Two Liverpool legends could be set to leave their clubs this summer, but sadly, it doesn’t look like either will be heading back to Anfield.
Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano, once a terrific anchorman for Liverpool, is expected to move to Juventus, despite the fact Los Cules want to keep him. The Argentine has agreed a three year deal with the Serie A champions, which will see his wages significantly increase, according to Catalan paper Sport.
The Spanish giants want to keep him, but now face the difficulty of keeping a player whose heart is set on pastures new.
Mascherano would be absolutely perfectly for Liverpool, and it’s a shame he’s unlikely to play for us again. We desperately need a holding midfielder with his bite and discipline, but it seems like The Old Lady is his next destination.
While Mascherano looks set for an exit, Barcelona might be re-signing Pepe Reina. Sport claim in a separate report that our former goalkeeper’s agent has visited Barcelona in an attempt to organise a summer deal.
This seems like an odd one, as Reina is Napoli’s first-choice, but would switch to Barcelona as a backup – something he had to do for Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich.
We’ve just signed Loris Karius to compete with Simon Mignolet for the starting spot between our sticks, but would probably prefer Reina over the Belgian if we had the choice!
Mascherano and Reina were a cornerstone of maybe our best ever Premier League side, under Rafa Benitez, and were undoubtedly let go too soon.
