It was an afternoon to forget for Liverpool on Sunday as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield.

The result further dented our Premier League title hopes with us now sitting in third place – behind Arsenal on goal difference and two points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.

Despite missing a number of clear cut chances in the second half Jurgen Klopp’s side never really got going and Eberechi Eze’s early strike earned the visitors all three points on Merseyside.

Liverpool were miles off their opponents during the early stages of the game but it’s Ibou Konate who’s been singled out by Tim Sherwood for the role he played moments before Palace’s goal.

“It’s interesting to look at Konate, there, he just doesn’t move, he gets stuck there, he’s like Madame Tussauds, I just couldn’t believe it, it’s a bad position he’s picked up,” Sherwood said on Premier League Productions (via The Boot Room).

As on Thursday during our 3-0 defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League, not many Liverpool players were at their best against Palace.

There was a lack of intensity to our play, our decision making was poor and we simply weren’t clinical in front of goal.

No offence intended to Oliver Glasner’s side, but we can’t afford to be dropping points to a bottom half side if we’re wanting to win the title.

Konate wasn’t the only player to not cover himself in glory during the early stages as we were far too passive and allowed Palace too much time on the ball all over the park.

We need to improve again rapidly if we’re to have any chance of winning our second title under Klopp.

Glen Johnson has admitted he’s ‘concerned’ for whichever manager succeeds Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool boss in the summer but has suggested one current Premier League tactician in particular could be a decent replacement for the German.

Klopp announced back in January that the current campaign will be his last one on Merseyside after conceding that he’s ran out of the energy required to occupy the hot seat at Anfield.

Having won every major trophy possible during his time at L4 it means that whoever comes in to replace the 56-year-old will have a serious job on their hands.

Current Bayer Leverkusen boss and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is expected to stay in his current role beyond the summer despite being strongly linked with a return to Anfield while Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim is considered the next favourite to succeed Klopp.

“I don’t know a great deal about him but result wise, he’s clearly doing a brilliant job at Sporting Lisbon,” Johnson told Betfred (via Liverpool World). “However, I’m concerned for anyone that has to fill Jürgen Klopp’s shoes. I’m sure that Liverpool will have successful managers again in the future, but to immediately follow Jürgen is a tough job. Anyone who goes there now has a very uphill job to do. It doesn’t matter who you are, it’s going to be a tough job.

“Even though I’ve said that Jürgen Klopp will be a tough act to follow, any manager that comes in will be inheriting a great squad and it will be an improvement in terms of player quality than any candidate would have had at their disposal previously.

READ MORE: Editor’s Column: It’s not just the bad finishing, you know…

“I know people will think that I’m absolutely mad, but Mauricio Pochettino is a big name that can go into that job and grab everyone’s attention. That would excite people despite what’s happened at Chelsea this season because I don’t believe what’s gone on there is Mauricio’s fault. You don’t become a bad manager overnight and if he inherited that Liverpool squad, then I believe he could do good things at Anfield.”

It will be difficult to replace a man who ended Liverpool’s 30-year long wait for a league title and also delivered our sixth European Cup amongst many other trophies but it’s a job that should excite the top managers in Europe rather than scare them.

Reds supporters will understand that any new manager will require time to adjust to life at the club and get to know his new players while implementing their own style of play.

Amorim currently has Sporting Lisbon four points clear at the top of the table – four points clear of city rivals Benfica and with a game in hand – but has reaffirmed his commitment to the side from the Portuguese capital recently.

We have a minimum of seven games to play under Klopp before he calls it a day so let’s hope for some miracles to add a further two trophies to his collection!

Chris Sutton has explained there’s one Liverpool player in particular who he can’t take his eyes off when watching him play.

Despite describing Darwin Nunez as ‘an all action guy’ and someone who ‘puts himself about’ – the former Premier League striker believes the Uruguayan’s finishing ‘isn’t good enough’, however.

The former Benfica forward was one of a number of Liverpool players to miss absolute sitters against Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday as the Reds fell to a 1-0 defeat which further dented their title hopes.

Jurgen Klopp’s side now find themselves third in the league table, behind Arsenal on goal difference and two points adrift of current champions Manchester City, with six games to play.

“The player I’d single out is Darwin Nunez,” Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live (via Rousing The Kop). “You can’t take your eyes off him when he plays he is an all action guy. He puts himself about, he’s willing, players bounce off him. He’s so, so watchable but his finishing isn’t good enough.

“In moments like that, Liverpool have a ridiculous amount of points from losing positions. Their powers of recovery have been monumental, astonishing at times.

“But he had a golden opportunity against Palace, he has to score it. He doesn’t take it and that is the difference.”

Liverpool have earned a whopping 27 points from losing positions so far this term – the best in the top flight.

We can’t continue to fall behind in games however, and a slow start against Palace on Sunday cost us massively as we fell further behind in the Premier League title race.

Nunez’s numbers so far this term, 18 goals and 13 assists in 47 games (across all competitions), are impressive but the number of huge chances that he misses is a huge concern.

Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota also missed sitters at the weekend but it’s our No.9 who is doing so week in and week out and it’s starting to cost us.

His work rate and effort is second to none but if he and the rest of his teammates don’t find their shooting boots again in the coming weeks it could be a very disappointing end to the campaign.

Paul Merson has questioned why Harvey Elliott wasn’t handed more game time during Liverpool’s shock 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Reds had the opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League table had they beaten the Selhurst Park-based outfit at the weekend but instead ended the weekend third in the table with Manchester City currently occupying top spot ahead of Arsenal.

Despite Jurgen Klopp promising a reaction from his side’s 3-0 Europa League defeat to Atalanta on Thursday night, the Merseysiders threw in a lacklustre first half performance and then wasted a handful of huge opportunities to find the back of the net after the break.

The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott were all introduced from the bench to help try and rescue the Reds but Merson believes the latter should’ve been given more of a chance to influence the game.

“Klopp’s a great manager,” the former Arsenal man told Sky Sports (via Rousing The Kop). “Why are you bringing Harvey Elliott on with ten minutes to go?  Eight minutes to go? Give him 25-30. That’s one thing he is, a very good substitute. He affects football matches. But managers feel the pressure as well.”

Our No. 19 has struggled to break into the starting XI so far this term but has impressed whenever called upon from the bench.

The England youth international has three goals and seven assists to his name this season (across all competitions) and has spoken recently about his desire to start more games for his boyhood club.

The 21-year-old can be deployed in an advanced midfield role or as part of the front three and has the ability to calve open defences with his superb passing ability and impressive vision.

He does bring a lot of energy to the side when brought off the bench but he’ll be eager to make his mark from the start when handed the chance to do so between now and the end of the season.

Former Liverpool player Dominic Matteo has claimed the only man who should replace Jurgen Klopp as Reds manager in the summer is current Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.

The 58-year-old was only named manager of the North London-based outfit in the summer after a successful spell in charge of Celtic but the Greek-born tactician has earned plaudits for bringing an attacking and exciting style of play to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Xabi Alonso emerged as the favourite to replace Klopp when the German announced in January that he’d be calling it a day on Merseyside at the end of the current campaign but the former Reds midfielder is instead set to remain at his current club Bayer Leverkusen for the foreseeable future.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is now the new favourite to occupy the Anfield hot seat next season with his side currently top of the Portuguese top flight.

“In terms of who replaces Jurgen Klopp, it has to be Ange Postecoglou at Spurs for me,” Matteo told William Hill (via Liverpool World). “He plays the right style of football which would be suited at Liverpool and I don’t think the nature of the job would get to him. I’ve been impressed with his first season at Spurs – the way he deals with the media and the way his team plays on the front foot is admirable.

“He seems to be an excellent man-manager which is needed at this high level of the game – particularly at a club like Liverpool – plus he can deal with the pressure and has won silverware. It seems Xabi Alonso has chosen to not pursue the job at this stage of his career and Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi are other managers on the list who could be available, but Postecoglou should be their first choice.”

Postecoglou is a decent manager who’s achieved success right throughout his career but we’re finding it hard to agree with Matteo’s comments.

The ex-Celtic boss started the season well with Spurs but they’ve somewhat dropped off since and currently find themselves in fourth place – 11 points off the top.

The prospect of Alonso replacing Klopp was one that excited many Liverpool supporters but you can’t blame him for wanting to remain in Germany and continue the exciting project he’s got going on with Leverkusen.

Amorim’s Sporting, meanwhile, are currently four points clear at the top of the table and have a game in hand over fierce city rivals Benfica in second.

At just 39 years of age the Lisbon-born tactician may not be as experienced as many of the other managerial candidates but he’s proving this season that he knows what he’s doing.

Anyone will find it hard to come in and continue the brilliant work the former Borussia Dortmund boss has done down the years but we’ll just have to wait and see who’s given the responsibility!

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has explained he still reckons Jurgen Klopp’s side will win the Premier League title this season despite dropping to second after Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

The Reds needed a late Mo Salah penalty to earn a point at Old Trafford while Arsenal defeated Brighton away from home to return to the summit on goal difference.

Manchester City are in third place, just a single point behind Arsenal and Liverpool, and we appear all set for one of the most exciting title races ever.

Hamann said on talkSPORT (via The Boot Room): “I still fancy them [Liverpool] because there was nothing wrong with their play [against Manchester United].

“Obviously, they should have won the game. Then again, I’m not sure about the penalty that was given for Liverpool.

“If you look at the run-in, City probably fancy their chances as well but then again you can’t rule Arsenal out.

“But I just think that the Klopp factor that everybody wants to send him off with a perfect farewell, hopefully with three trophies.

“It may lead towards the Liverpool Premier League win. I still go with Liverpool.”

Liverpool ended their 30-year long wait for a league title in 2020 but City have won the last three titles and will fancy their chances of retaining their crown.

Arsenal look good, however, and will have learned a lot from last season’s near miss when they led the way for the majority of the campaign before drifting away.

Injuries have ravaged Klopp’s squad so far this season but with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota set to return in the near future there’s no reason why we can’t win another league title to give our German tactician the perfect send off.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss will call it a day on Merseyside at the end of the current campaign but has his sights firmly set on the league title and Europa League glory before then.

Peterborough chairman and Liverpool supporter Darragh MacAnthony has claimed Jurgen Klopp made a mistake with his team selection for the Reds’ 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

The Merseysiders took the lead through Luis Diaz in the first half but required a late Mo Salah penalty to earn a point after second half strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo turned the game on its head.

Klopp’s options were somewhat limited heading into the clash with the likes of Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota currently nursing injuries but an interesting decision was made in defence by the former Borussia Dortmund boss.

Academy graduate Jarell Quansah was selected ahead of Ibou Konate at Old Trafford but the 21-year-old made an error by gifting the ball to Fernandes before he dragged the hosts level.

“My biggest question mark is if Konate is fit for the bench why is he not fit for the strongest 11?” MacAnthony queried on The Hard Truth podcast (via Rousing The Kop). “I’m Jurgen Klopp’s biggest defender, I said without him we wouldn’t be top four, never mind competing for a title, but you have got to play your best players.

READ MORE: Neil Jones shares huge news coming out of Liverpool this afternoon

“I am watching Konate go abroad and play for France and then he comes back and he’s on the bench. We all knew he was slightly made of glass when they signed him, it was the one question mark over him, and unfortunately he never plays 50 games a season. He was a little like muscle injuries, but if he was on the bench at Old Trafford, and Quansah has had a great season, but you have to play your best players.”

Quansah has had a brilliant campaign in a red shirt after making his debut against Newcastle back in August. He’s barely put a foot wrong in defence and has performed like a seasoned professional despite his tender age.

The England youth international doesn’t need telling that his error was a shocking one against the Red Devils but our No.78 will learn a lot from that mistake.

It was certainly a surprise to see him selected ahead of Konate but the Frenchman is injury prone and Klopp may have felt that our game against United was one game too much for the former RB Leipzig man.

Keeping the 24-year-old fit for the remainder of the campaign could prove decisive as we aim to go all the way in the Europa League and pip both Manchester City and Arsenal to the Premier League title.

At the age of 25 Trent Alexander-Arnold has already won every major trophy possible for his boyhood club Liverpool.

The Academy graduate has had plenty of memorable moments in a red shirt but the England international has now revealed ‘the best feeling’ he’s ever experienced on a football pitch.

“It’s hard,” the Scouser began while speaking at his Football for Change launch event (via Liverpool ECHO). “With the Champions League final, you’re going into it knowing the difference between winning and losing is massive. It gets you going like nothing else. The league title is a lot harder to win because it’s over the entire season. You have to be so consistent. I think it was harder for us to win the league but I’d say it felt better in terms of a single moment when we won the European Cup. When Divock (Origi) scored in Madrid, that’s the best feeling I’ve ever had on a football pitch.”

Alexander-Arnold was just 20 years of age when we took on Spurs in the Spanish capital but despite his tender age he was already recognised as one of the best full-backs in the world.

Our No. 66 has been ruled out since February with a knee injury and although the Scouser has been a huge miss in recent months, Conor Bradley has deputised superbly at right back.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the Englishman is deployed in midfield when he returns to fitness but we’ll just have to wait and see.

His exceptional passing range and creativity is what sets Trent aside from most other players so it certainly makes sense to have him pulling the strings in the middle of the park.

Alexander-Arnold is hopeful of returning to action in the coming weeks and he could play a huge role in our attempts of tasting success in both the Europa League and Premier League.

Chris Sutton has previewed Thursday’s clash between Liverpool and Sheffield United at Anfield and has explained what the Premier League title race could come down to.

With just nine games remaining Jurgen Klopp’s side lead the way, two points clear of Arsenal in second and three clear of Manchester City in third.

Sheffield United, who are eight points from safety at the bottom of the table, have won just three league games all season but have nothing to lose at L4 on Thursday.

Sutton believes it will be a comfortable victory for the Merseysiders against the Blades on Thursday and has suggested the game provides Liverpool with a good opportunity to boost their goal difference – a factor which could prove decisive at the end of the season.

“This is top versus bottom and Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah is going to be captaining my Fantasy team – that should tell you all you need to know about what I am expecting to happen here,” Sutton told BBC Sport.

“Against Brighton on Sunday, Liverpool did what they have done all season, which is finding a way to win even when they fall behind.

“This should be far more straightforward because Sheffield United do not have the quality to cause them the same problems the Seagulls did.

“Liverpool cannot just expect to turn up and win easily though. The finish line is in sight but they need to put their foot down to get there first, and that is what I think will happen here.

“Looking at the table, goal difference could play a big part in the title race. Arsenal have the advantage there at the moment, but a big scoreline here could change that.”

Arsenal currently have the best goal difference in the league on 46 with us next best on 40.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, have conceded 77 goals in 29 games and require a miracle to retain their top flight status this year,

We’re of course huge favourites against Chris Wilder’s side but we need to ensure we’re at our best to get the job done and retain our spot at the top of the table.

Three points, rather than winning by a huge margin, is the main thing before we travel to Old Trafford for another huge game on Sunday.

Brighton ace Evan Ferguson has claimed Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk ‘has everything’ following Sunday’s clash between the two sides at Anfield.

The Seagulls took the lead inside two minutes thanks to a ferocious effort from Danny Welbeck but goals from Luis Diaz and Mo Salah ensured the Reds finished the weekend top of the Premier League table.

Ferguson, who was a late substitute for Roberto De Zerbi’s side at L4, has admitted his admiration for van Dijk who was named Liverpool captain in the summer following the departure of Jordan Henderson.

“Toughest defender you have faced so far?” Ferguson was asked by ESPN on TikTok (via The Boot Room).

“Van Dijk. He just, he has everything, he’s big, he’s quick, he’s strong, he’s smart. He’s got everything he does,” the Irishman replied.

Our No.4 has looked back to his world class best this season with his dominance both on the ground and in the air.

There were fears just last season that the Netherlands international was past his best but he’s silenced many of those critics this term and has already added the League Cup to his selection this season.

The Europa League and Premier League remain within Liverpool’s sights during the current campaign as the Reds aim to give Jurgen Klopp the perfect send off.

Van Dijk is in with a shout for our German’s greatest signing during his time on Merseyside and let’s hope he can continue his fine form as we now enter the business end of the season.

When Liverpool look to add to their squad during the summer transfer market Jurgen Klopp will no longer be at the helm.

The German tactician won’t be there but new sporting director Richard Hughes will with him set to begin his role on June 1.

The Scotsman, who currently works at AFC Bournemouth and has done since 2016, has an eye for spotting future stars and there’s hope he can continue to do so on Merseyside.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has been discussing whether he expects Hughes to target any Cherries players when he takes up his new role at Liverpool at the end of the current campaign.

“I don’t know what they will do,” he told the Bournemouth Daily Echo (via Liverpool Echo). “I think as long as they meet the requirements the club sets and the offer is good for everyone, this is football.

“I don’t know what is going to happen in the market. It is too early to talk about this. The summer is still far away. We have a lot of things to play for.

“But whenever the market is open. There are always chances for these things to happen, yes.”

Bournemouth are 13th in the Premier League at the moment and have a youthful squad full of energy and hunger.

The Reds have sold a lot of players to the south coast outfit down the years with the likes of Jordon Abe, Brad Smith, Harry Wilson and Dominik Solanke swapping Anfield for the Vitality Stadium.

The latter has registered 17 goals and four assists so far this term (across all competitions) and is the club’s top goalscorer.

Hughes has done a quality job in his current role and he’ll be expected to pull off more impressive business when he joins Liverpool.

He’ll have more money to work with but it remains to be seen whether any Bournemouth players will be on his radar.

Harvey Elliott earned more minutes for England’s U21s this evening as they thrashed Luxembourg 7-0 at Bolton Wanderer’s ground.

Our No. 19 played the full 90 minutes as part of a midfield three and while picking up two assists on the night he also decided to show off some of his party tricks during the rout.

The Liverpool man pulled off an outrageous bit of skill to control the ball and then volley the ball ‘rabona’ style out to the right winger.

It just goes to show the confidence that the former Fulham youngster is playing with at the moment.

Let’s hope he can have a strong end to the campaign with Jurgen Klopp’s side in the coming weeks.

Sergio Aguero has explained he’s been impressed by what Jurgen Klopp has achieved during his time at Liverpool and has admitted he would’ve liked to have played under the German tactician.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss is calling an end to his Reds career in the summer after a wonderful nine year spell on Merseyside which has saw him win every major trophy possible.

He’s already added a second Carabao Cup to his collection this season with Liverpool also in contention for the Premier League and Europa League during the final months of the campaign.

Aguero won five league titles during his time with Manchester City but that hasn’t stopped him from expressing his admiration for Klopp.

“Terrific manager, Klopp has certainly elevated Liverpool, allowing them to become a protagonist of the Premier League in recent years,” Aguero told Stake.com (via Liverpool Echo). “He’s made them more aggressive, more intense in their playing style.

“New players have arrived and Jurgen has managed to adapt them to this offensive mentality. He’ll be sorely missed in the Premier League, but he’s made his choice, and it’s up to us to respect it.

Any great manager will teach you many valuable things. It would have been a great experience for sure [to play under Klopp].”

The Argentine played under Pep Guardiola for the majority of his time at the Etihad but Aguero’s comments prove just how much respect top class players have for Klopp and what he’s done.

He’s achieved so much success on a much tighter budget compared to the current City boss and it’s going to be hard for anyone to come in and continue the excellent work the German has done at Anfield.

He’s completed some brilliant transfer business down the years at Liverpool and also brought in three quality additions in the summer which means whoever does become our next manager they’ll be inheriting a hungry squad full of quality.

Who knows how much more success we could’ve tasted had Aguero plied his trade in the Premier League in a Liverpool shirt rather than a City one but as the 35-year-old says – Klopp will be seriously missed.

Conor Bradley is currently one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet at Liverpool and it appears the Northern Irishman is also impressing for his nation.

The 20-year-old was named in the starting XI for the Green and White Army’s clash with Scotland at Hampden Park this evening and our full-back opened the scoring with a superb strike just after the half hour mark.

Our No. 84 found himself in the Scotland penalty area pressing Everton’s Nathan Patterson who had possession of the ball.

Bradley’s pressure paid off as he forced Patterson into a poor clearance and regained possession of the ball for his side.

He then drove further into the area to give himself a better angle and unleashed an unstoppable effort past Angus Gunn and into the top corner.

Dominik Szoboszlai will be looking to pick up another two trophies during the final few months of his debut Liverpool campaign and the Hungarian has been in fine form for his nation this evening.

Hungary are currently 1-0 up against Kosovo in an international friendly (at the time of writing) thanks to a superb finish from our No. 8.

The former RB Leipzig man, who captains his nation, arrived into the box and latched onto the end of a nicely weighted pass from his teammate to slam his side in front.

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool in the summer in a deal worth £60m and instantly hit the ground running with a number of stellar performances in the middle of the park.

Injuries stalled his brilliant start on Merseyside but he’s registered seven goals and five assists so far this term (across all competitions).

Let’s hope he and the rest of Jurgen Klopp’s squad can return back in full health ahead of our Premier League clash with Brighton on Sunday.
