Gary Neville may not have the highest regard among Liverpool fans but in his most recent interview with Trent Alexander-Arnold, it’s clear that there’s a lot of respect present between the pair.

The Scouser asked the former Manchester United man how he felt when Phil Neville left Old Trafford, with his brother sharing information on a meeting the pair had with Alex Ferguson.

At this point, our vice captain interjected with: “You geg into everyone’s meetings don’t you!”

It was a hilarious addition from the right-back as he commented on previous remarks about the Sky Sports pundit being involved in youth player contract meetings in his career.

Liverpool fans have every reason to feel downbeat after an unprecedented run of poor results has left us wondering whether a potential dream season could end in a nightmare.

Speaking about our loss to Crystal Palace, Gary Neville said: “Difficult day for [Liverpool] today, a really disappointing day.

“The crowd felt a bit flat, watching it on the screens that we’ve got here, and a bad day for them.

We’re edging closer to an end to a season we never really saw coming and time is rapidly running out if we want to turn our fortunes around.

It would be a monumental ask to go to Italy and score three or four goals without reply, especially whilst playing the way the team are at the moment.

It’s been a disastrous run of results for Liverpool and in a matter of weeks, we may well have thrown away our chances of a fairytale ending for Jurgen Klopp, with Gary Neville sharing his thoughts.

It seems a little too harsh to say that this team is one that would lose this number of games and keep dropping points but given our recent form, it’s hard to argue against it.

Our manager would be the first to direct credit towards a squad that has got us into a position that we were competing on four fronts but time for a reaction is quickly running out.

The Egyptian King surpassed Alan Shearer’s scoring record against the Old Trafford outfit in the process in what was his 23rd goal of the 2023/24 season across all competitions.

Gary Neville has lauded the talents of Virgil van Dijk amid a phenomenal season from the Dutchman.

The ex-England international had been asked to name one player he’d like to bring to Manchester United.

“I would say [Virgil] van Dijk. I just think that Van Dijk would bring dominance to the team and a presence in the team that we haven’t got. We haven’t got a forward as good as Mo Salah, but we’ve got talented forwards,” the former Manchester United fullback spoke on The Overlap.

“I always think if you’ve got a spine of strength and presence… We always say, don’t we, ‘Oh, there’s no Roy Keanes anymore, there’s no Vincent Kompanys anymore, there’s no John Terrys’ – there actually is one now at Liverpool, when you think about how he’s performed this season, Van Dijk. He’s a massive presence on that pitch.

“He’s not the same character as some of those that I’ve mentioned, but he actually is quite dominant on the pitch. He speaks a lot more than people might think, and he actually is someone you can see that’s got an aura about him.”

The Dutch international has helped steer Liverpool to the top of the table in what could be a dramatic end to Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield.

Give Van Dijk a new contract

One of the first hurdles a new Liverpool manager will have to clear is our No.4’s expiring contract.

The former Southampton centre-half’s current terms – along with that of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah’s – are set to run out in the summer of 2025.

On current form, however, it would seem daft beyond belief to allow Van Dijk to depart the club in just over a year.

Virgil may be in his 30s but he’s clearly still got a lot to offer in the famous red shirt for years to come.

Roy Keane has claimed that Liverpool could conjure up a ‘crazy’ scoreline against Brighton at Anfield this afternoon.

The Reds could end the night top of the Premier League if they win today and the Manchester City v Arsenal clash is a draw, and the ex-Manchester United captain is expecting a backlash from Jurgen Klopp’s side after the agony of their FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford a fortnight ago.

When asked for his prediction on The Overlap, the 52-year-old initially said: “All day Liverpool, the reaction after that. It’s going to be 4-0, it’s going to be crazy.” He later revised his predicted final score to a more sedate 3-1, with fellow pundit Gary Neville forecasting a 3-0 home win.

If Liverpool are to prove the former United duo correct, they’ll need to manage something they haven’t done since November 2019 – stop Brighton from leaving Anfield with a result.

Paul Merson is expecting a far tighter contest than Keane and Neville, but Reds supporters would settle for any victorious scoreline if offered it right now.

When it gets to this stage of the season, and with so little to choose between the three title contenders, all that matter is getting victories on the board, even if they’re earned with grit rather than grace.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville spend a lot of time together for two people who seemingly don’t get on but the pair have clashed again.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, the former Old Trafford stalwart said: “I mean, Carragher’s statement that Liverpool and Manchester City over the last six years is the greatest rivalry [in Premier League history] is offensive.

“From 1998 to 2004, Arsenal won three titles and Manchester United won four… over the last six years Liverpool have won one title, it’s been an absolute demolition.”

It was laughed off as usual between the pair but the Scouser’s reasoning was that the rivalry between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola has produced the best football the league has seen.

Gary Neville has heaped praise on one Liverpool player who was ‘immense’ in the Reds’ 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.

Although the home side didn’t manage a clean sheet at Anfield, Virgil van Dijk still has every reason to feel pleased with his performance, having stifled Erling Haaland to the point where the prolific Norwegian was little more than a spectator for much of the afternoon.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, the 48-year-old lauded the LFC captain for ensuring that the City striker was unusually subdued, especially after scoring seven times in his last three games.

The ex-Manchester United defender said: “Haaland, we see him quiet, we see him quiet quite often, but he normally lights up a game. There was nothing from him today. Van Dijk was immense and [Jarell] Quansah did well alongside him.”

The duel between Van Dijk and Haaland yesterday was encapsulated by the first-half moment where the City striker was bearing down on goal but the Liverpool skipper matched him stride for stride and did enough to put him off when it came to eventually taking the shot.

As per Sofascore, the 32-year-old won five of his eight duels, made four tackles and four interceptions, and delivered six accurate long balls out of seven attempted, yet it was his work in possession which truly highlighted what a Rolls-Royce of a footballer he is.

The £220,000-per-week Dutchman misplaced just two of his 79 passes all day (97% success rate) and lost the ball only three times, the fewest of anyone who featured for the home side, including those who came on as substitutes (Sofascore).

Van Dijk has been buoyed by the Liverpool captaincy this season, as illustrated by him generally recapturing the stratospheric levels he reached in his first two years at Anfield, and he came good for his team in their biggest match of the campaign so far, fully justifying Neville’s praise.

Gary Neville heaped praise on two Liverpool players over separate moments during the 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds came from behind at half-time to claim a share of the spoils at Anfield, but a combination of missed chances and an awful VAR decision led to a sense of frustration at full-time.

Nonetheless, the ex-Manchester United defender was impressed by a couple of players in red during the second half.

Following an Andy Robertson cross in the 71st minute which fizzed towards Darwin Nunez in the penalty area, Neville said on Sky Sports (10 March, 17:15): “What a ball from Robertson. Sensational cross…It’s a wonderful ball from Andy Robertson, in between centre-backs and goalkeeper, perfect for Nunez.”

A few minutes later, Luis Diaz had Liverpool fans off their seats with a scintillating solo run from one penalty box to another, which led to the co-commentator declaring (17:27, via RTK and Sky Sports live web commentary): “He should’ve scored three but he’s been absolutely amazing in the second-half, Luis Diaz. You don’t see many do that to Rodri and Kyle Walker one on one, let alone two on one…he’s been absolutely immense in this second half.”

Diaz endured a frustrating afternoon as he spurned two glorious chances to score in the second half, but his overall performance was very energetic and lively.

As per Sofascore, the Colombian won six duels, made three key passes, completed four dribbles and won six duels and two tackles.

Meanwhile, in his 30 minutes on the pitch after coming on as a substitute, Robertson misplaced only two passes, registered three key passes and delivered three accurate crosses (Sofascore).

Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with the performances of those two, and indeed with Liverpool as a whole, with the Reds outplaying Man City for almost all the second half.

Despite the sense of what could’ve been after today’s match, there was more than enough evidence from the overall display to offer plenty of encouragement for the final 10 Premier League games of our season.

Gary Neville has thrown his support behind Manchester City ahead of the Sky Blues’ impending clash with Liverpool.

The former England international has predicted that Pep Guardiola’s men will secure a 2-1 win over their title rivals at Anfield.

“I do think Manchester City are going to win today,” the former Red Devils defender told Liverpool’s official X account.

“That’s not borne out of any anti-Liverpool… Gary Neville is a Red and all that sort of stuff… I just feel today that this could be one step too far for Liverpool.

“I think they’d done unbelievably this season to stay in the league title race – I never thought they’d be there at any point in the season.”

The Merseysiders find themselves second in the league table. Only a mere point separates them from leaders Arsenal following a 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday.

When was the last time Manchester City won at Anfield?

The Sky Blues have only secured one other win at Anfield since beating us 2-1 in May 2003.

That came without fans present during the COVID-affected season of 2020/21. A campaign that’s better left forgotten than remembered in all honesty.

Whilst we shouldn’t discount the possibility of Manchester City’s quality hurting us today, it would be remiss to not take into consideration our 12th man at L4.

In potentially the last meeting between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, it promises to be a tie to truly savour.

Still, let’s hope that Jamie Carragher’s prediction of a 2-1 win over City comes true!

In previewing Liverpool’s clash against Manchester City on Sunday, Gary Neville uttered words that no Reds fan would ever have expected him to say.

The Sky Sports pundit and dyed-in-the-wool Man United fan has never concealed his dislike for the Merseyside club, but he’s prepared to put his long-standing loyalties aside for one reason this weekend, even if he thinks his wish won’t be granted.

The 48-year-old was speaking to LFC supporter Abigail Rudkin on the Fan Debate for The Overlap when he gave his prediction for Sunday.

Neville said: “I think City are going to beat you. I want Liverpool to win [because] I want the league to be opened up, but I think City are going to win on Sunday, I think [Pep Guardiola] will come and he’s going to put a right job in.”

While City will likely pose a sterner test than anything we’ve faced in recent weeks, the weight of history in in our favour when it comes to this fixture.

Guardiola’s only win at Anfield in eight attempts came three years ago, when Liverpool were in the midst of an atrocious form at a time that fans couldn’t attend matches due to the global pandemic.

In front of 61,000 screaming supporters, almost all of whom will be buoyed by the Reds sitting top of the Premier League and flying in other competitions, Sunday also promises to be City’s biggest challenge of the season so far.

We never thought we’d say these words, but let’s give Neville what he’s hoping for!

Gary Neville has chimed in with his take on the fallout from Liverpool’s winning goal against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday, which left the home side furious.

Darwin Nunez’s 99th-minute winner prompted some of Nuno Espirito Santo’s players to surround Paul Tierney straight after the final whistle, with their chairman Evangelos Marinakis also coming onto the pitch to get involved.

Their ire stemmed from referee to return the ball to the hosts after stopping the play when Ibrahima Konate went down with a head injury, with the visitors striking for the decisive goal 110 seconds later.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, the ex-Manchester United defender rejected Mike Dean’s suggestion that the on-field official committed a ‘monumental error’, and also hit out at Mark Clattenburg – who now holds a refereeing analysis role with Forest – for proclaiming that Tierney’s error was ‘difficult to explain’.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “There is no doubt the Nottingham Forest player is in possession but the goal came a minute and 50 [seconds] after that. Two minutes in football is an absolute age.

“The idea that it was a ‘monumental error’… I get the fact it was a mistake, a frustration, but I get the feeling now that we’re making too much out of what I feel is a run-of-the-mill error. You see them quite regularly in a season.”

Neville added: “The owner on the pitch and the Mark Clattenburg nonsense, I can’t buy into. I feel we are pushing the boundaries, and inciting anger and hate towards referees [with] some of the action clubs are taking.

“To me, it’s an error. It’s just a mistake. We don’t know Liverpool wouldn’t have scored anyway. At the moment, we need to show a bit of restraint. I don’t feel it’s as bad as we’re making out.”

First of all, we acknowledge that Tierney got it wrong by not returning the ball to Forest for the restart after Konate’s head injury. However, for anyone to suggest that Liverpool got lucky over the official’s error would be firing at the wrong target.

Even if the home side were correctly given the opportunity to restart play just outside our penalty area, there’s no guarantee that they would’ve scored from it.

Also, as Neville (and others) have rightly pointed out, there was more than enough time between the match resuming and Nunez scoring for Forest to have dealt with any danger that we could pose, and they paid the price for their failure to clear from a corner rather than a mistake by the referee.

While some Liverpool fans may feel a sense of payback given Tierney’s history with controversial decisions going against us, two wrongs don’t make a right when it comes to officials making basic errors.

The 43-year-old isn’t at fault for Forest losing on Saturday, and he certainly didn’t hand us the win on a silver platter like some social media users have complained, but you’d hope that he and his colleagues will learn from the incident and not repeat it during the run-in to a hugely competitive season at both ends of the Premier League table.
