good for Dortmund: Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC are also interested in the Dutchman.”

Malen has emerged as a possible summer transfer target for Liverpool in recent days, with Sky Germany reporter Patrick Berger claiming that the winger ‘wants to leave Dortmund’ and is ‘expected’ to move on during the off-season.

If the Bundesliga club simply negotiate another loan deal for Sancho, one which doesn’t entail a potential swap involving the Dutch winger, that could make it theoretically easier for the Reds to land the 25-year-old than if United were to sign him in exchange for the Englishman.

As Falk outlined, Malen has been enjoying a hot streak of late, with four goals in his last four league games (Transfermarkt), so it’s little wonder that he’s been attracting interest from some of the Premier League’s big hitters.

It remains to be seen just what positions and which players will take priority in the summer shopping list of Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes, with the identity of the new manager set to shape the plan of attack for the transfer window.

Nonetheless, if the Reds were to beat United to the punch for the Dortmund and Netherlands winger, it’d no doubt bring a wry smile to Merseyside faces.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in a Bundesliga attacker who’s already well known to three members of Jurgen Klopp’s current squad.

According to Sky Germany reporter Patrick Berger, the Reds have eyes on Borussia Dortmund winger Donyell Malen, who carries a price tag of €40m-€50m (£34m-£43m) and is believed to be seeking a move away from Signal Iduna Park.

On Monday evening, the journalist posted on X“Donyell Malen (25) still wants to leave Dortmund. Summer departure expected, as @BVB is open to selling the attacker (13 goals, 5 assists). Price tag: €40-50m all in. Arsenal and Liverpool are interested. Manchester United is not a hot topic at the moment. w/@Plettigoal”.

Malen has 28 senior caps for Netherlands and has played alongside Liverpool trio Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch at international level (Transfermarkt).

Predominantly playing on the right flank at Dortmund, the 25-year-old has 13 goals and five assists in 33 games across all competitions this season, netting four times in his last four Bundesliga appearances (Transfermarkt).

Described as stylistically similar to Mo Salah and Diogo Jota by FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of wingers/attacking midfielders in Europe’s five main leagues for non-penalty goals per 90 minutes over the past year, and he’s also in the top 2% for shots per game in the same timeframe.

A fee in the £35m-£45m bracket doesn’t seem extortionate for a prolific attacker who’s at an age where he should be coming into his prime, and he could viably be the Egyptian’s long-term successor on the right flank at Liverpool if he comes to Anfield.

Malen’s apparent desire to leave Dortmund could also work in the Reds’ favour, so it’ll be interesting to see if Michael Edwards places him high on the summer transfer wish list this year.

Donyell Malen could be one to watch when it comes to January window ongoings, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The well-trusted transfer insider revealed that the Borussia Dortmund wide man (linked to the Reds by the Daily Express) is keen to ‘try something different’.

“I would still keep an eye on Malen until the end of the January window,” the Guardian journalist spoke on streaming platform Kick.

“Nothing is concrete now, nothing is advanced, but in case an opportunity appears, I think Donyell Malen could leave Borussia Dortmund in January.

“If not in January I still see him leaving in the summer transfer window because, probably, from what I am hearing, the player wants to try something different.”

It coincides with the arrival of Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho, returning for his second spell at the Bundesliga club.

Could Liverpool look to take advantage?

Whilst Malen is soon to be on the border of inacceptability when it comes to the age profile our recruitment team is willing to target, he could be a left-of-field option to bolster the forward line in January.

The 24-year-old (25 on January 19) is in the same percentile (99th) for non-penalty xG as his likely tutor, Mo Salah, despite taking a higher volume of shots, according to FBref.

His ability to effectively carry the ball (77th percentile) and take on a man (86th percentile for successful take-ons) would surely also raise a few eyebrows in the data department.

One to keep an eye, if not quite appearing to be the leading target to fill our No.11’s shoes in the long-term at the moment.

Talk of Maximilian Beier being a potential Liverpool target may have some fans training one eye on the summer window.

One other option the Merseysiders could pursue as a long-term successor on the right flank may be Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen.

Christian Falk reports that the Wieringen-born forward’s new agents have been engaged in ‘talks’ with the club over a potential exit.

“Talks were had between Donyell Malen’s representatives and Dortmund over his future since he changed agents and the club isn’t confident in Malen,” the BILD reporter wrote in his exclusive column with CaughtOffside “He can leave the club for €30m, so if there is interest from the Premier League, they would talk with any interested club. He’s up for sale in January.”

Available for a paltry £25.7m, it’s a rather cheap solution we could explore to solve a long-term problem.

Would Malen be an ideal long-term replacement for Salah?

As far as we’re concerned, we’d be happy to have Mo Salah remain at Anfield for as long as his body is capable of handling the demands of Premier League football.

Judging by the latest evidence on offer, it would appear more than likely that this will remain the case for the foreseeable future.

That said, there’s no reason why the club can’t future-proof in the meantime.

Are Donyell Malen’s days at Dortmund numbered? – (Photo by Leon Kuegeler/Getty Images)

Statistically, it’s interesting that the Egyptian King is listed as the eighth-most similar player to Donyell Malen, according to FBref.

That may be explained in part by the 24-year-old’s remarkable combined xG and xAG which puts him in the 97th percentile of footballers in Europe’s top five leagues.

It’s a figure that may significantly improve too with better service, given the Dortmund forward receives far fewer progressive passes (8.29) per 90 than his Liverpool counterpart (11.66).

The number of Liverpool fans prepared to sanction Mo Salah’s exit next summer may be dwindling amid another terrific season from the Egyptian.

Should the club opt to part ways with their talismanic No.11 in the interests of capitalising on his value, one potential avenue they could go down to replace him has freshly opened.

Florian Plettenberg relays an update from Patrik Berger on X (formerly Twitter) that Donyell Malen (24) is now ‘open for a new challenge in winter or summer’.

It could hand Liverpool’s recruitment team an interesting avenue, particularly with the player having been previously admired by Jurgen Klopp (dailysports).

A fresh start in England?

Despite a promising start to the 2023/24 Bundesliga season – in which he found the net in three out of his four opening league games – minutes have since been hard to come by.

At a potential price tag ranging between £25.7m-£30m, Malen could represent an extremely high reward married with a low-risk buy.

Of course, this isn’t an area we’d wish to see Liverpool gamble with either way given the calibre of player who could be heading out of the door next summer.

In that sense, it’s reassuring to see that the Dortmund attacker’s underlying stats suggest he’s currently one of the most exciting wide men in Europe, registering in the 99th percentile non-penalty goals and xG, according to FBref.

Following a significant stint away from English football, after he departed Arsenal’s academy, perhaps it’s high time he made a return.

Christian Falk isn’t surprised to find Donyell Malen on Liverpool’s shortlist ahead of the January transfer window amid the club’s intensive scouting of the Bundesliga.

One might reasonably imagine that the Merseysiders won’t be prioritising the forward line come the halfway point in the campaign, however, given the need to bolster the backline and perhaps add a young holding midfielder to the squad far more pressing.

“I’m not surprised Donyell Malen is on Liverpool’s list, he’s doing very well at the moment in Dortmund. If somebody’s scoring, it’s usually him; he’s having his best season for Dortmund at the moment,” the BILD reporter exclusively informed CaughtOffside. “I heard Liverpool are intensively scouting in the Bundesliga because of their sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, of course!”

That said, with Mo Salah’s future still up in the air amid strong Saudi interest, it’s a name fans may wish to keep an eye on should both club and player opt to call time on the Egyptian’s illustrious Anfield career.

It feels utterly insane to even suggest that as a possibility in light of the 31-year-old’s bona fide status as a modern Liverpool great.

Cutting emotion out of the mix, however, which is far from being a simple task, and the reality remains that we can’t ascertain for just how long our Egyptian King can keep up his levels beyond the tender age of 32.

Do we then look to cash in for the megabucks with a year left on his contract? Presume that the money will still be there in 2025 and try and extend Salah’s contract by a year or two?

As Liverpool fans, we’d love nothing more than to see him play football at our club until his legs go, but that’s not a call that will appeal massively to the business bigwigs behind the scenes – and rightly so for a sustainably-run side.

The report does go on to suggest that we’ll have to fork out over £51.9m if we’re to make BVB ‘flinch’ – a far from unexpected cost given Dortmund’s reputation when it comes to selling top attackers!

Whilst we understand that the sale of a minority stake – worth between £82m-164m – won’t see Klopp’s transfer kitty enhanced, it’s hard to imagine it not having an overall positive impact on club finances to the point of at least partially impacting our transfer business down the line.

Given the level of business we’ll likely have to engage in once more over the coming windows, with there still arguably needing to be boxes ticked for the holding midfield role, not to mention the backline, it couldn’t hurt for us to have a similar level of backing as what was experienced the summer just gone.

If finances do align, it wouldn’t be unwise to bring in cover for our Egyptian King if this is indeed his final year on Merseyside.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Dortmund could have faced more serious competition from Liverpool for Donyell Malen’s signature (who registered 19 league goals last term) had the Reds managed to offload Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi more quickly.

The former has since publicly stated his intention to part ways with the Anfield-based outfit, with the latter likewise linked with a switch away from the club.

“AC Milan followed him [Malen] between October and December of last year but without ever making an offer to PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool only thought about it in case they sold Shaqiri and Origi faster,” the Sky Sports journalist told BenchWarmers“Dortmund, on the other hand, after selling Sancho closed the deal.”

Having passed the halfway mark for the reported target of £60m in player sales, it’s possible that Jurgen Klopp’s men could soon look to bolster the squad with their second summer signing.

READ MORE: Lijnders says Liverpool star ‘could be the lead singer in a boy band’ after karaoke session

Considering that we’re over our non-homegrown quota, a further signing could be hugely dependent on us first offloading players within that category (including the likes of Loris Karius and co.).

The likes of Saul Niguez and Renato Sanches have both been linked with a move to Merseyside, though we’ve yet to act on our reported interest.

Though our financial limitations have been made expressly clear, should we manage to reach our desired target in player sales, we cannot afford to avoid investing in a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum at the very least, despite the need for extra competition in the forward line.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Borussia Dortmund are close to reaching an agreement with PSV for Liverpool-linked striker Donyell Malen.

The Reds were thought to be locked in a two-horse race for the highly-rated Netherlands international though have fallen short in this particular transfer battle.

The hunt for a new forward will likely continue for Jurgen Klopp’s men, with The Athletic having recently noted the Premier League outfit’s interest in West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen.

Malen, Romano, Liverpool
Scoring 19 league goals in the Eredivisie last term, the Dutchman had attracted international attention with his performances at a domestic level.

It’s a blow to have ultimately lost out on the centre-forward, though far from being the end of the world.

Knowing our recruitment team – and as has already been demonstrated by the link with Bowen – Liverpool’s list of potential targets will be long and it wouldn’t be entirely unsurprising to see us identify a relatively unknown name in Europe or beyond as a suitable option.

Realistically, we need a forward with a clear eye for goal who can challenge our current three starters but who is young enough to accept the need to fight for a place, for now.

Dortmund could be put off in their pursuit of PSV hitman Donyell Malen after uncovering agent Mino Raiola’s requested fee for arranging the potential transfer.

This comes from Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (via the Mirror), with the publication claiming that the Italy-born Dutchman would need a payment of £7.8m included as part of a deal taking the Dutchman to Germany.

It could theoretically buy time for Liverpool to make a move, with the Reds said to be reliant this summer on player sales to lead to further incomings beyond Ibrahima Konate.

Having said that, it seems rather unlikely, given our own financial constraints, that we’ll be prepared to fork out an extra £7m just to appease the super agent.

Given the shrewdness of our recent business, it’s a stipulation that would hand far more control to Raiola than Michael Edwards and the recruitment team would potentially be prepared to concede in negotiations.

It’s a player we could see Liverpool being very much interested in, but without further player sales – which appears to have become the unwanted theme of our summer transfer window – we’re unlikely to throw money at the problem anytime soon.

The transfer of Liverpool-linked Donyell Malen to Borussia Dortmund is becoming increasingly likely, with the latter keen to get the signing over the line.

This comes from reliable PSV insider (Eindhovens Dagblad journalist) Rik Elfrink, who reports that discussions are taking place between the Bundesliga outfit and Roger Schmidt’s side with a view to arranging a deal.

“In the coming days, PSV and the German top club will try to find each other on all fronts and only then can Malen undergo a medical examination,” the Eindhovens Dagblad journalist wrote for the publication.

“Dortmund would like to bring him in quickly to start preparing for the new season with Malen.

“If it is not yet possible to conclude a definitive deal, Malen may have to start again on Thursday in Eindhoven.”

With the Reds’ current backup options in the offensive department proving somewhat lacklustre, it is thought that the club is interested in pursuing a new forward in addition to a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum.

At 22-years-old, not to mention being already a potent goalscorer with 19 goals in 32 Eredivisie appearances this term, the Dutchman seemed an ideal fit to replace either one of Xherdan Shaqiri or Divock Origi.

As things currently stand, however, the player seems one that will likely get away from us, with Dortmund very much leading the way in negotiations.

Given the German side’s sudden influx of cash, courtesy of the sale of Jadon Sancho, the step-up in talks is more than understandable in comparison to our own situation, in which we are thought to be reliant on player sales to continue moving for incomings.

Liverpool have reportedly offered to include midfielder Marko Grujic in a swap deal for Donyell Malen.

That’s according to reputable Portuguese outlet O Jogo, who claim the Reds are trying to tempt PSV into allowing their hot-shot forward to join them over Borussia Dortmund.

After four loan deals and just eight Premier League appearances in five years at Liverpool, the writing does appear to be on the wall for Grujic.

The 25-year-old has recently been linked with a move to Italian side Sassuolo, with the Reds said to have already informed the player he will be sold this summer.

Malen has been subject of interest from several clubs for a short while, including Liverpool – and we at Empire of the Kop previously revealed it’s now a two-way battle between the Reds and Borussia Dortmund for the PSV hot-shot.

The 22-year-old striker has bagged an outstanding 40 goals in 81 league appearances for the Eredivisie side, earning himself a call-up to the Netherlands national team in 2019.

James Pearce has confirmed that Donyell Malen is a player that Liverpool “have watched”.

The Reds are thought to be keeping an eye out for a new forward to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options.

“He’s certainly a player that has got his admirers at Liverpool. They have watched him closely,” The Athletic journalist told The1892RedsPodcast.

“Certainly at the moment, it hasn’t gone any further than initial enquiries just to check on his situation.

“Certainly at the top end of the field a lot depends on what happens in terms of the exits because at the moment what do you do? You can’t just stockpile players.

“To me, the most obvious thing would be to offload [Divock] Origi and bring in someone like Malen who would be an upgrade and give you that extra injection of quality backup to [Bobby] Firmino – someone who can challenge him for that starting spot.”

Following a disappointing season for the likes of Bobby Firmino and Sadio Mane last term – at least in comparison to the dizzying heights of prior campaigns – the need for a higher quality standard of backup has been highlighted.

The purchase of Diogo Jota last summer surprised many close to the club, though it did prove to be another shrewd move, with the Portuguese excelling in a red shirt prior to his injury.

The return of on-loan star Harvey Elliott will likewise offer Klopp another potentially exciting alternative to his prestigious front-three next term, though that still leaves a spot spare.

Realistically, we’d imagine that both Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi will be sold this summer – depending on whether potential suitors are willing to meet our valuation, as Pearce has noted – which would free up the funds to pursue a new attacker of Malen’s quality.

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly hesitating in their pursuit of Liverpool-linked Donyell Malen following the release of Mino Raiola’s reported demands.

According to Bild (via Sport Witness), the agent has requested that his client’s wages (apparently amounting to €2m per season currently) be tripled, with PSV’s asking price also giving the Bundesliga outfit pause.

With the Eredivise side said to be asking for a fee in the region of €30 million, according to an Empire of the Kop source, there’s a real possibility that Jurgen Klopp’s men could capitalise on their European rivals’ hesitation.

Assuming that we are at least likely to raise £60m in player sales, which will go towards our transfer kitty, a fee amounting to potentially half that target to secure the services of the Dutch international seems far from excessive.

With Liverpool able to offer more lucrative wage packets, we shouldn’t imagine that Raiola’s demands will be entirely out of reach either, especially not after Michael Edwards and the recruitment team work their magic.

At 22-years-old, the player’s profile certainly appears to fit nicely with the kind of target we’d imagine the club going for, with the forward potentially likely to accept a backup option role with a view to competing for a first-XI spot.

Liverpool are in contact with Malen’s agent, Mino Raiola, and are hoping to find an agreement.

It’s now said to be a race between the Reds and Dortmund to strike a deal with the player’s representative, before speaking with PSV.

The Netherlands outfit will ask for around €30 million (£27m) to sell Malen – which seems like a huge bargain to us.

Previously plying his trade for Arsenal at youth level, the 22-year-old is now an accomplished forward in the Eredivisie.

Malen has bagged an outstanding 40 goals in 81 league appearances for PSV, earning himself a call-up to the Netherlands national team in 2019.
