Alan Pardew has recalled how Liverpool’s £35m acquisition of Andy Carroll in 2011 created a ‘massive problem’ for the Newcastle side that he managed at the time.

It was 13 years ago this month that the Reds made the striker their then club-record signing from St James’ Park (BBC Sport), arriving at Anfield on the same transfer deadline day which saw Luis Suarez secured from Ajax and Fernando Torres leave for Chelsea.

Speaking on The January Transfer Window Show for talkSPORT, the then-Magpies boss recounted how, as he boarded a flight from London, he initially told Derek Llambias (the club’s managing director at the time) that £30m wasn’t enough for the forward.

However, Pardew was still taken aback when Liverpool raised their offer to what they eventually paid for Carroll, saying: “I got on the phone to Derek and said ‘I think if you get £35m maybe there’s a discussion’, thinking there’s no way [then-LFC manager] Kenny Dalglish is going to spend £35m on Andy Carroll.

“I went to training, popped around, it was all enjoyable and lovely. Then there was the bid for £35m and we were all stunned. It was the British transfer record at the time and it was a massive problem for us. It left us really short.”

Carroll never quite lived up to his price tag at Liverpool, with his time at Anfield ending with just 11 goals in 58 appearances (Transfermarkt).

It’s a sign of the times that, a mere 13 years ago, £35m was viewed as a seismic transfer sum for a 22-year-old English striker who’d scored 11 goals in 19 Premier League games during the prior half-season for Newcastle (BBC Sport) – just think of what such a player would cost this month!

You can view Pardew’s comments on the Carroll transfer below (from 20:31), via talkSPORT on YouTube:

Liverpool may have been handed a glorious opportunity to sign a long-standing transfer target by the player himself.

O Jogo reported of Newcastle’s attempts to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande by flying to the Portuguese capital, and the article made reference to a similar approach for his centre-back partner Goncalo Inacio this time last year.

However, the Portugal international turned down a possible move to St James’ Park as he preferred to hold out for a club who’d challenge for major silverware, having been made aware of ‘growing interest’ from the Reds, among other prospective suitors.

With Liverpool also being linked with Diomande recently, Reds chiefs must be wary of not allowing Newcastle a clear advantage in the chase for the Ivory Coast defender.

However, with Inacio snubbing the Magpies in apparent favour of a move to somewhere like Anfield, that could provide an open invitation to swoop for the 22-year-old.

The Portuguese centre-back can boast a glowing endorsement from journalist Steve Kay, who described him as an ‘elite’ operator with an ‘excellent passing range’ when speaking to the EOTK Insider show in September.

He has a release clause of £52m in his contract (TEAMtalk), which isn’t outrageously prohibitive for a player of his age who’s one of the best defenders in Europe in possession.

As per FBref, Inacio ranks among the top 6% of positional peers on the continent in terms of his match averages for passes attempted (88.82), progressive passes (8.71), progressive carries (1.84) and successful take-ons (0.62).

Those are qualities that Jurgen Klopp would surely love to add to the already impressive selection of centre-backs at his disposal, and the player himself seems to have issued a ‘come-and-get-me’ plea of sorts to Liverpool.

There’s certainly an opportunity there for the Reds to land one of Europe’s most coveted defenders – can they duly seize it?

One Sporting Lisbon legend would rather see the club’s prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres sign for Liverpool than another Premier League suitor.

The Reds and Newcastle both sent scouts to the Estadio Jose Alvalade last weekend to watch the Sweden international provide a hat-trick of assists in a 5-1 thrashing of Estoril, with the 25-year-old boasting a €52m (£45m) release clause at the Primeira Liga leaders (HITC).

Manuel Fernandes, an icon of Sporting who sits second in their all-time scoring list, spoke to A Bola about the former Brighton attacker, who he dubbed a ‘complete’ player.

The 72-year-old said of Gyokeres: “I honestly hope he doesn’t leave Sporting, at least before the end of the season. I think it’s difficult for any club to beat the clause in this winter market. If you have to leave, let it be to a big club, like Liverpool or Bayern Munich.

“For example, Liverpool have players there who are not half as good as Gyokeres. I see him, for example, at the level of Bayern Munich, but for now, let him stay. It is clear that he feels good at Sporting. He is a very serious and focused player.”

It’s no wonder the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle are watching Gyokeres with such intent, with the Swedish marksman hitting 20 goals in 23 appearances for Sporting so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Even if he didn’t find the net when the Reds watched him against Estoril, he still impressed with three assists, seven successful duels and six key passes (Sofascore), proving a real handful for the visitors to contain.

It speaks to our reputation as a club that an impartial observer in Fernandes would rather see the 25-year-old move to Anfield than St James’ Park, even if the Sporting legend is being harsh on our current squad with his remark that some LFC players aren’t ‘half as good’ as the Swede.

Gyokeres is already accustomed to the rigours of the English game from his time with Brighton, Swansea and Coventry, so he probably wouldn’t require any great bedding-in period if he were to join Liverpool this year.

Even with Mo Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations, the Reds probably won’t splash out on a forward in the January transfer window. However, if the Sweden striker were to keep scoring at his current rate, he’ll become increasingly impossible to ignore.

Let’s see if, further down the line, Anfield chiefs grant Fernandes his wish of making Merseyside the 25-year-old’s future home.

Liverpool could stand to gain from one of their Premier League rivals clinching a potential £40m move for a red-hot attacker, according to reports.

As per The Telegraph, Newcastle have submitted an enquiry to Bournemouth for former Reds striker Dominic Solanke, for whom West Ham had an offer of the aforementioned amount rejected last summer (The Mirror).

This Is Anfield noted that the 27-year-old’s contract includes a 20% sell-on clause, which entitles the Merseyside club to a fifth of any profit made on his subsequent sale.

If the Cherries were to sell the England international to Eddie Howe’s side for £40m, Liverpool would duly be entitled to £3.2m of the £16m surplus that the south coast outfit would generate, so they may privately be hoping that the Magpies can snap him up for that figure.

Solanke’s stock has never been higher, having won the Premier League Player of the Month award for December, during which he scored six of his dozen goals in the top flight so far this term, including a hat-trick away to Nottingham Forest (Transfermarkt).

However, if Liverpool chiefs are rubbing their hands together in giddy anticipation over a seven-figure windfall from a potential move to Newcastle this month, they could be in for disappointment.

Howe has openly stated that Financial Fair Play restrictions have prevented the Magpies from dipping into the January market and will preclude them from snapping up the Bournemouth hotshot, despite the 46-year-old straight-up admitting that he’d love to bring in the striker from his former club (Sky Sports).

We can probably forget about a top-up to the Anfield coffers this month from Solanke being sold, but if he continues his stunning form for the Cherries throughout the rest of the season and then gets a big-money move, both his current club and his previous one could be in line for a significant payday come the summer.

Luis Diaz produced a moment of magic on Monday night as Liverpool got their 2024 off to a winning start against Newcastle at Anfield.

During the second half of the 4-2 thriller, the Colombian got on the end of a pinpoint diagonal pass from Wataru Endo and attempted to get away from Tino Livramento, who initially forced the 26-year-old towards the touchline.

Miguel Almiron then came in to close down the Reds’ number 7, but just when the Magpies duo thought they had Diaz cornered, he spun away from them with an outrageous flick, leaving his opponents eating his dust before he put in a cross which came to no avail.

Even the travelling Newcastle fans who had a close-up view of that sumptuous moment – which can be seen in all its glory in the latest instalment of Inside Anfield on Liverpool’s YouTube channel – would nearly have to applaud its audacity!

‘Liverpool, Liverpool, top of the league’ may have been a phrase lingering in the minds of many a Reds fan as Jurgen Klopp’s outfit crested the wave of 2023 at the top of the pile.

With Manchester City sure to improve in the remaining half of the campaign, however, one can be sure that any of a red persuasion should not be celebrating early.

The impending meeting with Newcastle, even despite the relatively poor recent fortunes experienced by the Magpies, represents an interesting marker of intent for the hosts.

Team news vs Newcastle

Alisson Becker is the man between the sticks on New Year’s Day and is shielded by a centre-back partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Wataru Endo sits in front of the backline ahead of his departure for the Asian Cup, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones also fielded in midfield.

Mo Salah is another expected departure (for the AFCON) and is given the nod alongside Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz in the front-three.

On the bench, Alexis Mac Allister makes his return to the squad.

It’s far from being the most wonderful time of the year as far as injuries are concerned for either one of Liverpool or Newcastle ahead of their meeting at Anfield.

Certainly not for the latter camp, with potentially as many as nine players set to be missing from the encounter tomorrow, according to Premier Injuries:

  • Sandro Tonali (suspension)
  • Nick Pope (shoulder)
  • Jacob Murphy (shoulder)
  • Harvey Barnes (ankle/foot)
  • Jamaal Lascelles (groin/hip/pelvic)
  • Joseph Willock (calf/shin/heel)
  • Elliott Anderson (lower back)
  • Javier Manquillo (groin/hip/pelvic)
  • Matt Targett (thigh)

Callum Wilson is an important returnee to the squad, having recovered from a hamstring issue back at the start of the month.

Near perfection required

Eddie Howe confessed his side would have to be ‘near perfect’ (RTE) to secure a favourable result against Jurgen Klopp’s in-form side.

In truth, one might suspect he’ll be taking a close look at Manchester United’s blueprint for an unlikely draw at Anfield, despite the hosts fielding 34 shots on the day.

A more ruthless performance on our account may, of course, prove too much for even the best-laid plans to handle.

We’ll be hoping for a big performance from Mo Salah in that regard ahead of his impending exit to participate in the AFCON in January.

Eddie Howe has appeared to rule Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles out of contention to feature against Liverpool on New Year’s Day.

The 30-year-old was forced off during the Magpies’ defeat to Luton last weekend and duly missed their 1-3 loss at home to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

Although the manager indicated that the £40,000-per-week defender’s injury wouldn’t be a long-term one, his post-match comments yesterday suggest that the player won’t return in time for next Monday’s trip to Anfield.

Howe said (via Newcastle World): “Of course, we’ve suffered the injuries we’ve had and those players you see aren’t available… I don’t think anyone is coming back in the next few days.”

Despite Newcastle being a Premier League rival, Jurgen Klopp will probably empathise with Howe’s plight, given the spate of injuries with which Liverpool have had to contend recently.

The Magpies have it even worse, with Lascelles one of eight players currently on the treatment table at St James’ Park, and that list includes long-term casualties such as Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy and Matt Targett (Premier Injuries).

The recent return of Sven Botman from a knee problem has eased the Geordies’ plight at centre-back and made it easier to absorb the blow of their captain’s current absence.

Nonetheless, Liverpool may well be getting Newcastle at a good time, considering the depleted nature of their squad and their ailing form of four defeats in five top-flight matches.

We never like seeing players suffering injury, and we wish Lascelles and his stricken teammates the best with their respective recoveries.

Liverpool’s complete dominance in the first half of their match against Burnley this evening was vividly highlighted in one statistic which emerged during the interval at Turf Moor.

The Reds went into half-time with a 1-0 lead courtesy of an early Darwin Nunez goal, but anyone watching would’ve acknowledged that the lead should’ve been considerably larger, such was the authority they had in the opening 45 minutes.

Remarkably, Jurgen Klopp’s side scored just once despite having eight shots on target prior to the interval, and 14 altogether to the Clarets’ two (Sofascore).

In Sky Sports’ live web commentary, Lewis Jones pointed out (18:15): “The only other side with eight shots on target in the first half of a Premier League game this season was Newcastle against Sheffield United in September. That ended 8-0. This arguably should be 8-0 already.”

Even allowing for how extraordinarily clinical Newcastle were at Bramall Lane, Liverpool ought to have been far more than one goal to the good at half-time against Burnley.

Between Mo Salah striking the crossbar, Cody Gakpo spurning an 11th-minute chance and the Dutchman later having a good goal ruled out for a nonexistent foul by Darwin Nunez on Charlie Taylor, Klopp would’ve been vexed by the slender scoreline at the interval.

The Reds will hope that, at the time of writing, their first-half profligacy won’t come back to haunt them against a team who’ve lost eight of their nine home matches in the Premier League so far this season.

That only one other team has had so many shots on target in a top-flight match prior to half-time shows just how utterly dominant Liverpool have been. The crucial factor, though, is that they didn’t put the result out of sight by the interval.

An American YouTube duo who watched highlights of a classic Liverpool victory for the first time were fascinated by the events which transpired.

Spencer Joyce and his friend Daniel – the men behind a channel named Embrace The Suck 21, which features them watching TV shows and other popular pursuits from this side of the Atlantic – immersed themselves in the Reds’ 4-3 Anfield epic against Newcastle from 1996.

That, of course, was the night when Stan Collymore’s stoppage time winner kept his team’s Premier League title hopes alive and dealt a colossal blow to the Magpies’ own ambitions of glory.

The duo watched open-mouthed at seeing the goal which finally settled that classic encounter and admitted their surprise at witnessing such a high-scoring game, having believed football to consist of many 0-0 stalemates but very much giving this epic thriller ‘two thumbs up’.

We’re glad you liked it, chaps, and we have plenty more unforgettable Liverpool victories to recommend if you wish to truly be converted to following the Reds!

The agent of one player who’s been linked with Liverpool recently took to social media with a cryptic post regarding his client.

The Reds had reportedly sent a proposal to Newcastle towards the end of the summer transfer window regarding Bruno Guimaraes, but it was rejected by the Magpies, who are now understood to be closing in on agreeing a new contract with the 25-year-old, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The midfielder’s representative Alexis Malavolta seemed to further hint that the player is set to stay at St James’ Park, having taken to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share a clip of the Brazilian in action.

The caption displayed a writing hand emoji, with Guimaraes and Newcastle both tagged, as if to suggest that he’s about to pen fresh terms on Tyneside.

The 25-year-old was one of eight Magpies players to find the net in their emphatic victory over Sheffield United on Sunday, with the Daily Express reporting that he shouted ‘I’m staying’ while celebrating his goal at Bramall Lane.

It seems increasingly as if Guimaraes will shrug off the reported interest of Liverpool and other suitors to remain at Newcastle, but while he’s been a fine addition to Eddie Howe’s side, the Reds need not be too concerned.

Our own midfield rebuild over the summer is already paying dividends, with Dominik Szoboszlai enjoying a scintillating start to life at Anfield and Alexis Mac Allister getting his first assist for LFC in style yesterday with a sumptuous pass to pick out Darwin Nunez.

That’s before we even mention Ryan Gravenberch, who’s gradually integrating into the fold after his deadline day move from Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Curtis Jones has begun the season in flying form, keeping the Dutchman and Wataru Endo out of the Premier League starting XI for the time being.

Liverpool could potentially eye up another potential raid on Newcastle for Guimaraes further down the line, but for now Jurgen Klopp must be delighted with how his current midfielders are performing.

The Magpies began the season in buoyant mood after their top-four finish last term, starting the campaign with a 5-1 thrashing of Aston Villa, but their loss to the Reds was sandwiched by defeats at Manchester City and Brighton, leaving them with just three points from their first four games.

They’ve bounced back since the international break with two wins in the Premier League, the latest of which was an 8-0 drubbing of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, a result the 45-year-old felt was a statement response from his side after their slow start to 2023/24.

As per Liverpool Echo, Howe said: “The Liverpool game really hurt us, which I think in part played into the Brighton performance – which was disappointing. But what a response from the players in the last week; three big wins, three massive clean sheets.”

While Liverpool’s 3-0 thrashing of Aston Villa was our best performance of the season so far, the highlight for many Reds would’ve been the dramatic late double from Darwin Nunez to salvage victory at St James’ Park.

That’s not meant as a slight at Newcastle – if anything, it ought to be taken as a compliment that we were so ecstatic at coming from behind with 10 men to win away to a team who had finished ahead of us last term.

It felt like than just three points on the board at the time and would’ve been a sucker punch for the Magpies, especially considering Howe’s admission that the pain of that result appeared to seep into their comprehensive defeat at Brighton the following week.

They certainly won’t be lacking for motivation to get one over on us when they come to Anfield at the end of December, but Liverpool’s home record is imperious, and Klopp’s team won’t be in the mood to grant any early New Year cheer to the Tynesiders, especially if the two sides are neck-and-neck in the table at that stage.

According to reports from Spain, Liverpool remain interested in a player for whom they lodged a nine-figure transfer offer over the summer.

AS have claimed that, in late August, the Reds submitted an eye-watering £100m bid to Newcastle for Bruno Guimaraes, which was promptly rejected due to the importance the Magpies place on the £120,000-per-week midfielder (Capology).

That mightn’t necessarily deter the Merseysiders from going back in for the 25-year-old again, though, as his name is ‘listed in ‘red’ within Liverpool’s roadmap for the short-medium term’.

Guimaraes was one of the cornerstones of Newcastle’s highest Premier League finish in 20 years last term, achieving their third-highest WhoScored performance rating as Eddie Howe’s side ended a two-decade wait to bring Champions League football back to St James’ Park.

He’s been described by Geordie football legend Alan Shearer as an ‘absolutely magnificent’ player who ‘never looks flustered’ and ‘never panics’ when in possession (Match of the Day, via Shields Gazette).

That’s an observation backed up by the Brazilian’s match average of 7.49 progressive passes, which places him among the top 11% of midfielders in Europe’s five main leagues over the past year in that regard (FBref).

Liverpool’s £100m bid came at a time when they were still on the lookout for a defensive midfielder, with their search ultimately ending with the deadline day acquisition of Ryan Gravenberch.

The midfield rebuild now appears complete at Anfield after a four-pronged summer transfer assault, with the defence set to be the priority for Jurgen Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke in the January window as things stand.

While Guimaraes is a fine player who’s taken successfully to Premier League football, we currently don’t see the Reds going all-out to try and get him in the winter, unless the picture drastically changes between now and then and the need for a new midfielder amplifies once more.

Darwin Nunez seemed to have a message for referee John Brooks in the final few minutes of Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Newcastle on Sunday.

A clip posted to Twitter/X by @Braden_LFC (taken from LFCTV’s match coverage) shows the 24-year-old looking aghast and making a card gesture towards the official, before then shrugging his shoulders.

It’s unclear from the nine-second footage exactly what the Uruguayan was saying, and to what incident he was referring, although it’s evident that it occurred in the 85th minute, at which point in the game he was booked (WhoScored).

Perhaps he was miffed by his harsh yellow card for rolling the ball away in response to Newcastle being awarded a free kick, with Nunez going into Brooks’ notebook while Joelinton got away with several fouls without being cautioned once.

Whatever he may have said, it seems that his English is continuing to progress nicely!

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cody Gakpo summed up how every Liverpool player and fan must’ve been feeling in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 win over Newcastle.

The Reds secured three massive points at St James’ Park, coming from behind to win it in stoppage time despite being a player short for two-thirds of the game, in the process scoring a huge psychological blow over a team who’ll likely be a direct positional rival this season.

Just after the final whistle yesterday, the away side’s players assembled near the centre circle to congratulate one another on a job well done.

The glee from Trent and Gakpo was clear to see, with the two wrapping each other in a joyous embrace not once but twice as the Liverpool squad saluted their travelling fans.

It was a reaction which perfectly encapsulated the joy among those who earned the victory, as well as the supporters at St James’ Park and beyond who revelled in a potentially season-defining result.

You can see the clip of Trent and Gakpo below, taken from The Redmen TV‘s footage on YouTube and shared via @lfc___3 on Twitter/X:
